Cupping Options

Doing a search today I discovered that there are at least three cupping options.

Fire

Suction with a pump, often with plastic cups.

and

Magnet aided?

So, for those of you who have any experiences with any of this, please share. I'd like to try fire cupping more than the other two but how do they compare?

Thanks!

You know, it's funny you mention this, Moon and I were in a Korean shopping center near us (they have the most AMAZING food) and we stopped by a apothecary shop there asking about if they had a cupping set. Sadly they didn't carry them. I guess they really depend on whether you have a crippling fear of fire. I've tried suction and fire, never heard about magnetic aided, and really enjoyed fire cupping a lot more than suction. I think maybe it was more intimate for me. Make sure you're careful when you do it to not heat the glass, you could accidentally burn if someone is still not familiar with it.

Friends of mine have a suction cupping kit. It's less expensive than fire, and I hear similar, though not the same. Never heard of magnets. Sorry I can't be more helpful!

That's for the posts!

I've seen fire cupping done. That's really what I'm interested in most. I was just curious about the other stuff. It looks to be on the up surge as far as kits being available.

I used to do suction cupping as a kid all the time. Tho nothing so safisticated.

I'm really curious about the magnets tho. That sounds neat.

Less expensive than fire? Aroo?

My fire cupping kit consists of a few shot glasses, a couple of homemade fire-sticks, isopropyl alcohol, and a candle. (plus necessary safety implements) That's pretty darned cheap.

(Thanks to Evil Geoff for instruction on how to do, what to get, and how to make the fire-sticks. EG rocks)

Huh. I've never tried either myself, but I thought that's what friends of mine had said in passing. Perhaps they aren't DIY-ers, I dunno.

I've only ever done fire cupping, though I've seen the suction pump types used. Seems rather "mechanical" to me, but then I'm a "hands-on" kinda guy. ;) I like the connection between the person applying the fire to the cups and the cups to the person better than the idea of just slipping something onto a body part and pushing a button.

Never heard of the magnetic option. Just trying to visualize a way that might work has twisted my mind.

Shot glasses? Hmm. I like the variation in sizes of my cups, from about shot glass size (or a little larger) to about four times as large. See pic below. I have two sets like the one shown (you do NOT want to know how much work I went through to dig them out of the very back/bottom of my closet, just so I could take a pic and post it!!!), and definitely wouldn't mind have two more. Unlike the old TV show title, "Eight is not enough." I included a shot glass for comparison purposes.

I've been cupped many times for purely non-sex-related reasons, in Chinese clinics. Leaves the most astonishing bruises!

They've always done it to me with cups as in the above post, plus the simple tool that we know as a disposable cigarette lighter ;)

Thank you so much.

I figure the shot glass was easier to dig out, eh? :D

I would like an actual cupping set. The shot glasses are an excellent way to get into cupping though, and significantly more available.

I love the idea of having an actual cupping set but I also like the versatility of using what we already have.

Did you find it useful to your health? What were you working on and where were the cups applied?

Heh, I don't think I've ever actually used any of the shot glasses we have for drinking. Makes me happy to think that I finally have a use for them.

Yes, I do. I've always had a three-stage session: 40 mins of acupuncture; half an hour of Tui Nah massage; and then finishing with cupping for a few minutes.

It's treatment for deep-seated neck-and-shoulder pain down one side of me. The pain is chronic and I've had it for about 6 years, but the Chinese therapy makes it soooooooooooo much easier to live with - I get it whenever I can afford to pay for it.

The cups were put around my spine and along near my shoulder blade.

That sounds great! I sometimes have neck and shoulder pain too, not lately though.

I've often been curious about this modality. Not just about how the cups are applied (the demonstration I saw used flash paper), but about how it benefits the person; what does it do to the muscles or is it more about just drawing out toxins?

I've never asked how they understand it to work. I just know it helps so very much with the pain. (Though who knows whether all three aspects of the treatment help, or, say, just one aspect of it?)

My chronic pain was broken down with liberal consumption of fish oil (them Omega 3's are crazy good for you), which I still take when I can afford it.

Yeah, I swallow fish oil capsules like it's going out of fashion lol. I get ones that are pure EPA.

I've heard that before about fish oil but I have a real issue about fish consumption. I'm a veggie. I got a supplement then read the ingredients after I got home and found fish oil in it. I gave it to my mom. Hopefully she used it.

I'm glad you've found such relief with it though! That's great!

I've only been to an accupuncturist once, and would love to go again if i could find a good one that is also covered by my insurance (which is currently lapsed for the month).

I won't attempt to compare my chronic pain to anyone else's, but it's helped me so much that I evangelically tout it's usefullness in any pain management regime, and my advice has helped several friends and family as well.

In my opinion everyone should be taking Omega 3 suppliments, especially anyone that wants to have a good pain tolerance threshhold (really; I'm supprised I don't rabidly howl it's praises here more often)

also, Captain's wench; being dyslexic i had to read "safisticated" 6 times before I figured out that you were mispelling sophisticated, rather than some intentional manglement like satisfactified. It was only by context that my sanity was spared the syntax error and consequent blue dream of death.

or something like that.

I've often been confused by this concept. I know a ton of vegetarians who eat plenty of seafood to supplement their diets and a few who don't. Does eating seafood make them vegetarian light? Or is it more of a personal preference thing? Moon is one of the ones who eat seafood but she's a vegetarian for health reasons and not ethical ones...... I on the other hand eat raw meat so I guess I really don't have a point to understand it from.

There are quite a few different "kinds" of vegetarians. Some eat fish, some do not. Some don't eat dairy products. Some do. Below is a good link about some of the differences.

http://vegetarian.about.com/od/vegetarianvegan101/tp/TypesofVeg.htm

I was raised to be a Lacto-ovo vegetarian, among other things. When I was allowed to view the entire world and make up my own mind I threw most of what I was raised to be out. I just saw no reason to change and quite a few reasons to remain that way.

Personally, I'm open to people eating whatever they want. I got married to two meat eaters or really, omnivores. I've raised my kids with both meat and non meat proteins. It was never my intention to make them go veggie.

I do know quite a few vegetarians that don't consider people who eat fish to be vegetarian at all. I also know some vegans that think I'm quite horrible for using dairy. I am not judgmental about any of that.

In fact, I learned around 6th grade to be in the closet on this whole aspect of myself if I wanted people to give me a chance. People need to get to know you before they find such a thing out. I have soooo many closets . . . these days being veggie isn't as odd as it was back in 6th grade however. Thank goodness!

FLAX SEED OIL!!!
(and read the ingredients first of course)

my wife has chlorestorol problems and can't take fish oil, so I managed to find some molecularly distilled Omega 3 suppliments which work just fing for her, though I think those are still made using fish oil.

I'm confused.

You're confused? Are we using fish oils or flax seed oil to lube up our cups now? And must the cups have been molded only under a fire that doesn't use any animal sources to provide heat? What about the plastic cupping sets, and the ones that use vacuum pumps? And why didn't anyone ever explain the magnetic option that was mentioned in the OP?

Check into Udo's Blend. It is a broad spectrum plant based EFA blend of oils that I believe is veg-friendly.
