Dragon World: Passions of a Geek Paradise
Dragon World is a large mall in Miami, Florida. It has many stores and shops, arcades, a movie theater, food court, etc. Below is a more detailed look at Dragon World.
_______________________________________________________________________________
The halls are alive with artwork -- paintings, statues, artifacts, ancient weapons, etc. Every piece of art has something to do with dragons, knights, faeries, elves, or anything fantasy related. From the outside, the entire mall looks like a huge castle with dragon gargoyles.
There's Draco's Lounge, a large restaurant and bar. There's a hair salon and a Mixed Martial Arts dojo, and near the front of the parking lot is a Shell Station with gas pumps and a mini-mart. The entire mall also has high speed wireless internet.
There’s Cloud Nine, which has tons of arcade machines, old and new, pinball machines, pool tables, etc. Also popular at the mall is Dragon Depot, a huge store with all kinds of dragon merchandise, including, but not limited to: statues, paintings, figurines, books, swords, armor, D&D and other role playing accessories, comic books, action figures, etc.
Other shops in the mall: GameStop, RadioShack (which also has a Verizon Wireless office), Barnes & Noble, Blockbuster, Little Tokyo (anime/manga), Urban Streetwear (clothes & shoes), etc.
There is the Convention Center, which is a long hall of meeting rooms and whatnot. In this reality, Dragon World is very popular and the home of DragonCon, ComicCon, Anime Expo, and Electronic Entertainment Expo (the old E3, with the booth babes and crazy parties, not the new-yet-retarded E3 Business and Media Summit).
In the center of the mall is the food court, which has many fast food counters facing a large area with tables and chairs: McDonald’s, Burger King, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Subway, KFC, Baskin Robbins, Starbucks, etc.
Dragon World is owned by Jim Drake, who often goes by the name Lord Draco on the Internet, in D&D games, during conventions, etc. He personally owns Draco’s Lounge, Dragon Depot, and Cloud Nine. All the other shops are owned by their respective corporate moguls, but contracted to that location. Jim get’s a percentage of the shops’ revenue.
He’s well over 40, but is a huge geek and a fun guy. He was a young teenager when Star Wars Episode IV first hit theaters (1977), and from there entered total geekhood. Between Atari games and D&D, he barely had time to study during college, and nearly failed on several occasions.
After college, Jim moved from his hometown of Miami to Silicon Valley, where he spent several years freelancing as a software engineer/computer consultant, until his father, Nathan Drake, suffered a heart attack. Nathan had retired a few years back so he could move back to Miami and rekindle his relationship with his estranged wife. He had been a scientist working for NASA, and came to Miami occasionally to visit his sons and their mother.
Nathan and Rose had gotten back together three years before Nathan had his heart attack. Before he died, he told Jim and William, his sons, that he had been working on some ideas for dragon-themed mall, and he wanted them to finish it. He told them to look in his work shop. After the funeral, Jim and Will went to the shop and found all kinds of sketches and designs for what he had envisioned. Jim then moved back to Miami, and began work on Dragon World.
Will stayed for a while, but then returned to his life in New York City. Six months after Nathan died, so did Rose. Between the fortunes Jim and Will earned from their parents, they had plenty of money to build Dragon World. Will only visited to help Jim every few months, and they were both 50% owners.
Dragon World opened on May 1st, 1991. It steadily grew in popularity, yet Jim and Will began to feud. Finally, in 1997, Jim bought the other half of the company, and Will started coming to visit less and less. In the years since he became full owner, Jim has made many improvements and advancements to the building and the interior.
Now, it’s June 2009. Jim owns a huge beach house, a luxury yacht, and several cars.
I will play three characters. One is Jim Drake, of course. He’s the owner and Administrator. The second is Vance Daggart, lead singer and guitarist of the thrash metal band Bloodshed. He’s staying in Miami for the summer to visit his daughter, who lives with her mother. The rest of his band will come down for a concert in August. After that, the band goes on tour. If this game is still going at the end of the summer (in game-time), I will continue to post as Vance while he’s on tour. If he finds that special girl, he’ll move to Miami after the tour.
My third and main char will be Largo Drake, son of Will Drake, brother of Jim. Largo is a huge geek, but his father is too strict and controlling. Will is a lawyer in New York City, where Largo was born, and expects his son to attend Harvard University just as he did. Largo likes the idea of being a lawyer, but secretly wants to be a writer/artist and maybe repair computers on the side. He would never dare anger his father or disobey him, but perhaps if he meets the right girl, she can give him the courage to say no and stay in Miami.
Largo has just recently graduated high school as valedictorian, and obviously, he has been accepted into Harvard. He decided to come work for his uncle for the summer to earn some money to take with him to college, which William actually approved of. The only thing Jim had available for Largo was a janitorial position, mopping the halls, cleaning the bathrooms, wiping off tables and chairs in the food court, etc. Hey, it’s a shitty job, but it’s eight bucks an hour plus two free meals a day at the Lounge.
So, characters can be employees of any of the areas mentioned or a resident of Miami that just loves to come to Dragon World to hang out. There's also the facility maintenance, security, accounting, etc. Placed throughout the halls are doors reading EMPLOYEES ONLY, which lead to the back halls. These back halls lead to the truck loading and unloading area, the employee lounge (which has chairs, tables, couches, a large LCD TV, a kitchenette, etc.) and the stairs leading up to the conference rooms, offices, and the security control station.
The layout of the interior is like a huge cross -- From the south end front doors, a long hall extends to the center, the food court. There are the west and east halls, spawning off the food court and extending out as far as the south hall. The north hall is blocked off with a set of large doors, because beyond this lies the Convention Center. There is no sense in specifying which shops are in which halls, though. We’ll just go with the flow. Also, feel free to make up your own shops for chars to work at, or use existing ones that I forgot to mention here. The place is huge, and I only mentioned a small percentage of the shops and fast food places.
Detailed character bios will be along shortly...
