~~~Musical Muse~~~
Usually I'll listen to whatever song inspired the story, or what ever fits. Classically my go to's are Testament, Pantera and Trivium. Recently I've been more into Wednesday 13 and Murderdolls, and Dope. Of course, like Jello, there's always room for Marilyn Manson.
For me, Till Lindemann's voice is a major turn on--especially when that gorgeous man is growling at me--so if ever I need to um, jump start the muse, he's a good place to start.
^warning: video contains m/m humiliation, fake phalluses, and a cum hose...because...Rammstein.
Otherwise, songs to help get the creative juices flowing, for writing purposes:
Closer -- Nine Inch Nails
Spank -- Kidneytheives remixed by KMFDM
A.D.I.D.A.S. (all day I dream about sex) --Korn
I listen to film scores while writing. Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, James Horner, etc. What scores in particular depend on what type of script I'm writing.
Earlier this summer I sold another screenplay, a horror thriller, and listened to Christoper Young's horror scores ( Hellraiser, The Fly 2, etc ). I guess it works. If I'm working on a thriller or action piece, the scores are action/adventure.
I do find that sometimes listening to instrumental music is a lot less distracting from your writing, so you can focus more on the words you want to write. I've heard several authors who admitted to listening to film music, so I guess it's not such an odd choice.
For me, I just can't listen to any popular music while writing. The lyrics distract my feeble mind, plus I like to choose my "writing music" to put me in a mood. Rock/pop, whatever, doesn't do that for me.
For me, it has to be either film scores, or some electronic instrumental stuff like Tangerine Dream.
Well, film scores are composed for the sole purpose of putting the listener in a certain mood, so it's no surprise that's how you use it. I haven't personally tried a lot of film scores yet, but I do have some playlists on youtube with instrumental music of different moods and emotions. They work pretty well for me when I'm getting too distracted from the lyrics of the music I normally listen too.
I find dubstep/techno helpful when I'm looking for music without a lot of lyrics...
Gotta throw this one out there:
Music plays a big part in my writing process. Sometimes, certain songs click in my head as being part of the mood of the segment of the story that I'm working on and I listen to them while working on that part of the story, etc... Instead of film scores, I find I listen to a lot of post rock (99% of which is instrumental) while I'm writing as general background music. Lyrics tend to distract me unless they fit with what I'm working on.
Examples:
Explosions In The Sky
Jesu (this one has lyrics)
Mogwai (actually, the song I used as an example is from a film they scored. Go figure.)
