The red-eye flight from Europe to New York was long due to several flight delays and was tired. He had spent two days in European airports returning from the oil fields of Kuwait and all he wanted to do was put his feet back on the soil of the United States. Sitting in the uncomfortable window seat, he looked out at the large expanse of ocean, thinking about getting home.
He had left the United States 2 years ago when he was 22 to work for an American company doing logistics in the oil field. Lured by the big money offered him after he graduated from Central College with an economics degree. His friends told him he was nuts to go overseas when there were plenty of good jobs in the states. Jack weighed all the options and found the pay working in a dangerous area would be twice what he could make in five years. Besides he didn’t have a girlfriend at the time. He did feel bad leaving his mom, dad, and younger sister Jasmine but he knew he needed to get away from the small town.
His thoughts turned to his family as the moon’s light danced on the ocean below. His parents brought him and sister up in a good small Midwestern town. It was the kind of town where everyone knew everyone else’s business. It was a great place to grow up, playing football for the high school and seeing his sister on the sidelines decked out in her skimpy cheerleader outfit. She was “hot” as some of his high school classmates called her and Jack always looked out for her.
When they were kids, they were friends, confiding in each other about different things. On some occasions he would see her lying on the floor, her ass moving sideways as she watched a movie. He would sit on the couch and before long he jump on her and start to tickle her. When she would try to get away, he would wrestle with her. He was much stronger than her and he liked the feel of her body wiggling under his, trying to get away from him. They would end up laughing when she gave up. One time he had her arms pinned above her head and telling her to say, uncle.” She wasn’t laughing but instead staring at him. He saw something strange in her eyes and had the temptation to kiss her. Before anything happened, they heard their mom call them for supper. They laughed as he let her up but he felt something different about his sister.
The flight attendant interrupted his thoughts as she picked up empty cups and bottles while the captain announced they were preparing for their decent into New York. Jack looked out the window at the lights of the city becoming alive. The sun was rising in the east as the plane made its approach, and Jack felt a little rejuvenated knowing he was back in the states.
Pulling out a piece of paper, he looked at his sister’s address. She lived in the suburbs of the great city and they agreed he could live with her for a while until he found a job and his own place. He smiled as he looked at the paper. She too had fled the small town after graduating from college and from what Jack gathered from her e-mails, she was a free-lance web designer.
The cab ride to Jasmine’s condo was expensive but that didn’t bother Jack. All the work he did overseas contributed to a very nice bank account. He also dabbled in the stock market and was doing very well buying and trading stocks. From his estimates, he could live a few years without worrying about work. A soft whistle came from his lips as the cab pulled up to a swanky condo. ‘Looks like sis is doing really well,’ thought as he paid the driver.
Walking to the ornate oak door with his luggage, he smiled. Jack had told his sister he would be at her place later in the week. Letting out a chuckle, he wondered how Jasmine would react seeing him a few days early. Looking at his watch, it was 10 am. Pressing the door bell, Jack was now anxious to see his sister who he had not seen in person in 2 years. He heard someone yell on the other side of the door and waited expectedly as the door opened.
