NaNoWriMo 2008

It's the middle of July, and that means NaNo isn't that far off. It's time to start thinking about a plot for this year's contest.

Already thinking on it. It's actually an idea I'd come up with a couple years ago and abandoned before starting it. Guess it just needed a couple years to age properly.

Nothing like a 50,000 word deadline to keep me typing.

Sometimes good stories need aging like a good cheese.

As long as they don't stink.

So - this is in November, yes?

This year's show is actually in October. I may be able to do it this time out.

Wow - I may actually be doing it this year! Yay!

Usually my performances are mid-November so I'm chock full of rehearsals and exhaustion for most of the month.

But we're doing a Halloween show this time out, a haunted house and other fun things. It'll actually happen the week before Halloween since it's in the middle of the week this year.

I will be done by November! Thank you for starting this thread. I wouldn't have even thought about it otherwise!

How much prep do people generally do for this?

Plot, characters, chapters organized?

Hey cowboy!

Don't think I'll even try this year. Working full time and taking a full courseload. It may just be too much.

Last year I had a page of notes for each character.

I listed all the topics I wanted for chapters.

Thoughts and ideas covered pages.

I think it would depend on how well you know the subject matter you're writing on.

You're welcome.

Last year was my first and I was pretty nervous about it.

As am I.

I won't get this opportunity next year so I must take solid advantage this time out.

My OCD was an issue. I struggled not to go back and fix errors.
Word count was the goal, though. Editing was later.
I informed friends and family ahead of time of the challenge.
They knew not to interrupt me then.
I met the word count of 50k on the 11th day.

I spend a fair amount of time thinking my plot through. Last year I actually wrote a a page or two of notes with ideas for the story. As usual I let my characters grow as I wrote the story.
