Melisandra pulled the cloak tighter about her body as she walked the horse out of the castle gates silently. She had only a few minutes of opportunity before the guards were done with their rotation. Her determination was written all over her face though; the princess had no intention of spending one more day in th home of her birth and certainly no intention of marrying the Prince of the Noden Kingdom. Noden and Brask had in times past been at war for many generations and it was only the small fact that the smaller kingdom, Noden, was filled was magic users; that prevented from the larger kingdom from overtaking them. Before her father had taken then throne, Melisandra's grandfather and the previous king of Noden had called a truce. It was shaky at best and a truce in name only at worst. Truth was there was very little trade if any between the two lands and even fewer people going back and forth. When her father had announced last week that she would be married to the crowned Prince, Melisandra had practically choked on her wine. Married? The very idea did not sit well with her for two reason. One she had heard far too many stories about the people of Noden to even feel settled with the idea of being married to their prince; and two Melisandra, while of noble birth, was not the type to be complacent and accept an arranged marriage. The fact was she was very headstrong and outspoken for a highborn woman and as such, the idea of her husband being chosen for her sight unseen was the sort of announcement to spur her into her current action.

She had packed enough food and wine for several days and had enough gold and silver on her for lodging and other needs. Where she would go, that was still undetermined, but the fact remained she was going. She was leaving all that she knew behind, but Melisandra was no babe in the woods. Her mother had died when she was very young and her father had doted on the young princess allowing her all sorts of freedom that included weapons practice with the young squires and knights. It had lasted until Melisandra reached the age of 15, but that didn't mean she didn't sneak away to practice on her own. Her sword was packed away as well, in case she needed it. The two lands while peaceful still had their share of bandits, highwaymen and for-hire mercenaries. While she was rusty at actual sparring and combat, Melisandra was still capable of wielding a sword effectively. If the prince wanted to get married he could find someone else. As far as she was concerned there would be no marriage. Once she was outside of the Castle perimeter Melisandra mounted the roan stallion and headed down the road to take the path through the forest. Take the village road, while safer possibly was too risky. The princess was both well known and well loved. She would have been easily spotted and word would spread like wildfire back to her father and Melisandra would be back home, under guard as well as lock and key. Loosing her freedom was unacceptable.

Drawing the thick black cloak tighter about her, Melisandra continued on her journey passing out of the protection of the castle's shadow and into the woods. While she wasn't expecting any trouble it would be very naive of her to assume her journey would be easy and free of any other people. Considering how long it had been since last she had been outside of the castle walls in her pants and vest, it was entirely possible for her to go unrecognized. Her circlet and all of her jewelry, save for the small silver pendant around her neck had been left in her room. he had also left behind her finished wedding dress and a short note for her father explaining why she was doing what she was and that she did love him. Of course the only flaw in Melisandra's plan was that she was unaware that her future husband was already on his way to Brask to meet with her father.

The current ruling house of Noden had been ruling the country for nearly 7 centuries. The Selkor had been gifted with many powerful, wise and talented users of magic, and they held the mantle of leadership because of it. So much so, they killed any offspring that did not have the Spark, and then all children were tested continually, occasionally with lethal tests to ensure that only those capable lived.

And it was done with good reason. Regardless of what the rest of the world thought, they made sure that anyone with the Spark would not be a danger in any way apart from how they intended. So, when the Crown Prince of the House of Selkor was born 22 years earlier, he was tested to see if he had the Spark. The Mage that performed the ritual was blinded by the result. The Crown Prince had no Spark, he had a Flame.

So, the child who would be named Lentharian Selkor was immediately named Lentharian Selkortaran. The suffix to his name, taran, came from the old tongue meaning "Blessed". He was trained in how to best tap his arcane heritage as soon as he could start to talk. By his 15th year, he could speak, and think, in all the tongues needed rule his Kingdom, and converse with the neighouring Kingdoms, but also the old tongue, and several Arcane Tongues as well. He was given training in self control, patience and willpower. He was shown how to tap his Flame, and he discovered his strength.

He could draw on the power of the Earth herself. Not merely manipulate the element of Earth. He could call on the Living Earth to aid him, protect him, lend him her power. This was above the normal talents of Mages of Noden. He could all on the spirits of the Elements to come to his aid, as well as call on various evocations. He also had an affinity with Emeralds that made even the wisest in Noden shiver at the potential.

Still, as the Crown Prince, he was trained in all subjects relating to ruling a Kingdom. And he was trained to use a sword, and to throw daggers and related items.

When he wasn't sleeping, he was engaged in some form of study or training. He rarely had a moment to himself. So when the offer for him to travel and finally meet his wife to be, he seized the chance to travel alone. He also won a concession out of his Father, and his Mentor, to permit him to travel to Frelu to get some materials he needed for some rituals he was going to perform. But all of that was dependent on him not being accompanied by members of the Royal Guard.

So, dressed in normal clothes of a merchant class, riding on a horse of questionable quality, he was riding to meet his future. His one and only concern about his wife to be was what she really thought of him.

Melissandra was silently cursing to herself as she drew her sword and took count of the men slowly closing in on her. What had started out as a fairly pleasant journey was going downhill and fast. How had things gone so wrong? Simple actually, Melissandra hadn't realized she had been seen entering the forest by a small band of thieves, hiding out waiting to waylay those passing through. She had also failed to notice when they had started to follow her for the next two hours of her journey. They didn't make themselves known to her until the princess had stopped to water and rest her horse as well as to quench her own growing thirst. So now here she stood with 4 men who looked as if they were fairly sure they could take her and whatever she had on her of worth.

“Listen girl just give us your valuables and we'll let you go. We won't hurt a pretty hair on that head of yours unless you make us.”

“Well you are going to have to hurt me then, because I am not handing anything over. I am also not stupid enough to really believe you just want my money and my horse and nothing else. I maybe female but I am not stupid.” Melissandra pulled her hood back fully but at the same time loosened the knot at her throat. She could use it against one of them at least, if they didn't come at her all at once. What light that was breeching the forest canopy made her sword and their knives shine brightly. “Come on I don't have all day. Unless of course you four are too cowardly to actually fight and rely on intimidation alone. Oh wait your thieves, forget I said anything.” If she could get one or more riled up, they would no longer have the advantage.

