Free Speech Contest Support Thread

Hmm... this close to contest start and Og hasn't started this yet? Oh my!

I'm ready and sure to be a lock for last place this time.

I could use someone who is finished with theirs to edit mine, please. Any volunteers?

I'm not entering, but I'd be glad to edit for you Minx (or for anyone else actually). I have some time on my hands, and since I'm not competing I'll be a fair editor.

I started one but it died from lack of interest.

I have started my first and possibly only entry. Currently it is stuck because I am suffering from the after effects of a head cold and I can't see the screen too well.

Good luck to everyone.

Sniff,

Og

This was the thread:

Next Contest

but I suggest that it should be allowed to fade away...

Ah, I see, dear, darling Og. Between an unusual amount of work and the pc being down I must have missed it. I was looking for the title of "Support Thread". I apologize for overlooking it, forgive me?

My sympathies on the head cold. I am sure you will come through with flying colors just in the nick of time, with breathtaking prose and an interesting take on the subject at hand. I may only submit one myself, but then again, it's such a touchy subject you never know what may spout from my mouth.

Good luck to you, dearest Og, and to everyone else who endeavors to enter the contest.

So I have this thing I could write for it, but I'm just not sure.

Last year, I had a girlfriend for about 6 weeks. I loved her. Wanted to spend many moons with her. She left me in the end, for good reason.

In the middle of all of that, my boss found out I was having a relationship with a woman and fired me. The day after the sweet girl left me, she rehired me.

I had never been discriminated against and still burns.

But I don't know that it counts as censorship so I'm not sure it fits in the contest. What say you?

It certainly wasn't me, lol. It really shouldn't be that hard to do, have you read some of the threads lately? I'm glad mine was written before reading today's news though.

Dar, however you wish to approach it, as long as it fits in the realm of Reviews/ Essays, within the theme.

Well fuck. I just read Laurel's post about the contest and now I have an idea for an essay. I had the best intentions not to participate, too.

Count me in, too, I guess.

Edited to say- no editing after all. Sorry folks! Life's become a bit nuts, and I'll be lucky to make the time to finish my own.

I didn't even notice this new contest... Is it for real? Is this an opportunity to post that story of mine about an 8 year old learning to masturbate on her own?

That's the problem - free speech is conditional not absolute. Even those 'in favour' bow to the great God of Mammon.

Censorship and free speech are both interesting and important issues, particularly in the US at this time. Essays about sex and censorship and free speech are just as important in furthering OUR ability to continue writing, as they are to those like Laurel and Manu, for example, in being able to keep Lit Alive, or even to a coporation like Vivid and Joker et al. On a sex site, I believe that talking censorship and free speech in times like these is even more important.

Unfortunately, I only just now saw this contest via Og's thread, and while I do have many good, but intense theses, there is too much research for me to get involved at the moment, unless I do a satirical piece, which involves enough research on its own. Alas, there are only four days, and my window of freedom for writing is closing in two hours.

I was informed it could be one or the other (censorship or free speech?) and so far I have:

Censorship

Earplugs. Ever heard of them?

I am not sure how far I can get with it.

Good luck to all who write!

I don't see why not. Might fall under self-censorship or the like. You wouldn't have been free to discuss the relationship with your boss, or mention anything about it, therefore you were censored.

Ye Gads. I'm tempted to enter this, very tempted indeed, but as Charley already said, there'd be lots of research involved. I usually avoid research at all costs. BUT, I do need to get back into practice at research and writing essays, so maybe I should give it a go.

Now to decide what angle to take...

Hmmm, I like the "censorship enforced (inadvertantly or not) by peers" idea. Gonna think on it some more.

I am on a roll! I'm loving this, and I didn't realise how much I would.

I've just spent a very enjoyable two hours discussing this with my hubby, and he has some brilliant and fascinating things to say on the subject. You could say this is going to be a joint effort.

(Oh and we've had a bottle of wine - our musings and discussions run much freer with a little lubrication.)

This is a massive subject and I have been typing out bullet points as we've been talking, and I have almost 1,000 words in bullet points alone! My next challenge is to organise all of this into some kind of sturcture and coherent argument. Oh, and my typing's gone to shit tonight. LOL!

I just have to say, thank you Laurel and Manu, for such an inspiring contest.

I now hope I can pull it off.

Take that as you will.

Okie, back to the wine. Oh, and he's just informed me that he's downloaded a film, especially for me: Master's Choice.

What's a girl to do?

I've had a bloody good evening, and a great chat. All stemming from a contest on free speech. Who'da thunk it? This is so

Lou - stopping rambling for the night.

Never mind free speech - now they've got second place, concentrate on getting them through the cup final. From this side of the water it's not easy to help but I could send some pizzas for chucking at Rooney.

Hahaha! I'll do my best to urge the boys on.

On current form, Man U shouldn't present us much of a problem.

Cheers for the pizzas, just the job!

I have to agree with the posters who have made the point that this topic, while diverse and daunting to try and get creative with, is a very important one. Not only for the USA but for countries world wide, and it would be great to read various international perspectives. Initially I thought I might skip it, but I've since had a rethink and after some encouragement from a very good friend I think I may give it a bash. For me it's also going to be an opportunity to write something a little more serious and informative.
