Waylander stalked through the forest, double crossbow loaded with black bolts. He knew what they wanted from him. He knew what he had done. It had not been a very good moment. He had no choice now. He knew what tehy would want him to do. Now that the king was dead, they would be on their way, there was no hope for the Drenai. It was his fault as well, he had killed the king.

He could hear the soldiers walking through the forest. He also heard someone else. The soldiers quickly spotted that person. She had no chance. By the time he reached them he saw her stripped down and the soldiers preparing to have a good time with their catch. They would not get that good time. In moments they both seemed to have black bolts grow from their foreheads. They then fell to the ground, both dead instantly. Waylander emerged from the woods and went over to the girl.

((To anyone who reads this and knows of the Waylander books, I know this is not the way the book starts, but I don't care. This is my variation of the story and there is only Waylander and Danyal, no Dardallion or any of the others. Please do not complain.))

Danyal shrieked, "Let me go, let me go!!" She cried as they ripped her already tattered dress. She tried to cover her body with her hands but it didn't seem to be doing any good because they were still giving her leerful looks. "If you do not wish to let me go then..."

"Then what, love? You'll give us one of yer girly slaps?" one of the soldiers said with a smrik.

Danyal's eyes narrowed at the soldier but that didn't seem to do any good either.

"I wanna have a go at her first." one of the soldiers said

"No, I will." the first one who seemed to be the more dominant one said.

"HELP!!!!" Danyal screamed.

As the soldiers argued Waylander grinned. This was way too easy. They were not paying attention to anything other than that girl. As she screamed for help he raised his menacing double crossbow. It was very well known throughout the land that only Waylander hand the double crossbow with the black bolts. Black bolts like the ones seeming to grow from the foreheads of both soldiers as they fell to the ground in lifeless heaps. He emerged from the forest and approached the girl on the ground. He first removed his bolts from the heads of the soldiers, cleaned them off, and put them back in his quiver before finally looking at the girl with cold, uncaring eyes. "It looks like you are ok. Do you have more clothes? If not, you can probably get some at the village nearby."

Whoosh!!!!

She heard the sound of arrows, not just...any arrows...his arrows, Waylander. Everyone knew who Waylander was and his signature cross bows. She had to keep from puking as he pulled the arrows out of the soldiers head. She noted the cold uncaring look in his eyes.

Danyal frowned at his look but said nothing about it. "No, actually I do not and that kind sir was the only dress I had." She scoffed out the word kind as though she were trying to hint to him of his...rudeness. She stood up and brushed the dirt off her legs, before covering at the very least her chest with her arms.

He looked at her, not even caring that she was naked. Sure, she was a beautiful woman, but that did not matter. She did not seem happy about the dress. It had not been his fault she had been attacked. She could at least show some gratitude. She was just being rude to him. She covered her chest with her arm and he simply looked at her face. "I suggest you take some money from those two men. they won't need their purses any longer. You should be able to buy yourself a few sets of clothes. I also suggest you learn how to defend yourself. Otherwise you will just have this problem again, and next time I won't be there to help you." As he spoke he started to unstring the double crossbow. He cleaned it absentmindedly, making sure it stayed in perfect condition.

How could he speak to her with absolutely no concern? It was as though she hadn't been almost raped. "I...suppose you are right.." she mumbled, before turning to grab the men's purse of change. Then she turned back to Waylander.

"And where would you suggest I find someone willing to teach a woman how to fight?" She said, cynically.

Waylander looked at her as he finished cleaning his double crossbow. He put it back together, but left it unstringed. He watched her pick up the purses of the dead men and nodded. There was no need to let that money go to waste. Bandits would just take it anyway, and she needed it more.

She asked where she should find someone to teach her to fight sicne she was a woman, he thought for a minute. He looekd at her carefully. "Well, if you can keep up with me, when we stop in the evenings I could teach you, but if you can't keep up, I have no problem with leaving you behind. Just be warned, I live a dangerous life. If you come with me, you should be aware of the danger."

