At home with a house full of excited kids for daughter's birthday, I get a call from work - my studio manager's mother has had a massive stroke, following a fall a few days ago. They're not sure how much damage has been done but it's not looking good.

It seems like there's not a week going by at the moment without a crisis. 2014, can you pack it in, please...

One of my staff is an only child - he's in his late forties, married with two children. His parents both developed dementia at relatively young ages, and spent their last few years in (separate) nursing homes before they both died within a year of each other. That was five years ago.

In the UK, if the elderly require nursing as opposed to medical care, then it isn't free, unless you are poor. The local council appropriate any income, such as a pension, from the elderly person, but this does not fully cover the cost of the care. So the reality is that, once they die and they have a home available for sale, the council get to claim the shortfall back from the sale proceeds.

The whole situation was extremely traumatic for him - he had no siblings to help share the burden and he had to lose both his parents slowly over the years, and then deal with the bureaucracy of the house sale/outstanding fees.

Anyway, it was all settled after a year or so. Since then, his wife has lost her well paid job because her employer went bust, and they have had to downsize their house during the past year because they could no longer afford the mortgage.

Then, out of the blue, he got a letter a month ago from the council who are claiming yet more money from him, running into thousands of pounds. They are saying that they can find no record of certain payments that were made, and that the amount that he was asked to pay was underestimated anyway.

He's just come back from a medical check and his blood pressure is through the roof. He has aged dramatically over the past few weeks. But the thing that is really pissing me off is that I can't help him - I'm not allowed to speak on his behalf, to talk to the council and try to find out how this situation has arisen after such a long time - they can 'only speak to the account holder'. I can see that they're blinding him with science and, because he's stressed out anyway, he can't put a coherent argument together to prove them wrong. The whole thing is so unfair, faceless bureaucrats hiding behind procedure.

Lally, if I move there, will you hire me? You sound like an amazing boss! You care so much for your employees (maybe even too much for your own good).

I hope your employee will soon catch a break from all the twists and turns life has thrown his way.

So... I'm at breakfast. Sitting at the bar. There's one seat open with a tiny space, two guys, then a wide open spot where someone clearly took a stool from the bar. I ask "is someone sitting here?" "No". I SHOEHORN myself in and the two guys can't be bothered to scoot over a bit. My elbows are glued to my side. Really? Really? Asses!

Ahhhh someone left, moved to COMPLETELY OPEN area. Ahhhhhhh.
Oh that should go in the happy thread.

I have agoraphobia (the crowd fear), why is it also the open spaces fear? I think they're totally different. And that should go in isolated blurts thread.

One glass of champagne, sheesh!

Why didn't you just move the stool to the wide open spot?

There was a woman all comfortably spread out in the wide open spot. I actually held the chair and did the lean/look thing to see if I could fit it there and the guys still didn't get the hint.
I moved to her spot as soon as she left (the chair was still warm)

We all had a good laugh when the two guys left just now and I told the couple to my other side that they weren't the reason I moved.

So the wide open spot was not open or not wide.

Why don't you complain about the woman taking up so much space in the "wide open spot"?

There was no seat there. Try to visualize. Try. Try.

I had to use my sergeant voice this morning when I saw someone lazily drop trash on the ground and saunter off. There was a trash can six feet away from this person! I HATE it when I have to use the sergeant voice!!

I need a cross bow.

Look pal, you're not getting it. And I didn't move my stool until several cups of coffee later.

I think thats demophobia? though I see wikipedia redirects that to agorophobia (fear of wide open spaces) effectively calling the two nearly opposite extremes by the same name. I would think either or both would be more closely related to claustrophobia. Mine certainly is.

On further reading; it appears they are considered to be related based on an overwhelming sense that a space is unsafe based on specific "irrational" criteria (crowds, tight space, emptiness, bottle necks, social expectations, specific sounds or colors...)

I find it hard to justify any argument that any space crowded with strangers is remotely safe, thats seems like a pretty rational fear to me.

It can be hard to understand why a demophobe doesn't speak up, or just plain leave. I generally do the second.

You try the completely approved method of communication, the "look thing", instead of the completely overrated method of communication, called "talking". After your approved method of communication failed, you decided to sit where there was actually not enough space, instead of putting a stool where a stool was removed earlier. Then you sat there uncomfortably and angry, still unable to just politely ask someone to move a bit. And you end the day complaining here about guys who can't deal with social situations.

Sunshine, I totally get your kind.

yeah, lean and look? I'm actually going to agree with Lexie on this one.

DON'T EXPECT MEN TO GET HINTS. in fact, don't expect women to get hints either. You tell them what you are hoping they do. Using words. Words are really good, especially in bars where people might be a little drunk, a little less likely to take hints.

In fact, that's what makes me mad on a daily basis these days, my passive agressive mother who cannot answer questions with simple yes or no. As in; "do you want sourdough toast?" She tells me "I don't care" and we ALL KNOW THAT SHE CAREs-- what she wants is for her loved ones to read her mind because they love her so much. She cares a lot about that. And that is so sad, because it's never going to happen with the kind of perfect accuracy she demands. Mostly, it results in us just avoiding having to interact with her, and that is sad too. And it's never going to change, either. She is far too old to ever learn to be happy.

Don't grow up to be that person, I beg of you.
