So, anyways, back in the day I used to be a fan of comic books. I stopped reading them once I decided that I was more interested in feeling up girls and, as such, I lost touch with the world of funny books.

But there's a comic book shoppe(Their spelling) near my place of work and recently, I've been thinking about going back in there. I figure reading a comic book at work will look a lot less like goofing off then having my nose deep in a thick novel would.

So are there any particularly good books out there? I heard Kevin Smith was writing some, is he any good at writing comics? Back when I was a kid my faves were Fantastic Four and Spawn but I'm probably looking into slightly less stupid stuff now.
 
Try NBM publishing.
They do great graphic novels.

Look for the "Boneyard" series by Richard Moore.

Or hell, even the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers from RipOff Press.
 
beats the shit out of me. i haven't bought comics on aregular basis in years. last time i went into a comic shop it was like entering another world. i barely recognized any of the titles. almost all of the books i read are either dead or they've changed so much they're nothing at all like what i remember.

and now that cerberus is gone i don't even care.
 
I just brought the duckling to her first comic book store on Saturday. We bought Marvel Age Spiderman The Terrible Threat of the Living Brain.

Let me tell you, that was an experience.

I hear ya there.

A few years ago, Marvell decided to "Clean house" and got rid of some of (in my oppinion) their best titles.

They kept the X-titles (for obvious reasons), but hell, for a while there they had even Ironman.

Its no wonder I lost interest too.
 
Depends on your personal taste, I suppose. I like the horror genre so I gravitate towards titles like Hellblazer, Goon, The Walking Dead, and of course anything by Steve Niles or Rob Zombie.
 
I've always been a fan of Archie and Garfield. I dunno, I can relate everything to those two comics.

I've read a bunch of Superman and X-men, but y'know, I prefer the movies.
 
I bought Issues 180-183 of The Incredible Hulk for 5 lunch tickets in 7th grade. If you know marvel then you know what those are worth.

Theres a card and comic shop near me where I am spending my fridays at now. i just recently bought the comic version of The Crow.

Not bad at all. Can't remember which one it was but one of those is "quoted" at 1200 or so.

batman/superman-micheal turner 6 issue run is also good.
 
Top 5 Comics of All Time... a good place to start.

1) Watchmen, Alan Moore
2) Dark Knight Returns, Frank Miller
3) Sandman, Neil Gaiman
4) Transmetropolitan, Warren Ellis
5) Spider-Man: Kraven's Last Hunt, Dematteis (I think)
 
If you are an X-Men or Wolverine fan, I suggest getting both titles in THE END series. The Wolverine one is good and the X-Men one just started, and is good as well.

Batman: Year One and Dark Knight Returns are both beautifully bound in an embossed, black leather binding. Frank Miller set the tone for what I think is the definative Batman.
 
TransMet from Warren Ellis is damn good stuff, excellent artwork and killer stories.

100 Bullets is pretty damn good too.

And who can forget Preacher?
 
Watchmen is the single best superhero comic, like, ever. My brother hates it, but only because he favours Golden Era Superman and despises any attempts to deconstrcuct his favourite genre.

Preacher is cool, but mildly irritating. I just get sick of God-bashing after a while.

Read Spawn. Read V For Vendetta. Read Top 10.

i speak only the truth. i remember reading image comic books. i liked them until i realized it was all just marvel v. 2.0.

and todd macfarlane is an asshole.

watchmen was okay. i think the ending fell completly flat mostly becouse after ten issues of this wildly dramatic "realistic" approach to comic book heroes we were subjected to the most cliche of endings.

still i dont dispute its impact on how comics are written,produced and illustrated.

i sugest trying peter milligans "shade the changing man",grant morrisons run on the "doom patrol" and the first 27 issues of the "authority" before dc decided to censor it. for stand alone stories and mini series look into JLA "Earth~2",Mark Waid and Alex Ross's "Kingdom Come" ,alan moores "Whatever happened to the man of tomorrow" and Rick Veitch's "The Brat Pack".

I havent realy bought any cmics in ages..right now the "hot series to buy isDCs "Identity Crisis". What makes it controversial is the handling of dcs classic silver age characers in a very adult manner as a serial killer is on the loose we learn how the justice league handled a criminal who raped one of its members wives.

For an ongoing series i'd try JSA,X~Statix and the Flash.
