Disappearing story votes?

Periodically, I check-in to check the feedback on my only story here, "Three on One." (Nonconsent/reluctance) The response has been warm, and I am honored. Last time I checked (a couple weeks ago) the story had about 650 votes. But today it only has about 290. I am just wondering what happened, and if any other authors have had that happen. It did not really affect the story's rating, but it was nice to see that so many readers cared enough to leave a vote. None of the feedback was lost, at least as far as I can tell.

And thank you to everyone who has read, voted on, or left feedback for my story. Truly, thank you!

There are periodic 'sweeps' to get rid of duplicate votes (multiple votes from one computer) and troll votes (those who bomb stories with 1 votes). No one but the site owners really knows how the process works.

Welcome to the AH.

Hmmmm, I suspected something like that. Thank you for the info!

(it's strange that people would vote multiple times on my story, but whatever. I guess that it's... flattering?... I don't even know.)

The trolls do anything and everything to keep those stories they deem, in their own inimitably minds, what is not good for them or their ilk. Then there are those writers who will try and keep your story from surpassing their score, blah, blah, blah.

Welcome to the internet. Oh, and welcome to the AH.

There are also fans of your work who may think they're doing you a favor by voting more than once. Duplicate postitive votes get swept, as well. ;)

Evansliliy had a similar proportionof votes disappear on a recent sweep: we cussed and discussed it at length here.

Given the proportion of of votes swept, I suspect a database/server problem that recorded votes mutliple times -- much like inadvertent multiple posts in the forums -- rather than any deliberate fraud is at the root of that particular sweep's massive rejection of votes.

 Cool! Don't think I've ever had a thread quoted before :)

My condolences, lmind. Was it a story posted between January and March 2008 by any chance? Those are the stories that have been swept most vigorously just lately, in order (I think) to establish winners of the monthly contests.

Close... it was posted in April, 2008: http://www.literotica.com/stories/showstory.php?id=362539

Thanks, everyone, for all the info. I hope someday my story can get back to 600+ votes legitimately. :)
