it is a dark and wintry night
after a cold and blustery day
the wind is whipping through the trees
and I can hear the coyotes howl.
is that you?
as the wind brushes past the wind chimes...
i pull the blanket tight around me
is that you?
whispering in my ear
murmurs of encouragement
of love and sweet nothings...
the wood shifts in the stove
the sparks flying up the chimney
it is late and i am weary
weary beyond all reason
my eyes are heavy
and I feel overstimulated
too many people
too many places
too much outrage fatigue
haven't we fought these battles?
we have earned this ground.
i lean back sighing
how long? how long?
my feet ache from marching...
how long? how long?
and the coyote howls into the wind...
is that you?
kiss my forehead
tuck me into bed
dry my tears of frustration
and anguish
it is more than I can take
let me feel safe
for the next few hours
it is all that i ask.
Thou art safe, darling. So says the coyote.