Her words did manage to get a rather dry chuckle from the one who has spoken before, the obvious leader, “You've got mouth on you girl. We'll have to put that to good use as well.” When he smiled, she gagged softly.

“Over my dead body now let's get this over with. I'm getting bored playing with you boys. I would think there was at leas one real man among you.” That was just the trigger she needed because the next thing she knew the man to her left was charging at her.

“I'll show you a real man you mouthy little whore!” And the fight was started as quick as that. When he charged Melissandra grabbed her cloak and tore it off tangling the man and his knife in it as she sidestepped him. Her sword met his backside as she sent him tumbling past her horse and into the water. There was no time to laugh however though as the the two at her right came at her, one having pulled his own sword. The sound of grunts and steel on steel filled the air. While they weren't military trained they were skilled enough that the fight wouldn't be over too quickly. Of course she also couldn't focus on them solely, now sooner or later the one in the water would untangle himself and there was still their leader to tangle with. As she swung her sword down to block the coming blow, Melissandra struck out with the elbow of her right arm, catching her second opponent in the nose. The sharp cry of pain was all that she needed to know that it was indeed broken. Turning back to the other, they continued to trade blows with her also dodging the thrusts from his smaller knife at the same time.

Dammit I should have just taken my chances in the village. So much for a trouble free plan.

Lentharian was enjoying the solitude of his ride, and the knowledge that he was doing what he wanted without having someone taking care of the details. He was not being drilled with continual details about the protocols of addressing one of the border Barons of Frelu. Why someone ever thought he would be visiting such a low ranked noble of another kingdom was beyond him, but he was expected to know.

But his joyful alone time was broken by the sounds of fighting coming from near by. He was curious more than feeling the need to be chivalrous to whom ever may be involved, so he approached with a degree of caution one would normally use when a fight is under way.

He dismounted and secured his horse to a tree. He advanced slowly and quietly until he could see what was happening. At first he had to blink a few times to ensure he was actually seeing what was there.

A woman fighting off two armed men, while a third looked on, and a fourth was untangling himself from a very wet cloak while standing in a stream. He focused on the woman, surprised at how well she was fending off her attackers. Sh had skill, and training, though her technique was a little off. Her opponents only chance against her was due to their numbers.

The one in the stream finally got the cloak off himself, and started to advance on the woman from behind. Lentharian made his decision right then to get involved. If nothing else, it would give him the chance to put all that training to the test in a not so dangerous situation.

He slipped a dagger out from his boot, took hold of it in the proper manner as he had been taught, and practiced, and almost casually threw the small blade at the attacker approaching the woman from behind. The blade whistled past her ear, burying itself in the man's throat. The wound was mortal, though not immediately lethal, but most people were more focused on taking the futile effort of trying to save their lives. He was no different to anyone else.

Lentharian stepped out into the clearing drawing his sword.

"Four men against one woman is not fair odds." The lone man who had been standing back turned with his sword and immediately launched an attack against him. The man's attack had several openings that Lentharian could have exploited, but he wasn't sure whether he should offer mercy or not. One stroke from his opponent got a little too close for comfort, so after a couple of more blows, he delivered a blow that went though the man's shoulder and stopped part the way through his chest.

"So, miss, would you like more assistance, or do you feel that you can take care of these pair by yourself?"

What her savior, if you could call him that wasn't aware of was that Melisandra was more than ready for the third man coming at her. The blade flying past her head, only distracted her for half a second from the fight at hand. It wasn't until the groups leader went running in the opposite direction, sword drawn, did she realize that she was no longer alone in the clearing. However considering she as busy fighting with the other two still, both of whom were bloody, she couldn't very well turn her heard to watch the battle going on out of her line of sight. It was clear though the man had lost when the sound of a body dropping reached her ears and one of her opponents took off running for his life as well as hearing the second statement from the newcomer "So, miss, would you like more assistance, or do you feel that you can take care of these pair by yourself?"

“As you can see I am down to one, at the moment,” brushing her hair back, Melisandra took a hold of the sword with both hands and stared down the blade at the lone bandit. “You can run like your one friend, or you can die like the other two, which will it be?” As expected the battered and bloody man turn and ran, only sparring the two of them the briefest of glances as he went. Lowering her sword Melisandra sighed, “What a surprise.” Turning she went to fetch her cloak from the stream. “Thank you for the assistance. I am sure if you had decided to wait a bit longer I would have gotten the upper hand.” After laying the sword down she wrung the fabric out as best she could and then carried it and her sword back to her mount. “What's a merchant doing, coming through the forest path anyways? Didn't someone warn you about the men who lurk here?” Once both items were secure the princess turned to actually look at the man who had rendered aid. She was sure she probably sounded ungrateful, but then Melisandra was the type to see killing as a last resort. With the skill he had displayed without her directly looking at him, she was sure, the stranger could have run the two dead men off without having to have taken their lives.

Since he did not react to the sight of her, she assumed he wasn't from the area. Which meant he was probably from the other kingdom. "Do you always make it a habit to kill those, you can easily outmatch, or is ridding the world of lowly bandits, something you do in your spare time?

With the death of the second member of their group, one of the woman's attackers chose to run. Lentharian was about to deal with him when he heard the woman's reply. "As you can see I am down to one, at the moment." She turned her attention to the last of her assailants, and gave him the option of retreating too. The man showed a great deal of wisdom and ran.

"Thank you for the assistance. I am sure if you had decided to wait a bit longer I would have gotten the upper hand."

He smiled at her remarks. She was probably right, but at the time, he saw the opportunity to test his skills, not necessarily to save her life.

"My apologies, my Lady. In future, if there comes a time where you are up against four opponents of similar quality, I shall merely stand back and watch, until I am invited to participate. But may I compliment you on you ability to handle the sword. You are rather competent."

He cleaned his sword thoroughly before returning it to it's scabbard. He was already going back over the fight, analysing where he had made errors. It had become habitual after his trainers made him go over every fight he had after it was over. His train of thought was broken by the woman again.

