The past few months had not been a very pleasant time for Derrick. After graduating from college several once-promising aspects of his life had taken a turn for the worse. His girlfriend broke up with him two months ago on the basis that she “needed to explore new aspects of life.” The job that he’d lined up with a video editing company had fallen through because of the economy, and now he had a crummy job moving furniture just to pay the rent. His parents refused to help, wanting him to learn how to live on his own. He understood, and it was probably for the best. But still, things weren’t easy. He was getting by, but he hadn’t been in the best of moods.
His apartment building was in a rundown part of Chicago, and even though crime wasn’t a huge issue, the look of the surrounding area wasn’t a huge confidence booster. This wasn’t exactly where he saw himself at a few years ago. All of this was running through his mind as he relaxed in his seat on the bus. Rain was pouring down outside and his stop was coming up soon. The grey and gloomy weather outside probably reflected his mood pretty accurately. His lower back ached from the hard day at work and he wanted to relax and take a nap.
Derrick pulled the hood on his sweatshirt up and over his head as the bus came to a stop. The doors opened up and he stepped outside, jogging towards his apartment building as the rain pelted him from above. He ran up to his door and unlocked it with the key to get inside his apartment. He closed the door behind him and sighed, his body falling back against the metal door. He pulled the hoodie off and tossed it onto the arm of the sofa just as he plopped down onto the cushion. Derrick relaxed against the back of the couch and closed his eyes, listening to the sound of the rain falling outside. He was exhausted, and after a few moments he began to pass out…
An hour or so passed before Derrick was awoken by a strange sound. He opened his eyes and focused his attention on the noise. After a moment he realized that it was coming from right outside his front door and it was mewling. It sounded like a cat. Rain was still coming down outside and obviously the animal was upset and trying to seek shelter. Derrick sighed and rolled his eyes, slowly coming to his feet and moving to his door. He looked out the peephole and could vaguely make out the image of the animal pacing outside his door. It was still crying and mewling, and he was getting a little annoyed by the sounds. He opened the door with the intention of getting the cat to leave.
As the door opened the cat clearly jumped and looked up at him, startled by his sudden appearance. “Come on…stop the-..“ But before Derrick couldn’t finish the sentence, the cat quickly darted past him and into his apartment. He quickly turned around, hoping to spot the animal and put it back outside. But he couldn’t find it and it had obviously ran to hide in one of the other rooms. Derrick sighed again and shook his head. “Son of a bitch….” Derrick closed the door and began searching for the cat.
