Porn in the USA: Conservatives are biggest consumers
February 2009 by Ewen Callaway

Americans may paint themselves in increasingly bright shades of red and blue, but new research finds one thing that varies little across the nation: the liking for online pornography.

A new nationwide study of anonymised credit-card receipts from a major online adult entertainment provider finds little variation in consumption between states.

"When it comes to adult entertainment, it seems people are more the same than different," says Benjamin Edelman at Harvard Business School.

However, there are some trends to be seen in the data. Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds.

"Some of the people who are most outraged turn out to be consumers of the very things they claimed to be outraged by," Edelman says.

Political divide

Edelman spends part of his time helping companies such as Microsoft and AOL detect advertising fraud. Another consulting client runs dozens of adult websites, though he says he is not at liberty to identify the firm.

That company did, however, provide Edelman with roughly two years of credit card data from 2006 to 2008 that included a purchase date and each customer's postal code.

After controlling for differences in broadband internet access between states – online porn tends to be a bandwidth hog – and adjusting for population, he found a relatively small difference between states with the most adult purchases and those with the fewest.

The biggest consumer, Utah, averaged 5.47 adult content subscriptions per 1000 home broadband users; Montana bought the least with 1.92 per 1000. "The differences here are not so stark," Edelman says.

Number 10 on the list was West Virginia at 2.94 subscriptions per 1000, while number 41, Michigan, averaged 2.32.

Eight of the top 10 pornography consuming states gave their electoral votes to John McCain in last year's presidential election – Florida and Hawaii were the exceptions. While six out of the lowest 10 favoured Barack Obama.

Old-fashioned values

Church-goers bought less online porn on Sundays – a 1% increase in a postal code's religious attendance was associated with a 0.1% drop in subscriptions that day. However, expenditures on other days of the week brought them in line with the rest of the country, Edelman finds.

Residents of 27 states that passed laws banning gay marriages boasted 11% more porn subscribers than states that don't explicitly restrict gay marriage.

To get a better handle on other associations between social attitudes and pornography consumption, Edelman melded his data with a previous study on public attitudes toward religion.

States where a majority of residents agreed with the statement "I have old-fashioned values about family and marriage," bought 3.6 more subscriptions per thousand people than states where a majority disagreed. A similar difference emerged for the statement "AIDS might be God's punishment for immoral sexual behaviour."

"One natural hypothesis is something like repression: if you're told you can't have this, then you want it more," Edelman says.

Given my interest in porn I may not be as liberal as I thought. ;)

If I can recall correctly it goes something like so...

A person that believes what they are watching is wrong will, in an attempt to eliminate all traces of evidence against them, overcompensates by fanatically going against it. Of course only fueling their obsession.

On another note. I bet there is a huge untaped market for gay Satan/jesus porn. :D

This article is a little dumb. Within most states there are very blue districts and very red ones. You can't paint a whole state with that broad a brush just because they voted for Obama or McCain. You could poll a 1000 subscribers to see who they voted for and at least have some decent data.

I guess I'm conservative because I get my porn for free? About the only porn I look at is bdsm porn once in a while looking for ideas.

Like this one:

Makes you just want to tie someone to the couch.

Hell, you are only talking about less than one percent of broadband users. They could all be Muslim as far as you know.

Porn in the USA: Muslims are biggest consumers!

Makes about as much sense.

The most virulent opponents to porn I've ever met are hardcore feminists. It's demeaning to women, and so on. Somehow I doubt they pulled the lever for the Palin ticket.

I agree with WD that this "research" is flawed, considerably. They say they controlled the results for broadband access, which is good. But they haven't controlled for a host of other factors.

For example, not all Americans vote - and unless they start adding "Do you buy porn?" to election day exit polls, there's no way to know if you're even dealing with the same sample group.

WD is also right about the counties, of course. Click on any state here, and you'll see a mix of red and blue in most cases. Exceptions being Oklahoma and Alaska (every county solid red) and VT, NH, CT, RI, MA, and HI (all solid blue).

You guys are missing a great chance.

Blue states are smarter, thus they find their porn for free.

Yeah, my main thought was that blue states don't look at any less porn, they are just better at pirating it.

There isn't as much access to broadband in rural areas who would tend to vote for McCain. Obama is addressing it in the stimulus bill with about 7 billion dollars. Rural electrification as they say.

That's because Obama listens to people like Mark Warner.

