The mighty empire of Malacross has stood for centuries, it has weathered plagues, volcanic eruptions, civil wars and assaults by inhuman creatures. But now it stands on the edge of destruction; a combination of crop failures, horrendous blizzards brought on by winters which last months past the normal arrival of spring, and unending assaults by a newly horde of barbarians has shattered the empire. The capital is under siege, tens of thousands lie dead or enslaved to this force.

However all is not lost, the emperor maximillian the 15th has issued a secret decree. He has commissioned the first ever large scale airship built, in order to set up a colony out of reach of the barbarians for his family.

The empire uses a mix of science and magic as the foundation for its creation. So for example there could be golems being used for constructing a building, while next door a steam powered mill is working. I am looking for a reasonably large group of people (4-8 preferable) to travel aboard the airship to create this new colony (as well as help populate it :D ). You can be anything from a baker to a scientist, a guardsman/woman to a magician, all I ask is that you keep your characters skills at a reasonable rate. For example if your a guard, its understandable for you to be skilled in a few weapons, and know how to react in combat. Its not reasonable for you to waltz into a dozen well armed foes and defeat them without a scratch. In addition to this two players (not counting me) will be chosen for a special role that I will inform them of via pm's. You are free to refuse this if you want, just figured it would spice stuff up a bit.

Oh almost forgot, your character can come from any other town you want to come up with, but they will 'start' in Ebonreef once this gets underway.

If you have any questions/comments post here and I will explain them as well as possible. Also I tend to have a rather busy schedule so I will try and do a 'story' update once a week or so. This will help to keep things moving, but players can interact with each other all they want between updates.

(My character, and a sample for what character apps should look like)

Name: Marcus Trelawmane
Age: 24
Profession: Mage (skilled primarily in storm/enchanting magics, with a limited skills in other areas)
Description: (see link) Totally forgot to link an image! http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j262/Taki980/AnimeMaleMage.jpg (I can be sooo damn forgetful sometimes : / )

History: Marcus was raised in the south of the empire, in the town of Silverpine. He is one of several children, and has always felt a close bond with his siblings, even if they annoy him on occasion. He became entranced with magic after seeing a traveling mage pass through the town, who over the course of one week managed to save three kittens from trees, put out a small home fire, and tracked down a lost flock of sheep.

Years later he moved to the port city of Ebonreef, and enrolled in the local magic academy. He graduated a year before the war broke out, (age 20) and was quickly drafted into the military to combat the invaders. For three years he fought to push back the invaders, but in his final year of service one of his legs was impaled by one of the monstrous javelins of the invaders. Months passed as he recuperated at the port town, and eventually he was deemed healthy enough to travel outside, though with a limp that will most likely endure to till his death. Seeking new employment he was drafted into the airship project, and has been working to make it airworthy for the last 6 months. Now though, dark clouds blanket the skies for weeks on end, and there are rumors that the barbarians are pushing ever closer.

looks good smiley the only thing you that needs adjusting is whether your girl uses magic or science to heal, either one works just good for clarity. (Magic would let you heal people easier and with less scaring/bloodloss, but science lets you heal more without wearing yourself out.

excellent, ok got a few more people whispering me about this, but would be nice to get some male players as well to balance this out some.

May I? It's been a while since I've ranged from reality-based to fantasy, but this looks like fun, and you've clearly got a plan. I'll put together a character profile if you give the nod.

Thanks!

Errr ... What are your thoughts on stowaways? Seems to me, since the airship exodus is a government operation, the criminal element would be excluded.

Well normally they wouldn't be allowed on a government vessel, and I don't want to ruin much but it won't be leaving under normal circumstances so stowaways are fine. Just your profession can't be stowaway :p Also there will be one or two updates before everybody gets on board, so don't have your history start up on the ship. Unless your part of the crew thats building it ;P

Orchid was a middle child but the only girl so despite the norms of her village, she remained home and learned the important duties of her kind. Caring for the home and family. Despite the years of hard work she retained her soft curls that encased her face as she diligently worked on another one of Franklin's shirts.

Even the harsh reality of war could not detour her nature to care for others as she began to make large batches of stews and casseroles to feed the hungry that crossed thru her city in flight to find safety in Ebonreef.

Her Father and three elder brothers went to serve, if serve was the correct way of saying to die horrendously at the hands of muraders. Her Mother later became frail from the news of their deaths that she forced herself to decline. Four months later she passed on leaving Orchid in charge of three younger siblings all of them boys with stubborn views on listening to the wiser sister.

There was a loud clanging noise erupting from the watch tower. Orchid rose fearfully, she didn't know where her brothers were. Screams and noises of panic rose outside the door. Orchid grabbed her staff and rushed outdoors, her eyes scanning for the three boys.

"Franklin..... Evan...... Persus" She shouted as people were racing past her to rush to some form of safety. A new fear rose in her heart as she witnessed a close neighbor being run through as one of the barbarians whizzed by on horseback.

Orchid blinked then turned running to the west for the mountainous lands. She felt a sharp pain in her leg as an arrow came piercing into the calf. Orchid stumbled forward into a wood pile and smacked her face into the hard steel of the axe. Blood now coated her face and her attacker believed her dead went on with his blood lust frenzy as snow began to fall from the skies above.

Orchid woke the following day in pain but managed to pull herself off the ground. She scanned over the reminents of her village before breaking down and sobbing pitifully. Most everything was unrecognizable as many buildings were smoldering piles of ash or crumbled heaps of wood and stone.

Orchid pulled herself back to what was once her home, it was now ransacked and filthy as dogs fought over the scraps of food that was still edible. Truth seeped into her veins, she could not stay here alone.

"Perhaps the boys made it to safety.... " Orchid whispered hopefully. "They are in the stores of the mountain.. they must be there."