"What's a merchant doing, coming through the forest path anyways? Didn't someone warn you about the men who lurk here?"

He was going to admonish her for her incorrect declaration of his station before he remembered what it was that he was doing. He smiled to her in a slightly condescending manner.

"Traveling from one place to another. One might ask the same question of a woman of noble birth undertaking a similar route. As for warnings about ne'er-do-wells, I didn't ask so I was not told. Not that these proved to be of any concern."

"Do you always make it a habit to kill those, you can easily outmatch, or is ridding the world of lowly bandits, something you do in your spare time?"

"No,I have been simply trained that once you enter in a fight with someone, you should kill them as quickly as possible. If I had been true to my training, this one there would have died within five swings of my blade. As it was, I distracted myself thinking of whether or not to give mercy."

He gave the woman another look, trying to get a better assessment of who she could be. She was definitely high born to some level, her speech gave that away, plus her clothing and her carriage as she walked. But the fact that she wielded a sword so well made her a rather unique and interesting woman.

"If you will excuse me for a moment, I would like to get my horse." He wandered back to where he had tethered his mount, and brought it back to the clearing. He let the horse wander a little while he fetched his dagger from the corpse that it was buried in. He cleaned it and returned it to it's place in his boot.

"Pardon my intrusion, my Lady, but what would bring someone such as yourself out alone into a place such as this? Not to detract from your abilities, but a lone woman in such lands is an open invitation for trouble, more so than for a lone man."

"My apologies, my Lady. In future, if there comes a time where you are up against four opponents of similar quality, I shall merely stand back and watch, until I am invited to participate. But may I compliment you on you ability to handle the sword. You are rather competent."

If he was trying to get on her bad side, that comment was enough to make Melisandra think even less of him. Instead she merely let it go as she replied, "I shall keep that in mind should we ever cross paths again. It's been a fair amount of time since I had last been able to match blades against anyone, but this lot were nothing but brutes. No real skill to be found in all honesty." She watched him as he continued to speak, nothing how he seemed to choose his words carefully. Typical noble in her eyes.

"I could never kill with such ease, then again, my teachers never had that goal in mind." She watched him retrieve his horse. His mount was solid, though it looked more suited to a farm than carrying about a merchant, even an average looking one. While he was not hard to look at he was not by most standards, overly handsome. Melisandra was never one to fall for the pretty faced men she had met over the years to begin with. She snorted softly, the husband she was intent on avoiding was more than likely of that class. Well bred, and well polished. Like a piece of art than a living breathing man with feelings and emotions.

His last comment grated on her nerves more than the first. "Oh so you are one of those types. why is it so hard to believe that some women are fully capable of taking themselves, no matter what their station in life? As to why I am cutting through the forest and not using the main road I am trying to avoid the magi wielding man my father arranged for me to marry. I have no interest in being married of to any man of Noden, least of all it's Prince." Snatching her water skin from her saddle she took another drink of water to cool her nerves.

"I'm going as far my horse and my money can carry me." Even if it meant leaving her homeland far behind her.

"Oh so you are one of those types. why is it so hard to believe that some women are fully capable of taking themselves, no matter what their station in life?"

"No, my Lady. What I meant is that as a woman, you will be viewed as an easier target, therefore will attract more than your fair share of trouble. I was not trying to say that you were incapable of looking after yourself."

"As to why I am cutting through the forest and not using the main road I am trying to avoid the magi wielding man my father arranged for me to marry. I have no interest in being married of to any man of Noden, least of all it's Prince."

Fortunately, she was not looking at the Crown Prince of Noden when he heard her say that. His expression was one of shock, but he recovered quickly before she turned her eyes back to him. This woman was the quiet and sedate girl he was to marry? This was the Princess of Brask? So, his wife to be does not like the prospect of marrying him. But this gave him an unequalled chance to get to know her better before her father managed to find her. Well, her father would find her, he would make sure of it. A simple spirit messenger would do the trick, and the Noden representatives to the court of Brask would be able to pass on word.

Now that his business in Brask was complete, he could now go onto his other task. A little shopping in Frelu. All he needed to do is convince his fiance to come along with him.

"I'm going as far my horse and my money can carry me."

"Well, my Lady, I am traveling to the port city of Kraala in Frelu. That city would give you some wide prospects for further travel. Even though we haven't got off to the best of starts, I would not say no to a travel companion. Of course, you have little reason to trust me, but the offer is there, should you care to accept. At least, when camped, it will be a little safer. One of us can stand watch.

"And please forgive my bad manners, my name is Len Taran." He bowed slightly to the Noble woman.

Taking a harsh swallow Melisandra was not about to let it how just how right Len was. Instead she just wiped her mouth before inclining her head in his direction, “Melisandra of the Royal House of Brask.” She rolled his name about in her head, “Len Taran, you are from Noden.” It wasn't a question, but a statement of fact. His name was like many of those from the smaller kingdom so it was safe to assume that he was from there. A part of her wondered what he though of her comment about not wishing to marry the prince, then again she really didn't care. The opinion of one man, a total stranger at that, wasn't going to change her opinion.

“I can watch my own back, thank you, but I suppose it would be rude to turn down the offer of the company. Kraala is as good a place as any. Who know, luck may be on my side and there will be a ship leaving soon.” Frelu was on the border of the two kingdoms and had been in times past, completely neutral. Holding no real alliance to one side more than the other. If nothing else she could stock up on some more supplies and continue by horse if need be. The lands were vast and wide, Melisandra had plenty of options.

Rolling her cloak up, Melisandra tossed it on top of her duffel bag and then turned to him, “The sun will be setting soon. We might as well find a more suitable place to camp for the night.” Grabbing the reins of her horse she turned back towards the barely used path, “Come on boy, we still have a ways to go before we can rest.” If he followed he followed, Melisandra wasn't going to wait for him. Of course if she knew the truth of who her traveling companion was, Melisandra would have been riding as if the very demons on the underworld were after her. Fate had a strange sense of humor and had placed her right in the path of the one man she had been trying to get away from.

