Character Profile: Ana'stai - Age 19 - Slave in Sultan's Palace.
"Ana! Bring more water to the prince's quarters! His bath must be warm!"
-"Yes, Madame!"
I have been a slave girl in Sultan's court for as long as I can remember. My mother had been a slave under his rule and her mother before her. The sultan was old. Many wives, many offspring, many years of tyranny. But I knew of a light that not many slaves knew of. His name is Amir. Crown Prince Amir of Persia, first of his name, rightful heir to Lord Sultan Kuman, and many other titles that he has. But I know him by a few lesser known titles. Friend. Confidant. I carried the hot stones and clean water to his bathing quarters and Madame Ais'am looked to me.
"You are never going to be a good maiden if you don't hurry up with orders, that took you two minutes longer than it should have."
-"Yes, Madame." I nodded in approval as I poured the water, whilst she placed the hot stones under the bath basin, stoking the fire to keep them hot for the water. Moving around, I took the silk linens from his bed and smiled as I remembered how he used to sneak me into his room after hours to read fantasy scrolls. It was such a childhood fancy that we both shared. But now, we are both of age and not permitted to see each other in that way any longer. Not permitted by Lord Sultan that is.
Madame Ais'am looked to me. "You must hurry! His highness will be back from his riding lesson soon. He will need a good scrubbing especially after he has ridden one of those Arabian stallions. Those things throw men left and right, and as of late, the Prince as well."
I nodded. "Yes, Madame."
"Is that all you say?" she asked with a smirk.
"Oh no, Madame."
She chuckled as she rushed about the room. "Still such a child.. Thus much to learn! You're supposed to tighten the silk like this!" She ushered me out of the way to show me how to tighten the corners of the bed.
I smiled as I moved near the window sill, looking down into the courtyard. I saw him there. He had just been thrown from one of those wild beasts. Dirt covered his taut face, but he had always been a messy boy. But now he was a prince. A very strong prince. Thin but muscular. Tan skinned oiled and shining in the hard sun. Future King. There had been rumor that his father was ill and soon it should be Amir's throne.
"Ana'stai!" Madame Ais'am scorned me pulling my mind back to reality from the fantasies in my mind. I nearly dropped the porcelain basin I had been holding. "Quit gawking out that window and go check the kitchen for the prince's dinner!"
"Yes, Madame." I walked out of his highness's chambers and walked down the corridor adorned with red roses from the Tudors across the green sea, ivory walls decorated with many sketches of past leaders and many other images. I was looking at them so intently that I didn't even know where I was going until I bumped into someone, dropping the porcelain basin. I dropped to the floor to pick up the pieces. "Oh I am terribly sorry." I looked up to only see it was Amir. His kind eyes staring at me with the emerald beauty I had grown to adore.
