"The Beating Of My Heart"

Richard "Ricky" Taylor had been hiding in an alcove off the hotel's main passageway for almost an hour. Down the hall in the main ballroom, the Prom was in full swing. Despite being 18 years old, he was only a junior because of having been kept back in first grade after a car crash kept him out of school for six months. So, he had this Prom and yet another one ahead of him. However...

He got up the courage to head down the hall and into the ballroom, where he almost immediately spotted his dream girl! Ricky had been in love with the angel since he was 5 years old. But two years ago, at the Valentine's Day dance when he'd been a freshman and she a sophomore, she'd promised him a dance. He hadn't gotten it at that dance, and -- of course -- he'd been too young to be invited to the Prom that year. He'd approached her at the Homecoming, Winter Formal, Valentines Dance, and Prom of the next two years. And each time she'd promised him a dance. And each time something had happened to prevent it.

But ... this was her last dance at the school! She was graduating in 5 weeks! He drew a deep breath to steady himself, then marched boldly up to her as she chatted with some of the other gorgeous girls who, also, had never danced with him over the years.

"You promised me a dance," he said with a wide, nervous smile when she looked his way. Under his breath, he murmured, "Two years ago."

Allison Andrews was talking to her friends, discussing thier plans after graduation. Suddenly she heard an unexpected voice speak to her. Allison hadn't even noticed him walk up to them. "Oh...yeah.... You're right Ricky." She forced a smile. She had made a promise but she had figured he would forget about it by now. "I guess I could dance now." How could she turn him down with all her friends watching, she didn't want to seem rude, and he looked so lonely. Maybe she could cheer him up a little.

Ricky's face lit up with delight. He didn't move right away, because he was expecting her to suddenly remember that she had told somebody else she was going to dance with him first, or tell him she needed to go to the bathroom first, or to look past him and act like somebody had waved for her attention, each of which she had done sometime in the past to avoid dancing with him.

So he was absolutely shocked and of course totally delighted when she turned and walked out towards the middle of the floor looking over her shoulder at him with an inviting look. He followed after her and pretty soon the dream of dreams was happening. He was dancing with Allison, the Angel, the only girl he had ever wanted to dance with his entire life. Actually, to be truthful, she was the first girl he'd ever danced with period. But he wasn't about to tell her that.

This song was moderate in pace, and he had been practicing for this moment for years, so Ricky actually looked halfway decent out there on the floor. Nothing fancy. No break dancing. No robot. No smooth water moves with his arms making it look like energy was flowing from one's fingertip to the other through the shoulders. But he thought he looked pretty good.

Then to his horror, the song which had been halfway through before he approached her, was suddenly over. Ricky very quickly asked "Can we dance another song?"

Before she could even answer a slow song started. Ricky's heart began pounding in his chest. He'd finally gotten Allison out onto the floor for a dance that did not involve them actually making physical contact. What were the chances that she was actually going to press up against him to a slow, romantic song?

"I guess that would be alright." She had made him wait all this time so it was only fair that she let him have a full dance. She wasn't so happy about it being a slow song but it was only a couple of minutes. Then it would all be over. He'd be happy, she will have kept her promise and could go her separate way. "Let's dance..."

"I guess that would be alright."

Ricky's mouth widened so far in a delighted smile that he was lucky his head didn't split in half, fall open, and dump his lust filled brain out on his patent leather dance shoes.

She moved a bit closer, holding out her hands and said, "Let's dance..."

Ricky stepped closer, too, looking to Allison's hands. Half his mind was telling him to take her right hand in his left and set his right hand appropriately upon her waist and begin an elegant but unsexy, unerotic Waltz or ... hell, that was the only dance name he knew; while the other half of his mind was telling him to put both hands on her waist, with the intent of moving them back and down to finally cop a feel of the most beautiful body he'd ever been near.

He was trembling! He clenched his fist, trying to hide his fear. He was breathing deeply, too! And worst yet ... he was hard as a rock! Of course, Ricky knew that was going to happen. It always happened when he was near Allison. He removed his hands from Allison's hips, closed his eyes, and shook his entire body as if trying to shed the nervousness. He drew and released yet another deep breath, stepped forward again, and put his hands back where they were. "Okay ... relaxed."

He wasn't yet. But, he was much better. He began swaying with the music, looking up into her eyes since even without her heels, she was half an inch taller than Ricky. He smiled, then chuckled. "I'm better. Really. Please, I've waited to dance with you for so long."

The song continued, and as it did, Ricky loosened up a bit more. He looked deeply into Allison's eyes, a happy smile on his face. Being careful not to go too far too fast, he gently crawled his fingers a bit farther back on her hips, causing his slowly shifting feet to move a bit closer, too.

"Allison, I ... thank you for this," he said, trying not to sound like the desperate virginal naïve geek that he actually was. "I ... I know I'm not exactly the type of guy you usually dance with." Dance with ... hug with ... kiss with ... have sex with, his brain screamed, trying to remind him that he was a nobody. "I ... I just want you to know that I like you. I think you're pretty ... neat."

Ricky grimaced. Neat! Really? He hoped she would let that slip by as he very boldly asked, "Do you ... do you think that ... maybe ... just once ... we could dance ... closer?"