"So why are you taking this way to Kraala? Isn't there a much short route direct from Noden to there?" Of course he could have been doing business elsewhere and was taking the forest road for that reason. Still it was odd that no one had warned him about the bandits who used the forest now and then. She let out a small sound, Someone must really not like him, if they didn't give him warning. Then again he managed to handle himself rather well.

"Melisandra of the Royal House of Brask." With the formal declaration, he made sure that he bowed to her as would be fitting from one of the merchant class.

"I am honoured beyond words to be in your presence, Your Highness." His words were true, but not for the reasons she would deduce. He had the perfect chance to learn more of her, and hopefully improve her opinions of him in the process. "It is not everyday that I have the chance to be with royalty such as yourself."

"Len Taran, you are from Noden." A statement of fact, holding no other emotion that he could detect. She seemed to bear him no direct malice due to his kingdom of origin. That made him relax a little.

He made sure that he was ready to travel. He watered the horse, and checked that everything was secure.

"I can watch my own back, thank you, but I suppose it would be rude to turn down the offer of the company."

"I didn't mean to say that you couldn't, My Lady. I assume that by the way you're traveling, you would prefer your royal status not to be mentioned in passing? Anyway, all I suggested was that would be easier for us both with we worked together while we traveled the same route."

He got on his mount , and followed Melisandra as she rode on. Her horse was a good one, maybe even better than his personal steed back in his castle. She was a natural in the saddle, as much as she was with the blade. Her self confidence and the fire within her personality he found to be rather attractive. He was starting to reassess his thoughts about marrying the Princess of Brask. She was turning into a much more fascinating woman with each passing minute.

"So why are you taking this way to Kraala? Isn't there a much short route direct from Noden to there?"

"Well, I had some other business waiting for me in Brask. That has been dealt with, so I was on my way to the next place of business, namely Kraala. And as I am not on a fixed timetable, I can accompany you for as long as you like.

"Pardon my asking, but wont your father be a little upset with your plans for your future? No offence, but I hope he doesn't take exception to my presence should you be found. And what is it about the Prince of Noden that rankles you so greatly? I am curious to know, as most of the people of Noden are neutral to him, and some actually do like him."

I assume that by the way you're traveling, you would prefer your royal status not to be mentioned in passing?

"Yes actually. It will make things easier and I don't need anyone doting upon me when I only want a simple task done. It will also give me a change to put my ground between myself and Brask. It may surprise you, but I just want to be treated like everyone else and not feel as if the only reason they are doing business with me is because of who I am. Or rather the title I hold." Melisandra was like no other high born woman. She enjoyed actually doing things for herself. She enjoyed her freedom and saw that there was more to life than just finding a good husband.

"Pardon my asking, but wont your father be a little upset with your plans for your future? No offence, but I hope he doesn't take exception to my presence should you be found.

"Oh I am sure he will be more than a little upset. Downright furious possibly. And it will serve him right. He shouldn't be surprised by any of this. I told him the same day he told me I was to be wed to the Prince, that I had no plans to go through with it. I am sure once he finds my letter than he will curse the loose hand he raised me with in the past. Instead of the perfect little doll who would grown into a suitable princess, he got a willful young woman who would cast aside her title as easily as she picks up a sword."

She turned her head to look back at Len, "As for how he will take to you," Melisandra shrugged, "it will depend on his mood. If he's upset enough he may forget that at one point my peers were the same men who knows guard his castle and our lands. Up until a few years ago I was allowed to practice my sword and fighting skills at my leisure. He cared not that I was down working with the young squires and knights."

And what is it about the Prince of Noden that rankles you so greatly?

"What rankles me about him?" Since she was holding the reins in one hand Len would be able to see her count off the reasons why she did not wish to wed, "I do not know him. I have nothing against getting married at some point but I would prefer someone I actually know."

Her middle finger joined her index finger, "I don't love him. Why should something as important as that be cast aside for political angling?"

"He was picked out for me as if you would pick a stallion for a mare. I am not an animal and capable of choosing my own husband." The ring finger uncurled slowly.

"I do not wish to marry a magic user. I could never trust someone whom I don't know, and for all that I DO know could use that same magic to make me do things against my will." Melisandra uncurled her pinkie finger.

"And the last reason, any, man who would marry someone sight unseen, a veritable stranger, just to make everyone but himself happy is spineless and not capable of thinking for himself. I want a husband, not a puppet." Her now open palm dropped down to her thigh as they continued to ride. "So he find another to wed, because it will not be me."

"It will make things easier and I don't need anyone doting upon me when I only want a simple task done."

He wanted to agree with her, knowing exactly how it felt. But he couldn't, not without giving away his secret. He nodded sagely, as if he was taking time to imagine what that must be like.

"At first, the thought of someone doing things for me sounds rather nice, but then I could see how it would be frustrating after a while. Never fear, My Lady, I shall not tell anyone of your identity." 'At least not until I have won your heart, Your Highness.'

He listened to the rest of her responses, taking careful note of the reasons for not marrying him. The last two struck the hardest, the last was worst of all. Both of those he could handle and retort in his own way.

"I do not wish to marry a magic user. I could never trust someone whom I don't know, and for all that I DO know could use that same magic to make me do things against my will."

"Well, your take on magic is wrong, My Lady. Magic in Noden is like any other tool or weapon. It's used to make life easier for the people of the Kingdom. Which includes defending the kingdom too. Now, taking control of someone is the same as running them through with a sword in the eyes of Noden. So, if the Prince were to do that, he would not be Prince for long. There wouldn't be much left to bury afterward, that's for certain.

"I had the dubious pleasure of seeing a Magician executed for controlling his wife to give him children. They stopped him from calling on his inner Spark, then they turned the Spark into a fire. His screams were horrible, and you could feel something else burning up too." Lentharian shuddered knowing the man's very soul was also consumed by the flames. Laws concerning Magic in Noden were not crossed lightly. Only if one was a fool.

"And the last reason, any, man who would marry someone sight unseen, a veritable stranger, just to make everyone but himself happy is spineless and not capable of thinking for himself. I want a husband, not a puppet."

It took all his self control not to grit his teeth at that. This selfish woman had no idea of the responsibilities of her rank, and station in life.

