Toss out an unprovoked racial slur? You get one chance to apologize and then you're gone. Banned AND deleted. There won't be any need for someone to retaliate.
Come back again? Banned. By subnet.
Fat basher trolls? Gone. Deleted. As if they never existed.
Threaten someone over an internet argument? Banned.
Male bashers? Hasta la vista, baby.
Create alts? Banned.

I think such a board would lack zest.

Furthermore, I think YOU would be bored sick on such a board.

What's needed is a way to eliminate bandwidth-hogging alts and trolls.

I've often wondered about this. Perhaps some sort of quorum of senior posters; elected by the masses for their qualities of sobriety and reason, could administer justice.

In some ways, the internet is just a normal community writ large.

On the other hand, the anonymity here causes problems.

There are other forums that don't allow free speech already, you're free to move on to them whenever you wish.

But Hogan is right, you wouldn't last 10 minutes under those rules. Good thing that your rules apply to everyone BUT you right?

I post and discuss stories on other websites. I put meaningful intellectual equity there and spit here.

I blog politics here, hell I'm almost completely uninterested in anyone's opinion from this place. Especially after so many people who challenged me were so thoroughly discredited by this subprime mess, to say the least.
 
There's a delicate balance on the GB. Last fall, that balance was destroyed due to a perfect storm of alts and trolls on one hand and obsessive election posters on the other.

The ecosystem of the GB was wiped out and many, if not most, of the best posters fled to other boards.

I've been here seven odd years and I've never seen such a downturn in the board, despite all its cycles.

"Trolls" don't create excitement....smart, witty posters who hate each other take care of that.

I contend that the GB is the victim of the very factors that make it great; at its best. A small group of obsessive non-competitors here; who have nothing to offer but their maniacal persistence,have managed to render the board toxic.

I started out on the BDSM board, but I moved to the GB because it is far more vital and exciting. When the GB becomes as staid as the BDSM board, then it will have lost all reason for its existence.

Everytime I think I've broken down this place to the essentials in a particular thread, someone comes along and does it ten times better. Complete with chronology analysis, to boot.

I'm not in favor of banning people for what they say like LT, but I think a couple of policy changes would have helped matters, the easiest one being that any posting of personal information or making of threats = the end of your time on the GB.

I'm not sure how you ban alts and trolls, since there's a slippery slope argument to be made. But a big part of the problem here isn't that there are many more trolls than before; it's that the board is so much less busy now that the idiots really stand out more.

I'm a firm believer in the idea that moderating this board will kill it.

It's the culture of the board and the quality of the posters that make it worthwhile.

Contention, even violent hatred are good things.

If someone uses racial slurs, then ostracize them. Understand that you will never be able to force everyone to think the same way...and that's a good thing.

For all their redneck ways, Ishmael and Amatrixca did not kill this board. I believe that they add value.

Anyhow, it's up to us to stay with the board or bail out. It is what you make of it.

We've always had trolls. I'm not convinced we really do have any more trolls than we had a year ago at this time. The difference now is that there are alternatives for non-trolls to post at. This is the first time in Lit's history that there's ever been a noticeable decline in posting on the GB.

You're on the right track (if your serious about making a site, I could help you with these rules), but you don't have it good enough for people to actually follow your rules
First of all, depending on the severity of the rule that is broken, you're membership will be suspended and flagged rather than have an immediate ban (all suspensions will have warnings and a ban must have a notice).

You will get a warning for:
1: Negative comments about race, religion, upbringing, lifestyle, or sexual preference.
2: Posts that include the "N" word (the post will be edited or the entire thread deleted if the word appears in the topic).
3: Spamming the board with site links in multiple posts or one word bumps.
You will be banned for:
1: Harsh accusations or threats that would ruin reputation in occupation, disturb social or private life, or create legal situations for family.
2: Posting or promoting access to illegal activity such as Torrents and Warez (Youtube and related sites not included).
3: Encouraging the sale of products (just saying "The book's a good read, you should get it," is not included in this rule).

All IPs are recorded to enforce these rules, however only the administrators may see them (moderators may give warnings and flag posters).
If you see a rule being broken, you may report it to the moderator who will take the appropriate action (mods must request take down beforehand and consider argument).

The other boards are parasitical on the GB and will stand or fall depending on their ability to bring fresh blood from here.

I think we'd be better off if everyone came back and made a stand against the trolls.

There's a perfect analogy with terrorism....a small group of powerless and obsessed people leverage their persistence and will-to-win into control over a large group of innocent citizens.
 
Does this mean le jerk is going to leave and make his own forum?

And therein is the problem...a good chunk of heads here — supposedly sensible heads at that — keep seeing the trolls as temporary amusement that don't hurt nobody at the end of the day and from that proxy, enable their juvenile behavior to continue.

There's nothing you can do about that, really, but hope that the person will eventually realize that they'd get a better experience out of their day or night talking to a brick wall with mold growing on it.

In many ways, the fact that Lit's GB was splintered into other sites might help this situation rather than hurt it because there isn't enough of the common audience for the trolls to play and feed off of. I might be seeing this in an optimistic light only because the trolls here are most likely no more than three specific people and I know two of them and their alts for definite fact. And those two need people to survive and thrive, which is why they tried to "break into" Lint, to get their meat back on their dry gnaw-bone.
