Medjay and movies

I went to see Troy a few weeks ago, in spite of what I'd read in Medjay's thread about it. Turns out he was right on. I didn't want my 3 hours back, but I think maybe 45 minutes would have been nice. I have never liked Homer's version, and so I don't know why I thought I'd like the movie. Should have taken his advice and skipped it.

Went to see Riddick yesterday. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't even half as good as I had hoped it would be. Again, I didn't want the time or the money back, but several times during the movie, I caught my mind wandering to other things, and a movie should have more ability to hold my attention than that. And that type of film should make you wonder if the events might be possible... not make you sit there and think "Riiiiiiight, that could happen."

So, I've decided that from now on, I'm going to let Medjay see movies, post his critique, and then I'll determine if it's a must see, or a must wait for video.

So, medjay, please go see the following and then post. Think of it as saving a poor girl $8.50.

Around the World in 80 Days (because I LOVE Jackie Chan, but I'm not sure about this one)

The Terminal

The Stepford Wives (I've never seen the original, nor have I read the book)

Great idea! Medjay could you also see King Arthur and The Village ? Thanks!

As a Canadian you are saving me $13 which is the price of the movie ticket. I've long ago stopped buying food from the concession stand and bring in my own food (screw them).

Uh oh. . . I'm afraid those three aren't on my "must see" list. But you can rest assured you'll be seeing my opinons on Spiderman, The Bourne Supremacy and Collateral, though.

I love Medjay's movie reviews. I've always said I'd love to see a flick with him and then go for coffee and talk about it. He's just really insightful and even when I don't agree with him I can usually see where he's coming from.

Like Riddick, I agree with his review completely, but I still liked the fight scenes enough not to feel as though I wasted my time.

I'd still like to read the books though. Hubby thinks I would like them.

I'll certainly be seeing The Villiage but not King Arthur. Sorry but Troy has caused me to boycott any and all movies featuring white folks running around in period costumes wielding swords and arrows. Because of this I'll also be sitting out Alexander; even the fact that it's directed by Oliver Stone and features Rosario Dawson isn't enough to get me into that theatre.

I saw trailers for all three yesterday at Riddick. The Bourne Supremacy looks pretty good. I'm not a big fan of Matt Damon, but I liked the original, and this one looks up to the same standards.

I was just talking to a friend today about Collateral. I just don't know if Tom Cruise as hit man is going to be believable. And he looks rediculous with gray hair.

I think I want to see The Village when it's out, and also King Arthur.

I keep waiting for the big blockbuster summer movie, and sadly, I don't think any of the movies that could have been that have realized their potential.

So - predictions from you on what will finally be IT?

Better a sci-fi movie that wants you to suspend your disbelief than a movie, like say, Charlies Angels 2 that's based closer to "reality."

I usually agree with Medjay's reviews...but I disagree with him on Riddick. It wasn't a top-notch sci-fi movie, but it definitely was worth watching. Sure, there were a lot of far-fetched parts of the movie, and many laws of physics were broken...but it's FICTION.

I am waiting on his review of Star Wars: Episode III though. I want him to save me the pain. :D

B-b-b-but it has HOT guys in period costumes. :( Eh, one out of two ain't bad. And I'd like to see what you have to say about the next Bourne movie. I'm a Ludlum fan and so I waited until the first one was released on vid.

I can ususally suspend my disbelief pretty well, and like i said, I didn't think it was horrible. I'm just glad someone else paid for it.

And it wasn't so much the laws of physics that were completely tossed out the window that bothered me. The storyline seemed disjointed to me, and I disliked some of the camera effects. I miss fight scenes in which you could actually see people fighting. And while I loved the Martix, I think filmmakers have adopted that type of effect for everything now, and it doesn't always work.

As cheesy as it may sound, I think Spiderman is going to be the "IT" movie.

I didn't think I was going to buy Matt Damon as Jason Bourne but he really nailed it in the first one. I want to see the sequel just because of him (originally I would have gone because it was Robert Ludlam's best series but they've totally thrown his plot out the window; doesn't matter if it turns out to be good).