"My Lady, he's a Prince. He never had the chance to decide who he would marry. His marriage would be for the betterment of the people of Noden and which ever Kingdom his wife came from. As the future monarch, he has his people to consider, rule and protect. He has no other personal goals but to make his people's lives as best as they can. At least, I hope so."

He looked over at the Princess, weighing the words, and deciding he'd return the favour to her.

"So, you care so little about your people you'd run away rather than face marrying a man you haven't seen? Or you couldn't stand up against your father? I may be a simple merchant, but I shoulder my responsibilities, even those I don't like. To do otherwise would be wrong."

He rode along for a little more, then a thought hit. His face took on an 'ah-ha' expression, before he smiled and looked back at the Princess.

"You said you wouldn't marry a man that you haven't met, and didn't know. Have you tried to meet him? Try to get to know him? Are you afraid that his might not be as bad as you make him out to be? What if it turned out that this man, the Prince, was actually likable? Not that I am saying he is. Just asking about the possibility."

Melisandra was personally getting tired of being called "My Lady," no matter how often she heard it still made her seem more than she was. Then again she wasn't about to just tell Len to use her first name. He seemed a bit too refined to use a woman's first name unless he was on a close personal relationship with her. AS she listened to him talk about how the misuse of magic was looked upon in Noden, a shiver ran down her spine. It didn't stop her from replying as she did next though. "And as I have come to know from simple observation, because who ever truly cares if a woman hears such thing, those far enough up the tree care little for the rules if they can get away from it. Anyone who is truly intelligent and capable of such evil is more than competent enough to avoid detection."

She dropped the reins in her lap, her mount continuing on without need of direction, as her hands rose to push her hair back from her face. Learning how to fight had taught her the how to read the subtleties of body language. As such she was only mildly surprised by the response she got. "So, you care so little about your people you'd run away rather than face marrying a man you haven't seen? Or you couldn't stand up against your father? I may be a simple merchant, but I shoulder my responsibilities, even those I don't like. To do otherwise would be wrong." It did set her teeth on age, and Melisandra had to take a very slow and deep breath before she responded.

"It wouldn't be wrong, just a poor way to do business. As for how I feel about my people; I care for them deeply. Not enough however to sacrifice my own feelings for a marriage of poor political planning. What is to be gained by it? Noden and Brask have been at peace for more than a generation. Even at the height and darkest part of the war, Noden was unable to topple Brask. A marriage would guarantee nothing other than the heirs of both kingdoms, being tied to each other and miserable."

Taking another breath she directed her gaze at him, "As for standing up to my father. I have made my position clear from day one. However as they say 'Actions speak louder than words.' I do not mince words or beat around the bush, but do you actually think WHAT I think and HOW I feel mean anything? He's made his mind up and so have I."

Melisandra let out a very unladylike snort, "You must not run the gossip circles Len. If you did you would know the date has already been set and it is certainly not enough time between this very moment and then, to not only decide if I could like him, let alone consent to marry him. Meeting him would give everyone concerned the false impression that I have the notion to go through with it."

She rode ahead of Len and then brought her horse to a short stop in front of his, forcing him to stop, "You can think me selfish and spoiled all you wish. Don't deny it I can see it in your face, the fact remains if my father or his parents truly cared about their children as much as they profess to they would have gone about this a different way. No instead they take it upon themselves to pair two people who have never shared something as mundane as a meal, together. I can't speak for the King and Queen of Noden, but my parents actually had a say in the own marriage. They were friends long before they wed and not strangers doing something 'for the good of the people.' Nothing can be done for the good of others, if the people involved are not given a choice." Melisandra started moving again, giving Len her back.

"You are also under the false impression that leaving is a simple and easy matter for me. Thank the gods for me though that I actually know how to fend for myself. If I were truly the spoiled and pampered girl you think I am, I would have never made it this far on my own. I am sure that's the picture my father and those damn advisers of his have painted." She waved her hand casually, "Oh the Princess? She is a quite and high born lady. A blessing upon her station and the Royal House. Quite eager to be wed to the prince and unite our lands." Melisandra did a fairly decent impression of the high and nasal voice of her father's main adviser, Luc.

"And as I have come to know from simple observation, because who ever truly cares if a woman hears such thing, those far enough up the tree care little for the rules if they can get away from it. Anyone who is truly intelligent and capable of such evil is more than competent enough to avoid detection."

"So, he uses magic, and he's a Prince, therefore he can break the rules with impunity?" Lentharian shook his head. "Well, Mel, you need to find out more about Noden and their nobles. More than one has been executed for their abuse of Magic. Magic is the greatest responsibility that a person in the Kingdom can have. And because of that power, abuse of that power is punished severely. But as it would seem, you feel that a user of magic is evil to start with. If that is the case, Mel, you are wrong."

"It wouldn't be wrong, just a poor way to do business."

"It has nothing to do with business. We all have our responsibilities, Mel. Personal, Family, Business and Community. You don't fulfill your responsibilities, then someone has to, or things go bad. At least that's how I was raised."

He listened to more of her talk about what was happening to her, how unfair it was and all other related topics. She was definitely a passionate woman, and when her fire was up, she was nigh on unstoppable. If she ever fell for a man, the Gods would both bless him and curse him in in a single action. She would make his life heaven on Earth when she loved him, and hell on Earth when they fought. He also suspected that she would stop at nothing to let him know how she felt about her intended partner.

"You can think me selfish and spoiled all you wish. Don't deny it I can see it in your face... If I were truly the spoiled and pampered girl you think I am, I would have never made it this far on my own."

"Forgive me, Mel, for not hiding the truth from you. Pampered? I don't think so, for the very reasons you have spoken. Spoiled, most definitely. A decision has been made that you do not agree with, and rather than doing as you should, you have a tantrum and run away. Your father might be angry, but what of your mother? Wouldn't she be beside herself in fright concerning the fate of her daughter? And if your parents had a say in their union, it would suggest to me that your mother would have some say in matters of importance. It would appear that she supports this move as well.

