"Here you are, Captain," the darkly tanned, muscular sailor said with a grunt as he set the heavy treasure chest on the table. "Me 'n the boys have gone through the haul, and there's enough in the holds now to keep us sittin' pretty for a good long time to come. We set aside the prizes we knew you'd want to keep in here," he said, indicating the chest.
Captain Maya set down the sea charts she'd been looking over and stood, stretching her arms out behind her back and then out to her sides. It'd been hours since they'd sunk the Winterfrost, a merchant ship bound for who cares where now that they had the ship's treasure and cargo safely below in the Sea Vixen's hold, but the afterglow of the battle still sung in Maya's blood. Her deeply tanned skin still tingled against the tight, form-fitting red leather armor she wore. She took off her hat and tossed it onto the charts as well, shaking her head to let her firey red hair cascade down over her shoulders.
"Well done, Voska. Tell the men they've got a double ration of rum tonight for their good work. Now leave me."
Voska saluted, and then was gone, leaving Maya alone in her cabin. She sat down at the table, the gentle roll of the ship under her feet telling her that her earlier orders to change course for home had just been executed.
She opened the chest and began looking through. Voska and the boys had been sailing under her command for a year now, and they did indeed know what she liked. The chest was full of jewelry, knives, gem-studded leather accessories, and pearls. But wait! What was this! Maya's brow furrowed as she withdrew a large golden object. It was only when she'd turned it over that she realized it was an archaic lamp. Old stories about genies fluttered through her memories, and she smiled. The lamp was dented and crusted with dirt, but judging by its heft there was a lot of gold.
She paused for a moment, then shrugged. "What the hell," she said. "You never know!" With that, she grabbed a silk handkerchief and began to clean it up, rubbing furiously to get the grime off its golden sides.
