Scarlet Stanford, thirty-six years old, 5’5 and weighed in at about 130 with a 36D chest. Her eyes deep emerald green and rich deep red hair with a passel of loose curls that dangled down to the small of her back. The red hair always accented her creamy ivory skin; one could tell with the slight few freckles over the bridge of her nose that she was an Irish beauty through and through.
From a quiet small town in Pennsylvania to the large noisy city of New York Scarlet left her mark in the field of journalism. If there was ever a go getter girl with fire and spunk it was her, she volunteered for everything, the danger level was what excited her, like when she recently went over to Iraq and reported on the war, or when she went to Africa and covered the guerillas who dealt in arms deals, she also loved the piece that allowed her to talk with the number one cocaine cartel in America. Nothing was ever too dangerous for her; she loved seeing her name on the bi-line with a prize Pulitzer piece, which happened often over the last 12 plus years.
She missed being a free lance writer, but five years back she couldn’t pass up the job offer that was tossed before her to write for Tantra magazine. Tantra was a cross between Cosmopolitan, Maxim and Opera’s O magazine. It covered everything Dear Jan, Trendy fashion, to top news related stories to sex and sports. Tantra paid nicely, she was able to work from home which for Scarlet was a good thing, she hated the office life, being cooped up like a caged bird, which was never her thing, perhaps she thought was the reason she wasn’t married yet like most of her friends.
Scarlet never saw herself the happy homemaker, wife or mother, it wasn’t that she didn’t want the whole white picket fence deal; she just didn’t see where it fit into her life at the present time or in the near future, plus in order for that to happen she’d need to have a husband or at least a steady boyfriend, and she had neither.
He last male companion of three years was a man named Councilman David Galloway. Scarlet thought he was the ‘one’, but deep in her gut she knew he was too good to be true and she was right. Three weeks before being gunned down while leaving an upscale restaurant with his young personal assistant and fuck toy, he made the papers all over America with the Union scandal, taking bribes from business associates, dealings with the mafia and sex with escorts he picked up in travels.
Scarlet broke it off and moved into her spacious loft apartment, and then three weeks later he was killed. She felt no sorrow for him; she shrugged her shoulders and moved on with her life. She filled the void with story after story till the point where nothing caught her attention anymore, nothing gave her that excitement, she hit a rut, she needed a story that grabbed her and made her want to pursue it, that gave her that drive once again.
She stood, her hand moved down along the silk black night gown smoothing it, she loved the feel of cool silk under her dainty fingertips. She cocked her head and watched out the window the sky was slightly clouded as she stepped behind the telescope and looked through the eye moving it slightly to the right looking up at the winter’s night sky.
There was nothing much to see with the cloudy night, she turned the scope to the far left and as she did she caught a view across the way to another building. Scarlet was far from a peeping Tom, or what ever a female was called, but she couldn’t resist looking through the window, the curtains were pulled to the sides allowing anyone to view inside.
She had never noticed the woman across the way before, though there was a moving van a few weeks back parked before that particular building. She watched as she moved through her apartment, from one window to the next, she had company but wasn’t able to tell if they were male or female.
Just as she was ready to zoom in the phone rang, Scarlet sighed and grabbed it, as she stood there watching across the way through the window into the apartment. Her head tilted as she watched, who ever she was Scarlet thought she was a beautiful woman as she turned and stood before the window, causing Scarlet to quickly step to the side so she wasn’t seen watching her. She hung the phone up and peeked around the curtain and sighed softly as the woman and her partner we’re gone.