"If these two people, who married for love, have arranged your marriage, maybe there is some wisdom that you're not privy to? I guess you never actually asked them why this was being done. You do seem to be a person who makes up her mind and does not change it. Which is a pity, because so far you seem to be a rather intelligent person. But then, I might be wrong."

"Oh the Princess? She is a quite and high born lady. A blessing upon her station and the Royal House. Quite eager to be wed to the prince and unite our lands."

He laughed at the mimicry of the voice. Her nasal sounding voice as she spoke almost made him fall of his horse. But he had heard those very same words spoken to himself and his father by the representative of Brask to the court.

"Sorry, Mel, but the voice is hilarious. Is that how someone you know sounds?"

Before he could say anymore, he felt it nearby. A place where the Living Earth shared her bounty with those who had the wisdom to tap it. Apart from the Power that fed the Spark & Flame, the land itself would be more plentiful, beautiful, restful.

"Mel, if my memory serves me well, there is a good place for us to make camp nearby." Len rode about looking for a game trail or path to the place. His luck was with him. A well used game trail joined the track they rode along. "This way, Mel." This time he took the lead, and didn't bother waiting for her to follow or not. If she decided to part company, then he would notify Frelu and Brask of her plans.

When he found it, it was as he thought it would be. The trees were larger, more hale and majestic than their cousin even mere feet away. The grass was more lush, the air cleaner and more fragrant, rich with aromas pleasant to the nose. Even his mount sensed the difference and seemed more at ease. He closed his eyes, feeling the 'Blood' of the Living Earth flowing around him. He heard the sounds of water, and moved his horse closer to the source of the noise. A small pond, no more than 10 feet across and a similar length, was full of crystal clear water.

"So, Mel, will this suffice as a place to make camp?"

"Your father might be angry, but what of your mother? Wouldn't she be beside herself in fright concerning the fate of her daughter?"

Bringing up what her mother would think brought Melisandra and her horse to a near standstill. She shook her head and said nothing about it for the moment. Instead she just continued on her way with Len. "And yes I do. My father's main adviser. A pompous jackass of a man who is a worse gossip than any of the castle maids." There were days were Melisandra felt the man held far to much influence with her father really. Before all this her father had been fairly content to let her come and go as she pleased and had never before broached the subject of her marrying anyone, let alone the Prince of Noden.

"So, Mel, will this suffice as a place to make camp?"

Looking around the spot he wished to make camp Melissandra nodded, "Well even though you clearly weren't warned about the bandits you were obviously were given some good advice about where to make camp." Dismounting her horse she set about, rather quickly removing the saddle and saddle bags from his back.

"As far as my mother goes Len, the dead don't have opinions on the thoughts and actions of the living. Were she alive, my father would have never approached this proposal the way he did. Father," she set the heavy saddle down and then grabbed her cloak to toss over a branch ,"says I get my fire from her. I don't remember her really, but he's not the only one to say that I take after her more than him." Grabbing her bedroll Melissandra began to unroll it under the shade of one large and thick tree.

"And my name is Melissandra. You don't know me well enough to call me Mel." It wasn't a scolding remark, but the fact was they were not friends and it wasn't for him to address her as though he was. Once that was done she began to collect wood for the fire. There were some sizable rocks that had already been set up, which meant someone before them had used the area for camp. "So since we have delved quiet far enough into my own life, what about you Len? Have you lived your own life or followed the path others told you was RIGHT for you?"

Like Melissandra, Lentharian started to prepare himself a place to sleep. He was noticing the increase sounds of the local wildlife as they returned to the node. He found the spot that had been used for a camp fire, and dug the pit nice and deep.

"And my name is Melissandra. You don't know me well enough to call me Mel."

"Very well, My Lady. I do happen to know that within Brask, Melissandra is not a common name. With that name mentioned, and your bearing to others, it would be easy for the village idiot to work out who you are. I apologise for seeming to be to close for such a form of address." He bowed to her.

"So since we have delved quiet far enough into my own life, what about you Len? Have you lived your own life or followed the path others told you was RIGHT for you?"

He sat for a moment, contemplating her question. "You're right. I have delved rather deeply into your life, and I am sorry for prying. And it is only fair to do the same in return.

"I am from an old family in Noden. We can show our lineage back through centuries. My family has some status in the Kingdom. I was taught at a young age that when it was time, I would replace my father and continue doing his work. I will admit to resenting it from time to time. But I saw the pride my father takes in what he does. He is proud of his work, and he takes his responsibilities seriously too.

"I guess I had little choice, but I have accepted it, and I am happy to do as he does." He walked over to his saddle and pulled out a small pouch. He poured out some stones that looked like rubies at first glance. But when looked at closer, each stone had a bright glow within.

"Fire Eyes. Rubies that are found in special places in Noden. Only Magicians can unearth them, and work them. Once they have been made, they are excellent jewelry pieces. When they touch the skin, the brightness within them is taken into the wearer, giving them a halo... a healthier glow. They become radiant. I have a customer in Kraala for these. In return I'll get some good quality Emeralds. There is a noble in Noden who has a strong desire for Emeralds." He put the stones back in his pouch, returning it to his saddle bags.

"Is there anything else you would care to ask about me, My Lady? Or shall we take supper first?"

"I guess I had little choice, but I have accepted it, and I am happy to do as he does." she fought the urge to shake her head as she continued to gather wood. "I suppose some people can be content to have their lives planned out for them. Though it does take some of the surprise out of life."

Once she had a good armful of wood and kindling she came back into the center of the camp and piled the wood up. "Who needs how to do needlepoint when you can learn how to make a camp fire." Melisandra was unlike any other princess before her, that was clear from the way she handled the flint and steel and had the fire started and going within a few strikes. She laughed softly, "My cousins wouldn't last two minutes without their army of servants and a proper 3 course or more meal three times a day." Len was pulling out the rubies as she was heading back to her bedroll.

"Fire Eyes. Rubies that are found in special places in Noden. Only Magicians can unearth them, and work them. Once they have been made, they are excellent jewelry pieces...I have a customer in Kraala for these. In return I'll get some good quality Emeralds. There is a noble in Noden who has a strong desire for Emeralds."