Danyal's eyes narrowed again at his words. "I can keep up! I have no problem keeping up and danger? HA! I was nearly raped and you're asking me if I can handle danger. Right, because that makes a whole lot of sense." She said sarcastically.

"Hm...now, where to get some clothing." She muttered to herself, more than to Waylander because her being naked obviously didn't matter to him.

Waylander rolled his eyes and sighed as she tried to convince him she would be fine following him. She would have to prove that. She spoke to herself about clothes and he turned away. "Just take one of their cloaks until you get somewhere that you can buy your own clothes. Now, hurry up, I want to get out of here. Someone will be looking for those soldiers." As he spoke he already started to move down the path, at a slow pace to start, giving her a small chance to keep up. He would speed up in a few minutes.

Danyal muttered to herself, not really too keen on wearing a dead man's cloak but then again, not too keen on walking around naked with a guy she'd known for only a few minutes. She sighed and quickly discloaked the soldier and hurriedly she followed behind him. "So, wheres our next stop?" Danyal asked, ignoring the grumbling of her stomach.

He continued walking along, gradually speeding up to his normal pace. The woman following him asked where their next stop was. He sighed. He wondered if she would be so talkative all the time. He glanced back at her for a moment. "We stop when night falls. Luckily for you, there is a town near where I intend to get to by tonight. You can run in and buy some clothes, but I am not going in with you. Rumors travel fast, and the latest one is that I killed the king. Now hurry up or you will end up left behind. I am not going to stay slow for you much longer."

Danyal's eyes narrowed at Waylander again, but she didn't say anything. It was useless to do so. She shook her head, happy that the town they were going to would have clothes she could barter for, not that it really mattered because Waylander didn't seem to care whether she was dressed or not. Maybe he was eunic or something. That would be the only logical explanation for him not reacting like any other man would.

Yes, he was eunic. She decided, trying to hide the amused smirk on her face.

Waylander glanced back at the woman. She seemed to be keeping up fairly well. She might actually make a good student for him. It was time to test if she really wanted to follow him. If she was able to keep up and actually tried to, he would accept her and teach her to fight. He would also wonder why she wanted to though, not many people wanted anything to do with him. Being around him was dangerous.

Dayal still followed behind Waylander closely, not saying anything. She was still entertaining herself with her private joke about him being eunic. Well, maybe it wasn't a joke. Maybe he was eunic! It would definitely explain alot, though she hadn't heard any rumors of such tales, unless...no one knew. She snickered to herself. Wouldn't that be interesting?

He picked up the pace to his normal walking pace. It was fairly quick. Even with the speed, he made no noise. It had taken years for him to get that good at stealth. He also listened carefully for any noises nearby. He could hear the girl behind him keeping up fairly well. It seemed that unless she got tired and quit, he would be teaching her to fight and would have a companion.

Grrr, why was he speeding up? Was he seriously trying to lose her? Maybe he thought that if she fell behind, he wouldn't have to train her. Like hell, he won't she thought angrily as she kept at good speed with his. He would train her if that was the last thing he ever did. She'd make sure of it!

Over the next couple of hours it started getting darker, but Waylander did not slow down at all. When he finally did stop, he was just outside a town. It was getting quite late and he set up his camp. It was a very simply camp, a small fire and some thin blankets. He pulled some food from his pack and then stashed everything else in a tree. He then sat and ate the small ammount of bread he'd got out. He would hunt and cook something small soon. He did not even look to see what Danyal did, he just listened to hear if she stayed near or went to town.

"Yeah, thanks for offering." Danyal muttered as she watched the stupid eunic eat his bread, not even checking to see if she was alright! She frowned, being the polite girl that she was, Danyal stated, "I'm going to town to get some clothes."

Not that it really matters.

She grabbed the coin purse and walked into town to search for something to wear, while trying desperately to cover her body. After all, not everyone was a eunic like Waylander.

