University Of New Hampshire ‘Bias-Free Language’ Guide Deems Word ‘American’ Problema

University Of New Hampshire ‘Bias-Free Language’ Guide Deems Word ‘American’ Problematic

Screen Shot 2015-07-28 at 8.50.00 PM

Do not say anything at all that may be deemed bad by the Left…

Via Campus Reform:

“American,” “illegal alien,” “foreigners,” “mothering,” and “fathering” are just a handful of words deemed “problematic” by the University of New Hampshire’s Bias-Free Language Guide.

According to the university’s website, the guide “is meant to invite inclusive excellence in [the] campus community.”

Terms also considered problematic include: “elders,” “senior citizen,” “overweight,” “speech impediment,” “dumb,” “sexual preference,” “manpower,” “freshmen,” “mailman,” and “chairman,” in addition to many others.

The guide defines words such as “homosexual” as “problematic,” offering “Same Gender Loving” as a more inclusive substitute. Similarly, a lack of gender-neutral bathrooms is, according to the university, “ciscentrism.”

The university defines “ciscentrism” as “[a] pervasive and institutionalized system that places transgender people in the ‘other’ category and treats their needs and identities as less important than those of cisgender people.”

“Ciscentrism,” according to the university, “includes the lack of gender-neutral restrooms, locker rooms, and residences.”

Saying “American” to reference Americans is also problematic. The guide encourages the use of the more inclusive substitutes “U.S. citizen” or “Resident of the U.S.”

As with nearly all of the BB's C-n-P's he finds on wackadoodle sites, they are flat out lies.

Let's go to the horse's mouth:

"While individuals on our campus have every right to express themselves, I want to make it absolutely clear that the views expressed in this guide are NOT the policy of the University of New Hampshire. I am troubled by many things in the language guide, especially the suggestion that the use of the term 'American' is misplaced or offensive," he said. "The only UNH policy on speech is that it is free and unfettered on our campuses. It is ironic that what was probably a well-meaning effort to be 'sensitive' proves offensive to many people, myself included."

...

A university spokeswoman said Huddleston was not aware of the guide until this week. It was created by a "small group of community members," though a report submitted by the President's Commission on the Status of People with Disabilities last year describes it as a "4-commission effort."

But in Dummy-World, it's University policy.

had you actually BOTHERED to read it

the REAL story that I posted is accurate

it WAS posted on UNH website and it is a guideline

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — The president of the University of New Hampshire said Wednesday he is troubled and offended by many parts of a "bias-free language guide" posted on the school's website, particularly a suggestion that using the word "American" is problematic because it fails to recognize South America.

The guide, developed by students and staff in 2013, attracted little attention until this week, when it was featured the conservative news site Campus Reform. Asked about it on Wednesday, university President Mark Huddleston said the guide is not campus policy.

It is ironic that what was probably a well-meaning effort to be 'sensitive' proves offensive to many people, myself included."well meaning? REALLY?

The guide appears as a resource on a UNH website detailing the university's efforts to create an inclusive, diverse and equitable community. It says is meant to serve as a "starting point" to encourage critical thinking about terms commonly used in conversation and writing.

One section warns against the terms "older people, elders, seniors, senior citizens." It suggests "people of advanced age" as preferable, though it notes that some have "reclaimed" the term "old people." Other preferred terms include "person of material wealth" instead of rich, "person who lacks advantages that others have" instead of poor and "people of size" to replace the word overweight.

In another suggestion unlikely to gain traction in New England, the guide suggests "y'all" as a better option than "guys" when referring to a group of people.

State Sen. Jeb Bradley, a Republican from Wolfeboro, said he was outraged by the guide and would remember it when lawmakers next consider how much money to provide to the university.

"Implying the word 'American' is not appropriate to use on campus is un-American to say the least," he said. "Will UNH next propose to change our Live Free or Die motto to Live Free but Upset No-One?"

A university spokeswoman said Huddleston was not aware of the guide until this week. It was created by a "small group of community members," though a report submitted by the President's Commission on the Status of People with Disabilities last year describes it as a "4-commission effort." The college also has a commission on women, people of color and gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues. The leaders of the four groups did not immediately respond to requests for comment Wednesday.

Spokeswoman Erika Mantz said it's not clear to whom the commissions are supposed to report. Those reporting lines are under review, she said

You can yammer on and on as long as you want, but it doesn't change the fact that the guide (not guideline) is not part of the University policy.

And the world isn't coming to an end and the libs aren't going to spank you for saying "American"

The University of New Hampshire is by no means the only educational institution that is attempting to encourage censorious codes of political correctness on campus that completely contradict the notion of universities being bastions of free speech.

Earlier this month we reported on how the University of Wisconsin (Stevens Point) was teaching faculty members that all manner of harmless behaviors and phrases were examples of “racial microaggressions.”

The examples included; Asking someone where they are from or where they were born, telling someone they speak good English, telling someone that you have several black friends, saying that you’re not a racist, and complimenting an Asian person by telling them they are very articulate.

Oy vey... do I need to fact check this one too?

BTW - your first paragraph is a lie, which I've already debunked. Repeating the same lie over and over doesn't make it any less of a lie.

University Asks Students to Pick from Six Genders

JOHNFUND

It’s hard to keep up with the Gods of Political Correctness. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and have been familiar with sexual-diversity issues from an early age. But just when I had mastered the need to respect LGBT rights, I was told the proper acronym was LGBTH. The “H” stood for hermaphrodite, a person born with sexual characteristics of both males and females. Then I learned from the National Gay and Lesbian Journalists Association that the term hermaphrodite was “outdated,” and that Intersex was the preferred term. Now comes word from the University of California at Irvine that students there will be able to choose their gender from six different choices starting this fall. The new form will ask students to pick one gender from six different choices.

Prospective students will be asked to choose between male, female, trans male, trans female, gender queer/gender non-conforming and different identity. CBS Los Angeles spoke to students at UC Irvine about the change . . . Beyond the political or social reasons, some saw the financial reasons too. “A lot of those questions when you’re applying to graduate school or any sort of school are important for financial aid opportunities you can have,” said Joanna Laird to CBS Los Angeles. In a statement, Janet Napolitano, the president of the UC system (and President Obama’s former Secretary of Homeland Security) said: “UC is working hard to ensure our campuses model inclusiveness and understanding. I’m proud of the work we’ve done so far, but it doesn’t stop there. We must continue to look at where we can improve so everyone at UC feels respected and supported.” Now that we’ve gotten the memo, look for many other campuses to fall in line. Until the choice of six genders proves to be too confining or is deemed “outdated” or discriminatory.

As I said, you can’t keep up.

Why do you care????

If someone chastises you for using the wrong term, just do what I do: Tell them to piss off, then get on with your day.

You really need to worry less about what people think of you