"They are quiet lovely. I am sure you'll have no trouble with trade." Melisandra sat down upon her bedroll and began to rummage through her saddle bag and pulled out two wrapped portions of bread and roasted meat. "You are in luck my friend I happened to have stocked my bags very well before leaving, just in case anything came up along the way. And of course, " she held pointed to the very full wine skin, "some of the best wine to be found in the two kingdoms."

"Is there anything else you would care to ask about me, My Lady?"

Grabbing the wine skin Melisandra, pulled the stopper out, "So what about your love life? You've gone the way of the well worn path for your life, but I won't assume you've pledged yourself to to just anyone that your parents suggested would be a good match without actually knowing them."

Raising the wineskin to her lips Melisandra took a slow sip, "And you are right, my name isn't a common one. Something else to thank my mother for, when we are around others I suppose it would be wise not to use my full first name. " Compromise was not something Melisandra was a stranger to. Of course she also planned to keep her cloak on, while around others. In Kraala the odds were low that someone would recognize her on sight, but one could never be too careful. As she took another sip, Melisandra began to contemplate just where she would go from there. Visiting her distant relations would be wonderful, but troublesome.

"I suppose some people can be content to have their lives planned out for them. Though it does take some of the surprise out of life."

"There is a degree of comfort with the certainty, but by and far, surprises do, and have, occurred frequently enough. At least for my liking."

Melissandra was well versed in field craft, and had the fire going in short order. She also sat her self down and was rummaging for food, and she withdrew two packets.

"You are in luck my friend I happened to have stocked my bags very well before leaving, just in case anything came up along the way. And of course, " she held pointed to the very full wine skin, "some of the best wine to be found in the two kingdoms."

"I do not want to insult your generosity, but I have my own food that I will have, though I will accept any of the wine you are willing to offer." With that, he found a bag, removing two tennis ball size lumps of what looked like cook meat. He bit into one and started chewing.

"So what about your love life? You've gone the way of the well worn path for your life, but I won't assume you've pledged yourself to to just anyone that your parents suggested would be a good match without actually knowing them."

"Well, as I said my family is old, and one of their traditions is arranged marriages. My parents were such a couple, and they are very happy together. It took them time to get to know the other, but they found themselves to be in love afterward.

"As for me, yes, I have been pledged to a woman who until recently I had not seen. I will admit to not looking forward to the union with her after hearing about her, she did not have much appeal to me. But since meeting her, I have found her to be a most beautiful and intriguing woman. I will also admit to looking forward to learning more about her, the real her, rather than the one I was told of.

"And before you ask, I am not fully sure what she thinks of me, as we have not had much chance to talk, though she has described her feelings in a manner that suggests she does not know me well enough yet."

He took another bite of his food, chewing it thoughtfully.

"My Lady, since you have forsaken your duties as a Princess, what do you see yourself doing to make enough money to live? I'm sure that you have sufficient wealth handy to you to see you through for a good period of time, but eventually that reserve will dwindle to nothing.

"And may I have some of the wine please?"

Melisandra tossed the wine to Len, while she undid the string holding the paper around the roasted meat. It was still warm and spicy odor made her smile softly. Peeling off a section, she answered, "An interesting question, I would probably get involved in Trade. Horse trading to be specific. I know more than my fair share about horses and breeding them, so it would be just a matter of getting settled first really."

She turned her head to look over her own mount, "I would have taken my prize Stallion, Lian, but Danko, is a fine substitute. He also stands out less than his half brother. Black horses are an everyday thing, storm cloud gray with an all white mane and tail however, are not." Melisandra turned to the piece of meat she was holding and took a bite out of it. "He's been in quite a few races as well, so even if I was not recognized right away he would be." Melisandra then tucked into her meal, alternating between bread as meat as she reclined back against the trunk of the large tree.

"I remember one of my tutors going on about how it was vulgar and unbecoming of a lady of my station to be so interested not only in weapons, but in horses and horse breeding as well. My response was simply that every man and woman for that matter of all stations needed to be able to defend themselves and to be able to have a good piece of horseflesh. Life cannot always be able political intrigue and in my case, looking the part of the role I am to play. You never know for sure the interest of those you hold court with and even those with very little in common may be able to find common ground in the everyday things."

She licked a bead of grease and juice from her hand, "Not to mention I believe that all people should be well rounded, if they aren't well what happens when you and your spouse have run out of things to talk about? Then again what do I know? I am just a woman and a high born one at that. Common sense does not have to be a part of who I am. I am just here to keep my future husband happy and give birth to his heirs." Melisandra shook her head and placed another portion of soft bread in her mouth. She chewed silently as she stared off into the fire.

Len caught the wineskin Melisandra threw to him, and took a pull from it. His expression was one of approval. She hadn't been far from the truth. He hadn't tasted much better recently.

"An interesting question, I would probably get involved in Trade. Horse trading to be specific. I know more than my fair share about horses and breeding them, so it would be just a matter of getting settled first really."

Len stifled a laugh. "Sorry, My Lady. But there is more to a trade than just knowing about the matter at hand. You might be good at recognizing horse flesh, and how to breed good stock. But what about buying the stock to start with? What reputation do you have? What about the knowledge of that kind of horse to sell in what place? I know Noden value different traits than Brask do. And what about securing feed? And having the right amounts on hand, allowing for supply of fresh stock? Somewhere to keep the animals while you're breeding them?

"Are you aware that there are different customs when merchants deal with each other in Frelu, than in Brask? And that those customs if not observed will drive your costs up? You might be well versed in the finer points of horse flesh, My Lady, but as a trader, which you would also have to be, you are, well, a rank novice. Not even an apprentice."

Len took a bite from his meal as he watched Melisandra staring into the flames. She was deep in thought, and he considered it rude to disturb someone during such times. When she stopped staring at the flames, he put his question to her.

"What is it that really troubles you, Melisandra?"

"First of I said MAYBE I would get into horse trading and second I said I would do this AFTER getting settled. I am not the rank novice you think I am considering half of the castle's mounted guard are on horses I myself traded for whether as the princess of Brask or simply as Melisandra. Danko's mother and sire were part of that trade. Do you think I just settled for any horse without being away of where they came from? I also never said I intended to settle in Frelu, Len."