And Crusie is supposed to be blonde in the movie. I think he's always had the potential to be a really great villain and this could be the role for him to do it.

Come to the L.A. litogether?
No period costumes, I promise

He doesn't look blond. Anyway, it's a bad look for him. Speaking of which, I saw Master and Commander yesterday too. Russel Crowe does not make a good blond.

I thought the same thing about Damon. I really hate it when actors I don't particularly like end up making great films. The same thing will happen if Collateral is good, because I generally can't stand Cruise.

Question: When the first Batman movie came out, what did you think of it, as compared to the 'super-hero' movies that are coming out now?

*sighs*

All right, I suppose I could see it at Matinee price and you'll be seeing The Bourne Supremacy so it's a good exchange.

I can't think of anymore summer movies I want to see...

When Batman first came out I appreciated it as a Tim Burton movie rather than a "Batman" film. I'd never actually read any Batman comics at that point (I'm a Mavel guy, myself) so I was kinda neutral.

In hindsight I don't think Batman was all that great, especially compared to the Spiderman and X-Men movies recently (and considering I've read a lot of Batman in the years since).

I'm still disappointed that they scrapped plans to produce "Batman: Year One" which would have been based on Frank Miller's graphic novel. It's basically Bruce Wayne's origin story and deals with him being a sociopathic vigilante rather than a larger-than-life superhero. He doesn't even don the Batman costume as we know it; he just runs around in a sweat suit with a cowl on. It would have been great: Dark, serious and rated "R" the way the story should be. Unfortunately it's not going to happen.

I've read the novelization of Spiderman II, and if the effects are half as good at portrayed in the book, then the movie is going to be spectactular. I can't wait to see it.

I'm not a comic book person at all. So, I appreciated it on the same level, I think. Tim Burton is a genius, as far as I'm concerned.

I also think that's one reason I didn't really appreciate the first Spiderman movie. My exposure to, and huge crush on, Spiderman was based on the version that was part of the Electric Company on PBS. So, I grew up thinking that Spiderman was a grown up man, not a kid in a sweatsuit.

The thing about medjays reviews is that they tend to be negative. However, movies tend to suck recently.

It only seems that way because my reviews are just more colorful and memorable when I'm ripping a movie a new one. If I recall, the only films I've felt compelled to bash recently are Troy, Hellboy and Riddick.

For some of my positive reviews check the threads about such films as Kill Bill, Baadassss!, City of God, Monster, Coffee and Cigarettes, Harry Potter, Supersize Me! and Dawn of the Dead.

It's almost scary how much you think like my Hump (significant other) and your birthdays are only a day apart.

Last night we attended a double feature of 'Dodgeball' and '....Riddick' at the drive-in. I mentioned Medjay during the Riddick flick by saying, "There's this guy in Lit who constantly bitches about blockbuster films and he said this is a total stinker."

My balanced Libran beau replied, "Well, if he hadn't seen 'Pitch Black' before then he would not understand this movie."

Me: He saw it. He said the fight scenes suck and the pace is slow. Oh, he also said the dialogue is unbearable and the whole concept of the film is off and everyone should save their pennies and not see it.

Him: What's his problem?

Me: Not sure. But he sure does praise independent films!

Him: Ah, bitter indie junkie. No wonder.

Heh.

Oh, one more thing...

I'm not a sci-fi fan and am not really into Vin Diesel, but I enjoyed the movie. We both did. I can't understand what people expect to see with such movies... the fucking thing was a great summer flick.

Go Watch It!

Yeah, whatever. I might be concerned about these incorrect facts and off-kilter estimations you've made about me but since you seem to be the only one who takes offense at my personal opinions I'll just assume you have the problem.

Sorry to rain on your parade, Mr. Gene Ebert. But when you make comments like this:

In hindsight I don't think Batman was all that great, especially compared to the Spiderman and X-Men movies recently.

You seem to be talking out of your envious, non-filmmaking ass.

Haha, you don't think Burton's original 'Batman' flick is as good as 'Spider-Man' - wow, I wonder why that is!

so is there any news on Burton directing Depp in a remake of Willy Wonka? He should've contacted Walken. I wonder who will play Slugworth.