Waylander sat, leaning against a tree as he heard the woman speak. It seemed she was annoyed at him, yet she still stuck around. He really had to wonder why. No one ever wanted to be near him, he was dangerous. Danger always found him.

After she left, he finished eating and fed the fire. He listened carefully and smiled when he heard a rabbit in the bushes nearby. A moment later there was a knife flying through the air. another moment later there was a rabbit laying dead with a knife lodged in it. Waylander got up and walked over to it, picking it up and then quickly skinning it. As he did, he heard another rabbit. He killed that one as well, skinned it, then found a stick and vines to use. He tied the rabbits to the stick with the vines and then went to his fire where he started to cook the meat.

Danyal had found some nice little booths where they sold some clothing. She didn't want to spend all of her money, plus she figured that the more money she had, the more food she could buy because it didn't seem Waylander was going to be sharing his food....not that he had much to share anyways.

She bought a brown dress. It wasn't the prettiest dress in the world and made her feel like she was wearing a tent but, if she were to be training she didn't exactly need a dress that was a show stopper. She bought some bread along with fish then returned to the camp that Waylander had made.

By the time the woman returned, the rabbit was cooked. Waylander took one off and started to eat it. The other he left for her. He sat back against his tree and ate for a while before doing anything else. The woman had some clothes and it seemed she had a few other things as well.

After eating a little he glanced over at her and spoke. "You know, I can read people fairly well. You seemed a little dissapointed that I did not drool over your naked body. I am not sure why you felt that way, it seems a little strange to want a stranger to be staring at your body. I did not because it was not the time for that sort of thing. There is a time and place for everything, and part of successfully defending yourself is knowing that."

Danyal stared at the cooked rabbit and blushed. So there was a man underneath all that hostility. She gave Waylander a smile of thanks before sitting down. Just as she was about to actually say thank you, he said something that retracted her thank you.

Her eyes narrowed at him. "I nearly got raped and you think I wanted you to drool over my body? I suggest you get over yourself." She said as calmly as possibly. "I did not want you to do anything. I hardly know you, what you assumed you read was my confusion that you did not do such perverted things. That is all."

And with her luck, all it would ever be. She continued to eat the rabbit silently, not looking up at Waylander again.

Waylander sighed. He finished eating and tossed the remains into the woods behind him. "You know, I did not have to save you. I could have let you get raped. Also, I did not have to offer to teach you to fight. I could have left you naked in the road. I did not have to cook a second rabbit for you. The least you could do is show some civility. Even if what I assumed was wrong, you made wrong assumptions as well. First, you assumed that all men are the same and would stare at a naked woman and have perverted thoughts. Also, since I did not do that, you assumed there is something wrong with me. Now, will you try to be civil, or should I just leave you here? I have no problem with doing that."

Danyal clenched her fists, closing her eyes, trying to block out his voice. It wasn't working. "How do you know I assumed something was wrong about you?" She asked, "Can you read minds now? I said I was confused...not tha tI thought something was wrong about you. As I said before, I hardly know you to be making such rash judgements."

She paused and took a deep breath, "Besides, even if I had thought so...which i did not, what would be the best way to ask such things that are none of my business in the first place? Hm, please do tell. "

Another pause, with a long intake of breath. "And if you feel that training me would hinder you from...whatever, then please do leave. I'm certain that I can go find someone else to train me." It was lie. She probably couldn't because she was a woman, but...it was much better than being snapped at by some...some loner!

Waylander rooled his eyes and sighed again. She really was a stubborn woman. He wondered if he had made a good decision. He looked over at her carefully, taking in every detail. He was good at reading people and he could tell she wasn't going anywhere.

He took a deep breath to relax himself. "I told you, I can read people, and the way you looked at me told me you thought there was something wrong with me. As for how to ask that sort of thing, you just ask. It is not that hard. As for training you, it will be no hinderance. In fact, having someone else with me that will be able to help will be a good thing. However, I warn you. What I have to do is very dangerous and will be a long journey. So I hope you are prepared."