She set her food aside, her hunger for the moment was dampened. "As for what troubles me. Its just the fact that I could end up so close to being free and having it snatched away. Either by my father or someone else. Nothing says homecoming like being dragged kicking and screaming. And it will be just my luck that my father will have either made excuses to prevent the Prince from knowing I've been missing or he will know and it won't change his mind about going through with this." Melisandra wrapped her food back up and set it aside before returning her eyes to the fire.

"Duty means nothing if you cannot be happy or even proud to live your life that way." She turned her gaze towards him, "Tell me Len could you honestly be happily married to your intended even if you would never be happy to be paired to each other and actually love one another?"

Len held up his hands while he swallowed his food.

"My Lady, you have focused on specifics, rather than the points I was trying to raise.

"I have not questioned you knowledge of horses, and your ability to judge the quality of them. But the breeding of them involves more that just buying and selling of the livestock.

"As for your settling in Frelu, I was using it as an example of the differences between the merchants of different Kingdoms."

He took another drink of wine before he threw it back to Melisandra.

"Well, My Lady, you had best start thinking of what you are going to do. I mean no offence to you, but if you find yourself without the money, you will be in great danger. You may not like it, but it is the way of the world right now."

"As for what troubles me. Its just the fact that I could end up so close to being free and having it snatched away. Either by my father or someone else. Nothing says homecoming like being dragged kicking and screaming. And it will be just my luck that my father will have either made excuses to prevent the Prince from knowing I've been missing or he will know and it won't change his mind about going through with this.

"So, you can't see yourself ever coming to like or even love the man you marry? What if he makes an effort to know you, to make you feel appreciated? Would all of that be for nothing? My parents were an arranged marriage, and they had little in common at the start of the marriage. But they worked together to get to know each other, and now, they love each other. Yes, it would have been better if it were the other way, but they made the choice to make it work.

"With the one I am pledged to marry, I am certain that with time and effort, we can grow to like each other, if not eventually fall in love."

Len spent the time quietly eating the rest of his meal, trying to think how best to salvage the situation. Melisandra was closer to the truth than she thought. He was going to win over his bride to be. All he needed to do was figure out the actual method that would best succeed.

"And if you don't then what? You spend the rest of your lives together, without love? I could not live like that Len. Then again I cannot see myself pledging myself to someone I didn't already love. So I am a strong headed young woman with romantic notions. I can't change that," Melisandra got to her feet and put the food back into her saddle bag. As she tossed the bag over the same branch her cloak was hanging from she tested to see how dry it was. "Well so much for sleeping under this tonight. At least that idiot didn't put a hole into the fabric."

Returning back to her bedroll, Melisandra stroked her fingers over the locket at her neck. It was the few reminders of her mother that she had. "I don't want the perfect partner, no one is perfect. I do however want someone who actually wants be because of me. Not just because he's been told I am the one from him." Grabbing a few more bundles of wood she added them to the fire and stoked it back to life. "Do you want to take the first watch or shall I?"

While Len was good company, Melisandra was starting to feel the need to be alone with her thoughts. She did need more of a plan that much was true but she was not about to return back home with her tail between her legs. No she was going to make this work, one way or another.

"And if you don't then what? You spend the rest of your lives together, without love?"

"And what of couples who marry, loving each other and then finding that they are no longer in love? While love may come unbidden to the heart initially, My Lady, it is through work, and effort, that it remains there. That is why my parents now love each other when they did not when they were wed.

"But enough of this weighty talk. Practicalities would suggest you take the first watch. It would give more time for your cloak to dry, and will aid you in your sleep."

Lentharian readied his place to sleep, settling himself down.

"Thank you, Princess Melisandra of Brask, for allowing me to keep you company in your travels, even just the short distance. I hope, if we do continue together, that our discussions will be more jovial, and less thought and emotion provoking."

He closed his eyes, entering into a meditative state that allowed him to tap into the power pooling within the area their camp had been set up in. He felt the rich earthiness of the Living Earth's 'Blood' enter his being, slowly seeping into the place where such energies were kept. He did not force the energy in, nor did he alter the flow. He simply let small portion of what passed through him to remain.

He rolled over, and in the middle of his sigh, he spoke "Hasah Hellah".

'Yes, My Master.' Even within the confines of his mind, the voice sounded like a breeze blowing in the trees.

'You see the woman that camps with me. She guards our camp this night. Aid her in her duties. Carry the sounds to her ears. Move the leaves that obscure her vision. Refresh her breath with clean air.'

'As is your will, My Master.' Lentharian felt the Air Elemental return to wherever it waited and watched, content that the night would be free of nasty surprises.

First watch went well for the first half hour or so. Of course Melisandra eventually had to find something to occupy herself, as she didn't expect much of anything to happen. No the only thing that had happened beside her keeping the fire going was the occasional stray breeze here and there. After awhile Melisandra retrieved her sword and put the free time to use, cleaning and sharpening her blade. Once that was done, she did as she had done every night since her father has put a stop to her lessons. Melisandra had to admit the fight earlier had shown her where she needed improvement in her own skills, so she worked on her thrusts and parries. As she moved nearly silently on the other side of the fire, Len's words came to the front of her mind once again.

He was right, she would have to find a away to support herself and she would be damned if it involved working on her back. No she was intelligent and schooled in many things, Melisandra would find her path, one way or another. How long that would last was another matter. If she were lucky her father wouldn't track her down, all that quickly, but one he did the princess knew he would force her back home.

Hours passed and it would soon be time to wake Len for his turn at watch. Her cloak was dry, but Melisandra was not ready to bed down. Instead she laid the flat of her sword against her shoulder and headed for the pond, after fetching her soap and wash rag from her saddle bag, it was time for a bath. Once she was sure no one could see her, Melisandra stripped out of her clothes and walked into the water until it was just above her waist. Letting out a sigh Melisandra began to hum as she washed away the day's sweat and grime. In all honesty it felt great to have had the chance to actually do something that warranted a bath. The pond water was surprisingly warm and felt good to her tired and sore muscles. It was a good thing Len was asleep otherwise she might have felt the need to move further out of sight.
