Adrian couldn't believe what was happening as he held Cathryn in an embrace. It wasn’t a sexual embrace, but then again he never imagined her wanting a hug. He held her tightly in his bearhug, as he watched the people walk around the reception area of the hotel they were staying in, while the two of them attended the course.
Adrian had been advised, recommended to attend a course with work, and so he duly agreed to attend. For a while, he wasn’t sure who else was attending, but then he heard that Cathryn was. His eyes had lit up on hearing the news.
Cathryn was a work colleague, slender and married, and the two of them quickly got on well when she first joined a couple of years ago. Being almost 20 years younger than he was, whilst they often chatted, he wasn’t in the group that met up often socially, simply he wasn’t invited. But at work, Cathryn and he got on quite well, and had ended up being an ‘Agony Uncle’ when Simon, one of her colleagues cause mayhem in her group, and that their mutual line manager didn’t seem able to resolve the problem.
And so, at opportune moments she would seek him out and would just whinge about him, knowing that Adrien was a good listener, and knew when to make suggestions, but more so, knew when to just listen and nod. His ideas, suggestions were also often worth listening to.
At the end of her whinging sessions, Adrian always offered her a ‘virtual hug’. Earlier on that afternoon after the course had finished for the day, Cathryn had retired to her room and opened her work emails on her work laptop. She suddenly saw a chain of emails from several people, the originator of the chain being Simon.
She read the chain with total anguish, frustration. By the time she had arrived at the bar to join Adrian for a drink and dinner, she was not in the best of moods. Adrian, true to form was a good listener that evening, as she moaned, Adrian often just nodding, or making the odd sound. And soon she felt better as they started to tuck into their evening meal. As usual, Adrian offered Jane his ‘virtual hug’ which always made her smile. But that evening as they walked from the bar to the hotel lobby and the lifts, Jane had turned to face him.
“One day Adrian, I’d like a proper hug from you!” And then without warning, she had literally stepped into his personal space as she reached out and hugged him, her wedding ring pressing into his back as she held him. Adrian reacting accordingly and returned the hug.
He stood there tightening the hug briefly as he inhaled her scents, the citrus smelling shampoo from her hair, her perfume.
Slowly he pulled away as he looked down into her eyes. “Feeling better Cathryn?”
