Are you getting one that is just a hook or a hook with the ball on the end? I personally think the one with the ball on the end looks safer and more erotic,too.

Then it is not really the radius of the ball but the angle of the hook?
My advise whould be to go to a craft store and get a long pipecleaner. Bend it to a shape you think would work and try it out. Through trial and error keep trying different angles until you find a good fit.
Then compare it to the pre-made ones available. You should be able to get a reasonable idea of the size by looking at a good picture.
Having someone you know make it for you sounds like so much fun.

I personally would go for a 1.5 in diameter ball with a 0.75 inch diameter of the metal itself. The loop would be more curvy than straight. It would be a great feel to have it as snug as comfortably possible. The ones I have seen commercially are too straight.

There's foam covered wire that might be more comfortable to use than a pipe cleaner for this purpose. It's thicker, smoother and softer, but will still hold its shape when you bend it. I've seen it in arts supplies and crafts stores here in the United States.