Orchid gathered what she could of food and water and shoved it in a pack. She felt the need to travel to the mountains and find her brothers. Grabbing the shirt she mended the day before she hobbled out the rear door to discover they were not as lucky as she. Orchid screamed in pain seeing their small bodies but was brought to the realization that she was not safe here anymore and must make her way to Ebonreef.

a very nice character intro landiek, the only thing that should be changed is moving her description out of the history, so people can see it easier.

Beauty! Can't have a functioning society without the rogue element. :D

I'll have my bio up tonight.

ok no rush, with you we will be at 4 players, but I always like to have a few more players since people tend to drop from real life commitments and what have you. I figure I will leave this up about a week or so before I start it up, or if we happen to get 8 players total.

Trevalyan Hotchkiss Bennett
Age: 24
Description: Light brown hair
Green eyes
5’9”
Build: wiry
Trade: Acquirer and cleaner

Bennett entered the world a scion of no family but rather of a business: Madame Rothschilde’s. A house of ill-repute in the wharf district of the Empire’s second largest port city, Dunston, Rothschilde’s was a business stretching back generations. Its lineage and the nature of most of its clientele had made the three generations of Rothschilde women proprietors wealthy and even respected in certain circles of the community.

Trevalyan - “Trev” to his associates, “Val” to those closest - had been born into this world, and, when his mother was murdered by a drunken patron of the house, it was Eglantine Rotheschilde who had adopted him. It was she who had paid for his tutors. It was she who shielded him and taught him the fundamentals of business … and it was she who had initiated him into manhood and (rumor had it) arranged the assassination of the man who had murdered “my dearest Valentina, your poor mother.”

It was from his adoptive mother that Val learned finances, yet this knowledge came second to her greatest teaching: the art of reading people - their bodies, their eyes, their gestures. The arts of deception (and pleasure) he learned from his many “aunts,” and when it came time for him to take a larger role in the business of earnings, Eglantine saw to it that Val was properly apprenticed in the various skills by which he could always (the economic state of the world be damned) earn a living: sleight of hand; the working of locks; silence; stealth; the dagger and rapier. He was an apt pupil, and by age sixteen he was daily bringing into the House more money than all but the ablest of Madame Rothschilde’s stable of women.

Civic chaos had grown too great, however, and with the Emperor’s press gangs daily walking the streets, it was growing more difficult to both earn and avoid a mandatory place in the Imperial Army (or what was said to be left of it). With his adoptive mother’s blessing, Trevalyan has set off for a new opportunity, a world difficult but ripe with possibility … if he could find a way aboard one of those airships.

Looks good hermes, the only thing I should add is that the storyline will be starting in Ebonreef. So if your guy leaves Dunston for ebonreef, probably to escape press gangs. That'd be fine.

No probs. That's built into the last line of the post: "Trevalyan has set off for a new opportunity."

I'll simply open in Ebonreef.

Now if we can pick up two more writers, this thing would be perfect.

Anyone?

Bueller?
Bueller?
Bueller?

Ok, that works, what I get for reading these when I'm brain dead >.<

Anyhow I'll start this up when we get a few more players or on monday, whichever comes first.

I will be out of town tomorrow providing the pass is open
Happy New Year everyone

lol alright, good luck with not getting snowed in :p

Not getting a lot more responses so most likely it will be us four unless somebody shows up at the last minute.

So. That last minute guy.... about him. Can I be him? Would hate to poke my head in where it isn't wanted.

______________
(In case you do. Here's a profile.)

Name: Orin Minea'r
Age: 22
Profession: Sailor
Description: The facial features could be considered 'delicate' or 'boyish' With a thin nose, and high cheekbones. The eyes are a deep blue, and the hair a dirty blonde. A very thin 'helmet-strap' beard runs along the jaw line and chin, forming a goatee patch just under the lip. Standing at only 5'6 Orin isn't very imposing. A scar runs across the bridge of the nose, and a tattoo of a compass can be seen over the collar-bone. Possesing a wiry build, this young man has muscle, but not too much of it. Overall he's far from unattractive, yet, he certainly isn't the best catch out there.

Orin Minea'r leaned against the railing, staring in disbelief at his companion.

"So, let me get this straight....an airship?"

"Yup."

The companion in question was a man by the name of Davin. He seemed rather impassive for someone who just gave the news of their reassignment.

"No, I mean.... a ship that flies?"

Orin blinked several times, not entirely sure what to make of the information.

"Seems to be."

"....and I'm supposed to do what now?"

A breath, and a sigh.

"Stand around and look pretty?"

Davin grinned as he gave the last.

Orin groaned and turned to face the ocean. The port just didn't seem nearly as inviting now that he knew the reasons for stopping the voyage so early.

"Har, har.....what if it stops flying?"

"We fall to our deaths?"

Orin looked abotu to protest, but Davin then leaned forward, tapping the bottom of the message they had recieved. In bright gold letters, it was the signature of the emporer

"Oh, bollocks."

Orin Minea'r is a sailor, nothing more, nothing less. Nobody is entirely sure where he was born, or even his age. By his count, he's twenty-two. He swears that he was born on a merchant ship. Despite this, or maybe because of it, Orin is an accomplished ocean's man. He's served on a ship since before he could talk. He doesn't talk much, so its hard to tell what ships he's served on, but rumor has it that he was a pirate and a slaver for several years. Whatever the case, he joined the crew of the Red Corsair two years ago. One of the finest merchant ships in the service of the empire, she's captained by the famed Aereole. Working with the best, Orin proved himself an able body. A good, honest man, his only weakness seems to be alcohol and "port mistresses" Constantly drunk on duty, he tends to create problems when he's bored. So when the emporer called for volunteers from the navy and merchants, for a "secret mission." Orin's number came up.
