Will California wash away?

Maybe, but it'll probably break off from the mainland in an earthquake first, hopefully.

Warren Zevon says it will right after he pays his bill - considering his recent death, the timing seems ominous:

Desperados Under the Eaves

I was sitting in the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel
I was staring in my empty coffee cup
I was thinking that the gypsy wasn't lyin'
All the salty margaritas in Los Angeles
I'm gonna drink 'em up

And if California slides into the ocean
Like the mystics and statistics say it will
I predict this motel will be standing until I pay my bill

Don't the sun look angry through the trees
Don't the trees look like crucified thieves
Don't you feel like Desperados under the eaves
Heaven help the one who leaves

Still waking up in the mornings with shaking hands
And I'm trying to find a girl who understands me
But except in dreams you're never really free
Don't the sun look angry at me

I was sitting in the Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel
I was listening to the air conditioner hum
It went mmmmmm..

(Look away down Gower Avenue, Look away....)

Well, maybe the next step for "The Republic Of California" is to become an island. :)

The ones that survive the famine and starvation that will ensue if California disappears.

We are the country's largest supplier of food.

You nutcases are all about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

California is also the country's largest consumer of food. It accounts for about 13% of the country's food production ($31B/$239B), and has about 12% of the population and so about 12% of consumption. Net net, most of what California produces feed Californians, though clearly a lot of items go into and out of each state.

In the table below, the first number is aggregate for all states, then the top states are listed in in the order of the labels.

According to this,

http://www.waterplan.water.ca.gov/d...-planning-futurefoodproductionconsumption.pdf

"Thus, the total value of California food production in 2001 was $20.5 billion at farm gate value."

(this one was estimated) "Total California consumption of food commodities totaled $16.8 billion in 2001."

So yeah, you'd take an 18% automatic hit in food production nationwide.

Remember that it took far less of a percentage-wise hit than that to bring down the stock market in 1929 and to cause the oil crisis in the 1970s.

California's share of national food production is only 13% in the 2007 data I posted, but that's not the key point. If California's gone, consumption will also drop by 12%, and the net loss of production vs. consumption will be small single digit percent...no markets will tank.
