...how does it make you feel?

I can see a few degrees of reaction here:

"Ha - that's cool. He/she enjoys virtually flirting with him/her `cause he/she thinks he/she's iconoclastic, mean, and virtually 'dangerous'. It's not real infatuation, so it's all good."

"Hmmm - okay, whatever. It's a porn bulletin board. But still, can't they tell he/she's a weenie?"

"They probably have the same sort of attraction to assholes IRL, and a deflated sense of self-esteem. My opinion of them has lowered."

"I don't care - I love porn."

(The reaction I don't think is honest is the "I don't like him/her - I'm actually trolling them"-type response. Save it; you're intrigued at some level.)

the third one. I'm not fussed by affiliations to some assholes, but the racist ones, they can go fuck themselves.

That's sort of my take, too.

But that's about 98% of the most outspoken assholes on here. A little seaching on pretty much every prominent asshole of the Lit GB will net you a string of homophobic / racist comments.

I'm relieved I don't spend enough time on this forum to where I'm driven to ponder the question seriously enough to warrant a discussion.

I'm not very prominent but you won't find any from me.

You're outspoken and, IMHO, wrong a lot of the time re: political issues. But you're not an asshole...and I can't remember ever seeing any notable racist / sexist comments from you.

The worst criticism I could give you is that you're just like me. :D

Racism trumps assholeishness. I just make a mental note of the type of person they must be to ignore the blatant racist nature of their new found internet friend.

I disagree strongly with a lot of what you say on the forum, but I can still respect your opinion.

I assume I only know what a person wants to present of themselves. Which is probably 2% or less of the truth.

Armed with 2% or so of the truth, I feel pretty assured that people offline or privately develop more meaningful relationships (or mutually satisfying sexual relationships) that make my 2% of "real" info irrelevant to them. Or they've not been paying much attention or taking any of this seriously, which is a good thing.

I assume my opinion is pretty meaningless overall. I might still express it. I've known a lot of public "assholes" that were privately pretty amazing people and their assholery was a social defense.

that's not really true. there are a lot of assholes who aren't homophobic or racist. Most people on here think I'm an asshole for example but no way am I either of those things

Or, perhaps, boredom.

This is the worst place for me to visit when I'm bored. I just become angry at everyone not being entertaining enough for me. I come here when I'm in the mood to entertain myself. Probably at someone else's expense.

I can get past the assholery, and have. The racial, homophobic, or sexist assholery is a different matter. For me at least.

I'm here because I have to be at my computer all day long (writing)...

... and I keep a window open to entertain myself while on-break from my work.

mmmm... someone's assholery can be another's joy. Someone I really like a lot was called an asshole the other day by someone I quite liked. I went with the liked a lot one because I thought mr quite liked was being a wanker.

I agree with that. Doesn't make me want to cuddle up with them. And in many cases, has just made me keep my distance entirely after seeing some comment that makes a person look petty and ignorant. But then again that same person might have said something revealing or insightful also, and they balance each other out sometimes.

There are a few exceptions where the person's clearly doing it for humor or irony or whatever, but even then, that's a real razor's edge to walk and the risks outweigh the benefits. But I guess some folks don't come here for the "benefits" category.

I'm going with "my opinion of them is lowered." if they're too dumb to see it, I'm not interested in them.

Yup. My job's online. I'm usually here during business hours and only on really active interesting conversation (private or public) times will I be here otherwise.

In fact usually I'll try to escape as soon as possible. Lit's inextricably related to work for me.
