"Minneapolis-St. Paul is concerned that its taxi service is deteriorating. Citing their religious beliefs, some Muslim taxi drivers from Somalia are refusing to transport customers carrying or suspected of carrying alcohol. It started with one driver a few years ago, but the average number of fare refusals has grown to about three a day, says airport spokesman Patrick Hogan. "Travelers often feel surprised and insulted," he says. "Sometimes, several drivers in a row refuse carriage." Taxi drivers and officials from the airport, taxi companies and the Muslim American Society are discussing how to address the issue."
 
If a cabbie refuses to pick up a balck guy in high crime areas he loses the right to be a cabbie

Why dont these drives lose their rights as well?

Don't be an idiot. Fine them for not picking up alcohol-carrying passengers and they'll cry 'religious discrimination'.

So, vote with your wallet. Keeps the courts out of it and allows people to get on with their lives without having to get into a neverending legal argument. And if they're so intent on practicing Sharia law, tell them to go back home ala what Oz did.

If you're a pussy, yes. If you're a NYer, you tell the taxi captain why you don't want the next cab and he/she directs you to the following one.

It never ceases to amaze me how native citizens take their freedoms for granted. Use that voice that you're so quick to exercise on Lit.

I did notice, and I chalk it up to pseudo-politicians bent on placating the masses so they can have another term. The rule of law is first and foremost. If you want to practice your religion while driving a cab, move back to Somalia.

Well, that's all well and good, but similarly, they are refusing to provide commercial services based on discrimination. It's one thing for them to make such choices in their personal life, but in a public service, I don't think it right.

I don't think THAT would fly.

In America, we have freedom of speach and religion, but we also have protection from discrimination based upon sex, race, and religion.

I suppose I can see that a cab driver should be allowed to refuse service to somebody with open liquor, but if it's closed, like a new bottle of wine in a bag, I would say to refuse such a person service is disriminatory and the cabbie should be fired.

JK... just a friendly word: Don't assume that what Busybody says is true or that his sources are trustworthy. In fact, you can almost always assumed that the facts are at least distorted, if not full-on wrong. He just likes to have something to scream about on a daily basis until his uterus falls out.

How about the sonofabitches just do their job??? Oh right. I forgot in the new pc America we have to cater to everyone's religious beliefs now. Diversity and all that.

If the cab company fires these jerks they get a nice, liberal atty that will scream religious infringement or discrimination. Then the ACLU sticks their big nose into it and all of a sudden cab drivers everywhere are throwing people out because they can smell the alcohol from the breath spray in someone's mouth.

There's no 'public service' here. These aren't government workers. They make money by carrying as many fares as they can within their shift. If they choose to forgo some of those fares, then they forgo some monies.

Hence, 'vote with your wallet'.