"We delivered broadband to the most remote areas of our state, because if you can send a job to Bangalore, India, you sure as heck can send one to Danville, VA and Flint, MI, and Scranton, PA, and Peoria, IL. In a global economy, you should have to leave your home town to find a world-class job.

Let me tell you about a place called Lebanon — Lebanon, Virginia. Lebanon is in the coalfields of southwest Virginia, and everyone in that whole town could fit right here on the convention floor. Lebanon is like many small towns in America, it has seen the industries that sustained it downsized, outsourced, or shut down.

Now, some folks look at towns like Lebanon and say, “Tough luck. In the global economy, you’ve lost.” But we believed that we shouldn’t, and couldn’t, give up on our small towns and expect the rest of the state to prosper. And that’s what brought me, towards the end of my term, to the high school gym in Lebanon. To announce that we were going to bring over 300 high-tech jobs. Jobs that paid twice the county average.

One student told a reporter from the Washington Post that before this, he always thought he’d have to move away to get a good job and raise a family. I just heard from this young man, Michael Kisor. Today he is a junior at Virginia Tech. His older brother just moved back home to Lebanon because there was an information technology job open for him that was just too good to pass up.

That’s a story worth rewriting all across America."

The fact is that lots of people look at porn. It's a big, wide open tent. This is clearly not a scientific study, although if I had a nickel for every nutty thing WD posted a link to, I'd be rich. But ok. Bad bad linking, Papa Shank!

I think this falls into the category of "news stories" that make it to the top of the pile because they seem to affirm existing preconceived notions about people whom we do not like. It also seems to hoist them on their own petard, which is always a popular genre of news story. Finally, it stars Mormons, and evangelicals and porn. Bingo, we hit the trifecta, Mabel, put it on the air! :D

I like Mark Warner. I'm basically happy with what he did with his time as governor, and would have voted for him again were he legally able to run. I hope he figures out how to keep in politics.

LOL, I was thinking something similar myself. :D

I'm not disgusted with Shank; I'm disgusted with the source.

New Scientist magazine. This is beneath them, it really is.

He has a phenomenal approval rating!

Ah, I've never read it.

Yep, you'd be in the 5% who will see their taxes go up.

I honestly don't think Obama could have won Virginia without Warner. Not just because he spent so much time as a surrogate there, but because his name alone opened up so many discussions.

"I'm here on behalf of Obama for President, Warner for Senate, and (local person) for Congress." Especially in the beginning, it was Warner, more than anything else, that kept them from slamming the door.

He can "keep in politics" as long as he wants to! No term limits for U.S. Senators. And if anyone doubts his popularity in the state of Virginia, take a look at these maps and compare.

The winning map for Obama, Nov. 4, 2008.

The winning map for Warner, same day.

That took me a while. Got it. Good one, WD. :p

Totally! The VA campaign was so smarty pants.

ETA: I volunteered in VA too. Funny, I don't remember a Mr. Mohegan.

True that on the senate seat. And I'm not surprised to hear that his name was the door opener.

I won't be surprised to see his name on a national ticket at some point. Smart guy, and good at what he does.

Smarty pants indeed.

Mr. Mohegan volunteered incognito, oddly enough. Can't say he remembers a Ms. Woods. ;)

Interesting. A lot of generalities, but still interesting. Unfortunately, it'd be hard to get anything more specific.

"Sir, are you a Christian?"

"Yes, ma'am."

"And do you watch porn?"

*turns off playboy channel* "No! Pervert!"

*hangs up phone*

The 4 states with the highest percentage of black people went to McCain. Therefore, black people voted for McCain.

Just kidding. Actually 98% of blacks voted for Obama in both Georgia and Mississippi.

It's amazing that Mississippi elects republicans to national office. Democrats get spotted the black vote of 37%. (pretty much) That means the republican has to get their 50% out of the remaining 63%. Or almost 80% of the white vote. If they turn out in the same proportion. And looking at the exit poll from the last senate race the republican got 92% of the white vote. I was a little surprised by that myself.

Chambliss almost lost in Georgia and he got 70% of the white vote. There are a lot of white people in Georgia who will always vote for the democrat because that's the way their parents and grandparents voted. Real country folks. They didn't care about guns or abortion. Just that democrats were for the little guy.

I'm not against the little guy. I just never got a job from one. And I don't think government is much good at anything other than war and making people wait in lines.
