Jack (24) and Brad (24) were always mistaken for twins even though they had completely different parents. Their genetic similarities came from both their parents who were twins. Their dads were twins who married twins and so it was no coincidence that Jack and Brad, born in the same year, looked like twins. They attended different high schools but participated in the same sports, cross country and track and field. The boys always enjoyed the stares from students and parents when they were in the same race.
Sometimes during their high school years, Jack and Brad would trade places at school, fooling their professors and friends. On some occasions, the men would trade dates, tricking the girl to see if she could discover who she was really dating. Sometimes they were found out and resulted in the girls calling off their relationship. The majority of the dates when they switched, the boys were able to pull off the switch.
After high school, Jack went to Central College on a full athletic scholarship for track and field. During his freshman year he met Naomi Hayashi, a short dark haired girl who also was attending on a full athletic scholarship. Jack liked the young woman who while she was short, she was very competitive. They hung out with the same people, went to a lot of different functions for school and sports but never dated. Brad, meanwhile, received an athletic scholarship to Eastern College for track and field and the only time the two cousins met during their four years of college was on the sports field.
After college Jack went into investment banking while Brad used his business management degree to manage some sports bars including some strip clubs. Jack invested in a few of the clubs Brad was managing and realized a nice tidy return on his initial investment. He and Brad would meet once in a while in one of the bars to catch up on things. A few of the sports bars had a separate area where local artists could play on stage, honing their skills and hoping to get discovered. The strip clubs catered to a wide varied of people who were out on the town for entertainment. A couple of the clubs had back rooms where patrons could get lap dances and one club, the Devil’s Den, catered to the BDSM crowd.
Jack also kept in contact with his college friends, including Naomi through e-mails and facebook. He liked to keep up on what they were doing and found it interesting that Naomi was a private piano teacher and said she wanted to be a musician. From what he knew of her at school and her track and field exploits, she usually excelled at what she put her mind too.
He was looking at his facebook when his cell phone rang. Picking it up, he saw it was a strange number. “Hello this is Jack Connors.” He was surprised when the caller informed him it was Capital Hospital and they were calling on behalf of Naomi Rayashi.
“Wha ….. What are you calling about?” he asked confused.
“We have a Ms. Hayashi here as an out-patient. She was involved in a car accident and she has you listed as the primary contact person.”
“There must be some mistake. I do know a Ms. Hayashi but I’m sure she has some family member that would be the primary contact.”
“I’m sorry Mr. Connors but she has only your name and phone number on the admittance form.” There was silence on the other end of the line and Jack wondered if they were double checking their information. "Mr. Connors, Ms. Hayashi is not in serious condition. She has a concussion along with a few cuts and bruises. She is ready to be discharged in about an hour and she can’t drive herself home since she is on some powerful drugs and besides her car is not drivable."
“I’ll be there as soon as I can,” Jack said clicking the phone off. ‘Why did she use me?’ he wondered as he got into his car. He wondered why she would put his name on the hospital admittance form when his cell phone chimed. It was Brad reminding him that he was going to stay with Jack for a few days since his place was undergoing some renovations. Jack told him he remembered and told him he was on his way to the hospital to see a friend from college. He figured he would drop her off at her place and then head home to see Brad.
When he arrived at the hospital, he drove to the patient pick-up area and walked into the building. He looked at the volunteers at the desk and then glanced down the corridor, seeing a woman sitting in a wheelchair. It was Naomi looking a little confused with a nurse standing by her side. When she looked up, Jack saw her smile as he approached them.
The nurse spoke as her arrived. “Mr. Connors?”
“Yes …. That’s me,” he said seeing the scrapes and bruises on her face as she tried to smile.
“Your friend is sedated and needs to be looked after for at least 24 to 48 hours.” The nurse looked at Jack and added, “Will that be a problem? She can’t be alone and she says she has no one else to look after her.”
“Ahhh …… ahhhh no it won’t be a problem,” he answered.
Jack looked at Naomi, smiling at his friend. “Hey …. Looks like you are in a bit of a bind. I hope you’re not in too much pain.” He took her hand and then added to her and the nurse. “I’ll take you to my place until you’re ready to go home.” He saw her look up at him and then he waited as she struggled to say something.
