How long should I wait?

How long should I expect to wait for an editor to get back to me? My story is approx 5,000 words.i know it depends on a lot of factors, but how long should I allow from sending them the text?

The answer really is 'how long is a piece of string'.

A lot depends on the individual, how much time they have, what sort of other commitments they have.

You should be asking them for an estimate for the completion of the text at the point of sending them it.

I always say to authors, that I will reply within 24 hours with an estimate once I have seen the text. You need to allow a minimum of 24 hours as we are not all in the same time zone as you.

If during the process of editing, I realise I will take longer I always contact the author to advise the delay.

Family life always takes priority and sometimes it is not possible to make contact for short periods, however at the end of the day it is your choice whether to wait or to try and get someone else involved.

I think best to ask if you used the editor listing or simply sent a message to someone who posts in the forums and says they are an editor. If you used the listing you need to find an editor who is here, most of the listings are of editors who lost their email, died, or no longer offer editing services here.

Be sure to turn on Private Messages.
* To switch on your Private Messages, go to User CP (top left of this page), click on Edit Options (in the left hand column), and then tick Enable Private Messaging in the second box down. Make sure that the box titled Receive Private Messages only from Buddies and Moderators is NOT ticked. Finally, click Save Changes at the bottom of that page.
