Okay, so apparently I have been awarded choice of what the current challenge will be...next weekend I will be attending a gaming/SF/Fantasy convention in Williamsburg (Marscon), plus we have all the tension building as the playoffs are finally winding. sooo...

Write something about "The Big Game". It might actually be the thing the NFL is leading up to, but it might be something allegorical or it may be some other sort of game that has or does loom large in your life.

Being that American football is the focus for many people this time of year, I'm going to adjust the line spread slightly. Instead of 10-25 lines, let's go with 7-28.

As with previous challenges in this series, last person to post by midnight (Eastern time) at the end of Sunday, 1/20, will get to choose the next one.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Additionally, if you are new to this challenge series, please visit the previous installments to read or post your own poetic view of that subject. Of course, anyone can jump right in at any point.

It's all a game Annie. :p

Rule 8: The Big Game

It was 67 nothing,
winter, time out,
pin-ball struggle of life,
chiming out the little points,
still winning,
still fresh.
Don't tilt.

Life is the biggest game of all :)

Unforgettable

Another jarring hit and down he goes
Face first into inches of mud
Relentless rain creating a morass
With a groan he slowly rises
His mate extends an arm
With a grasp he raises his brother
Joining their mates in the cold
A huddle of youngsters with a dream
This is it, a last play with barely time
A season of brutal grinding
Straining muscles and minds
Pain, victories, losses, exhaustion
Down to this one final play
Their opponents are the same
Desperate, hungry, tired, and filthy
Today, one team would win

Lightning flashes in the distance
Thunder follows slowly
And he crosses the goalline
And it is over
Today and forever
They are Champions
Their shared ordeal is over

Whoops and cheers echo
In ears and minds through time
Looking at their fading pictures
No matter what, with a smile
Champions for just one more day

Homecoming

“GO TEAM” in blue tempura paint
Hand lettered by a blonde cheerleader
The one who hopes to be crowned queen
Homecoming pep rally
Royal blue and white hand knit sweaters and scarves
Coach yells and helmeted boys strut
Anxious for the game tonight
Will Joe score a touchdown again?
The handsome boy who will surely be king

The air is cold and crisp, the lights bright
Young men scramble on the field
Onlookers watch from cold bleachers

Midwest traditions, highschool rites of passage
I don’t recall who won that night
Or who was crowned homecoming queen
Just the ride home after the big game
His arm around my shoulder

We play these intellectual
crash course ideological
insanities, far right, far left
focusing on the divisions of extremes
where moderation and slight adjustments
of the rules kept us on an even keel
the click bait of main stream media
the buried behind the surface
dark web of intellectual delights

these things run games of chaos
no one knows where the sniper is
until he’s taking out your mates

the political messaging of a Gillette
advert,
the male bashing concerns
Watch Moana and see how every female character is
somehow perfect every male is flawed
watching Rey from Star Wars and some how she’s
a light sabre ninja with no training
or the constant haranguing of what it should
or shouldn’t be to be masculine

but criticise a woman, criticise the Devine feminine
and you’re lambasted
drag through the dirt as a heathen

Roll the dice on religion and you see the mind still
works in thesistic ways it just
replaces the divine knowledge of the bible
with the bullshit peddled in academia

When three tricksters can
re-write chapter 12 of Mein Kampf
and receive critical accolades
you know the game has been rigged

Half an Elephant Lifetime Ago

First, we walked up Kilimanjaro
From rainforest to glacier.
On the third day, a dark late
night trek up the scree slope to
Gillman’s Point to watch the
sun rise over the Indian Ocean
then on to Uhuru summit.
A fast scramble down
I drank unfiltered water
and soon needed Imodium.

Then on to the Serengeti,
we saw four of the big five
Lion, Leopard, Elephant and Cape
Buffalo although Rhino eluded us.
But also, Cheetah, Eland, Giraffe,
Hippopotamus, Wildebeest, Zebra,
Impala, Kudu, Dik Dik, Bush Baby
Grant’s and Thompson’s Gazelle,
Waterbuck, Topi. Meercat, Hyena,
Jackal, Warthog, Baboon, Coleus Monkey
Flamingo, Secretary Bird and Maribou
Stork. All captured in photos of various
quality on 35mm film and kept in
slide boxes and carousels
somewhere in the basement.

When you bend to tie your laces,
when you wipe away the blood
from the head wound that was taken
from a misplaced landed stud.

When you stuck inside a scrum
just waiting for a pass,
do you ever wonder why, your
head's stuck up someone's ass?

As you limp away defeated,
this time you are the losers,
when you limp like Quasimodo
from a hundred thousand bruises.

Yet when your age has you finally
relegated to yelling on the line,
You're of the breed of people, who
know that Rugby's mighty fine!

Sorry not to have replied earlier, but was out of town until late Sunday afternoon, then napped to recuperate and spent most of Monday catching up on this and that and watching our after school charge all day since it was a school holiday....

But, here I am, and from what I see it looks like UnderYourSpell is our winner and gets to choose the next Wheel Challenge.
