Don’t know if I ever told you, but you were the first person I “met” on Lit. You invited me into Molly’s thread and made me feel at home. I really appreciated that. You also prolly know more about the “doings” of our family than just about anybody else on Lit. That’s cuz you care and are appreciated for being you.--posthumous message from Safe_Bet. And I still care and I still love her. Rest in the Light, Suzy.

Watch it, bub. I'm one of those damn Yankees.

We saw trains, planes and automobiles--and even road in two out of three. We met some strange characters from Hogwarts School and the princess got to name one of the baby animals at the zoo.

James town, Plymouth, and lots of other places up and down the coast. And then for the next 220 years after it. As far as I know the last of my relatives (including those that graced me with my last name) came over during the Potato Famine and then in 1870 from Germany.

My mother was born and grew to adulthood in Providence RI...she was of Scots/Irish extraction. I've visited the house that she and my aunts and uncles lived in. Her predecessors arrived some time before the American Revolution, since one of my great-great-great-great uncles was a soldier in the Continental Army.

My mother's family is so connected with colonial America I qualify as a Native American. They came over in 1690, one of the ancestors is Israel Putnam. My dad was the first American born of his family. My wife comes down from Niew Amsterdam and Commodore Perry. Funny, somehow in all the gilded pedigree they left out the money.

Dear God....we're cousins.

My mom's a geneologist, and a damn good one...I know more about my family history than most, though I am very happy for folks if they know where their great grand parents were from...that's getting to be damn rare these days.

I'm mostly Irish, Scottish and German with a healthy smattering of English.

That statement does beg a question though, at what stage does one's ethnicity turn into "American"? I keep looking for that on censuses and all of the other BS Paperwork I fill out and it's always lacking...

My father (also Scots/Irish) had an great-great uncle who made his fortune in the gold rush...selling supplies to the miners. The gold came to him. Nothing to show for it today however. My ancestors on Dad's side crossed the border from Canada and set up camp in what is now Indiana. I have a ton of relatives up there...never met a one.
