Deep space exploration... it was a fascination for the Human race on Earth for as long as they can remember. From the first landing on the moon, to the first artificial biosphere on Mars, it has been something that humans could dream of. It had taken many years, even a century for humans to make space ships that could even try to get out of the Solar system but in the year 2130, the breakthrough was finally created. The Hyperspace Engine Block was the catalyst that send human exploration into the next phase... the phase of reaching out to the stars.
The first attempts of reaching out with the stars did have some drawbacks. Sometimes, the large starships that could hold this hyperspace block would break apart in mid-flight, just as they reach the light barrier and that had caused humans to rethink their designs in the hyperspace block.
In 2145, the major breakthrough finally happened. It reasoned to believe that the Hyperspace block could only be capable of being built on a small star pilot ship... only being able to hold one person in the ship... but it had yet to be fully tested.
The Government of the United Continents of the World needed volunteers to test out this new break through... and what better volunteers were there than space pilots who seemed to get into trouble in one form or another. That seemed to be where Lt. Katrina McCabe would fit in very well.
Trina was the type of officer in the Space Corps who seemed to question authority a little too much and it seemed that the Corps deemed her to be reckless and too much of a risk taker... in other words, the perfect candidate for what was called the "Hyper Project".
She was not at all happy about being the very first test subject selected. Her orders came about in a Top Secret text message... only able to be read by Trina and those in the know about the Hyper Project. She could not believe her eyes when she had read her orders... over and over again:
"To: Lt. Katrina McCabe, Fighter Pilot, 2nd Flight Squadron, 4th Fighter Brigade
From: BGen Arlen Hawthrone, Cmdr, Special Projects, UCOW Space Corps
Orders # 80-347A
Lt.McCabe (For Your Eyes Only),
You are hereby ordered to be transferred to NoMAD Base In Alaska to participate in the Hyper Project. You are to proceed immediately without question. Your commanding Officers are aware that you are to be transferred but do not know where you are to be transferred to. DO NOT tell anyone where you are going. We expect you here at 0600 tomorrow morning. Do not be late or you WILL be sent to the Brig.
Sincerly,
BGen Arlen Hawthorne
Commanding"
Deep into small sighs, Trina sat on her bed still reading the orders over and over again. it was not like she had to tell anyone where she was going anyways... since she did not have many friends that she could trust. Sure there were some of the male officers that she had talked to very often but she had tended to keep their conversations military related. She already knew that she was not about to get into any relationship with any of them.... and the thing was, she could not tell them the real reason why.
Many times, Trina had given the men some lies about why she could not come to dinner after duty... lies like she was not feeling good, had a lot of work to do or any other lie that she could come up with... but she could not tell them the real reason why she could not go because if she did, she knew that she would get kicked out of the Space Corps and sent to the Brig for... being different. How different was she? Trina just could not say... not to anyone that she could trust. It was a part of her life that she just could not let out... not to anyone at all.
Arriving at NoMAD base, high above the Earth's surface, Trina went through the small briefings of the Calypso, the fighter that was to be used for the latest test run. Her first question to the Captain giving the briefing was, "Sir, Why can't a robot be involved in the test instead of me?"
"Lt. We ran tests with Robots and they all failed. it seems that the Hyperspace Block needs actual body heat to compensate for the cold of space. This special suit that you will wear will send a tube to the outside of the block, keeping the block at the proper functioning temperature while at the same time, keeping your body warm from the cold of the block." The Captain said, not wavering in emotion at all in his explanation.
Trina let out a small humph, thinking to herself That explains it, I am just some guinea pig... just because I did not sleep with a few of my CO's. Once I get back to Earth, I'll teach a few of them about how pissed off I can really be. as she sat back in the chair, hearing the rest of the briefing. It all went by very fast and soon, she could not help but to close her eyes... probably skipping a vital piece of information in the process.
The briefing seemed to take only a couple of hours and soon, she was in the pilot's seat, waiting for the test to start. "Stonehenge to Base. Request clearance to depart." She said over the radio. She had received the code name "Stonehenge" because she had always kept a stone face and was a mystery... almost like Stonehenge itself.
"This is NoMAD Base, you are clear to depart on runway 6, Good Luck Stonehenge." The controller said.
"Thanks base." Trina said though thinking to herself, I'll need it.
The ship went about its normal firing up sequence as the familiar lights surrounded her ship, signaling Trina that it was time to go. As she hit the thrusters, she could feel the G-forces overwhelming her as the ship sped off into the vastness of space. "Oh... oh... godddsss." She said silently to herself, feeling that exhilaration that she totally loved running through her entire body. It was like her whole body was experiencing an involuntary blissful orgasm as she departed out of the hanger... and deep inside, she enjoyed every minute of it.
Finally passing Mars, and the Asteroid Belt, she had made a right turn past Jupiter and started to head out into the test area... setting up her co-ordinates. After punching a few buttons, Trina let out a small sigh, knowing what was next. "Stonehenge to Base. Ready to commence testing of Hyper." She said, waiting for the response.
"Base to Stonehenge, confirmed. set your trajectory co-ordinates to 0,56,23 mark 50. Commence countdown in 15 seconds."
"Acknowledged Base, Countdown started... now." Trina said, saying to herself, "Here goes everything and nothing."
5...4...3...2...1...
The Calypso sped off into Space, faster than anyone living had ever dreamed of... past the speed of light. Trina felt the sudden rush and let out a shout of glee... feeling that the test was a success. As soon as she started to get her bearings, the controls seemed to flow normally now... so far so good.
"Stonehenge to Base. All systems are go. Project Hyper is a success!" Trina said in a small little hint of happiness.
"Excellent Stonehenge. shut down the Hyper Drive in 5 seconds and proceed back to NoMAD base." The controller said.
Trina let out a small word of acknowledgment and tried to shut the Hyperspace Block off.... but there seemed to be a problem... a very big problem indeed. "Stonehenge to Base. Unable to shut down Project Hyper... repeat, unable to shut down Project Hyper. Mayday... Mayday!!"
As Trina let out the Mayday signals, now, she knew that she was truly alone, especially when there seemed to be a giant space hole coming in her direction. "MAYDAY!!! MAYDAY!!! HEEEELLPPPP!!!"
As Trina entered the giant space hole, she had instantly blacked out. Where would she end up... and would she still be alive at the end of her journey... where ever that may be? All Trina could do was hope and pray to the Gods... that where ever she would end up at... that she would be alive and all in one piece.
