On Nov. 29, 1972, a crude table-tennis arcade game in a garish orange cabinet was delivered to bars and pizza parlors around California, and a multi-billion-dollar industry was born. Here’s how that happened, direct from the freaks and geeks who invented a culture and paved the way for today’s tech moguls.

Used to live 15 minutes from Dorney Park, it's pretty awesome!

More than a decade ago, British parents refused to give measles shots to at least a million children because of now discredited research that linked the vaccine to autism. Now, health officials are scrambling to catch up and stop a growing epidemic of the contagious disease.

This year, the U.K. has had more than 1,200 cases of measles, after a record number of nearly 2,000 cases last year. The country once recorded only several dozen cases every year. It now ranks second in Europe, behind only Romania.
...
“This is the legacy of the Wakefield scare,” said Dr. David Elliman, spokesman for the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, referring to a paper published in 1998 by Andrew Wakefield and colleagues that is widely rejected by scientists.

If I lived that close, I might not ever leave the place. I'm about an hour away.

mine had their shots.

the blame lies almost entirely with our idiotic press. one loony doctor made the claim that the mmr shot caused autism, based on a totally flawed pet project of his own carried out, it turns out, illegally. the press decided that the hysteria would sell papers and sod the welfare of the kids.

it used to piss me off no end when other parents went on about the risk of autism. the risk of brain damage & death from the diseases are small but known and proven.

Andrew Wakefield should be in prison for fucking manslaughter.

That begs the question of Homeopathy, in the UK. It is tragedy- free. Do the rules prohibit a child from contracting measles in the UK ?

Don't get me started on homeopathy. Finally it's being withdrawn from NHS funded clinics.

when it was just a handful of parents opting out or opting for snake oil then it wasn't really an issue, because the disease was so unlikely to be passed on and those few children were protected by dispersal in the immunised many.

homoeopathy is fine, legally, until it's being used in place of conventional medicines when the child's health/life is in danger. if your kid gets cancer the courts will rule that you don't have the right to let your kid die for the sake of your beliefs.
