Like a lot of other people (I assume), I came here looking for good quality erotic stories, and while it's fair to say I found a lot of works that appear to fit the genres that interest me, it's also fair to say that quite a few of those works aren't particularly well written. I found I was spending a lot of time reading work which I quickly found disappointing.

During my relatively short membership in Lit, I've spent a lot of time searching for stories that not only stimulate the mind sexually, but also hold your attention by 'involving' the the reader in the scenes themselves.

It occurred to me that if I'm having problems finding really well written work, then others may feel the same? Browsing through Categories and Tags doesn't really help much toward finding work that really stimulates and satisfies, and I felt it might help others if there was some way to identify a good writer, outside of the 'Hot' scoring (which often only seems to identify how much graphic sex is included).

I should say up-front, that I would never intend (nor suggest) to use this thread to identify work that falls short of my expectation. I certainly wouldn't want that and I hope no-one else would do that either.

About a week ago I came across an author (by accident - I can't even remember how) that stood head and shoulders out from the crowd, and reading her work inspired me to open this thread. Leaving a comment on the story may please the author, inspiring them to write more, but it doesn't really tell others much about the work. I would expect that if an author writes one story well, it's fair to assume that his or her other works will be of a similar standard.

So... I hope this thread can be used to 'Tell the World' about an author (on Lit), and say why you felt that his/her work was noteworthy. Adding a link to the story that inspired you to nominate your 'favourite' would also be a benefit to all :)

If this has been done before (it probably has), maybe someone could add a link to the original thread(s) so that we can all share the value of other people's past experience?

For my part, I would like to nominate MelissaBaby as my first 'Top Author'.
Melissa's Mini-series, My Fall and Rise, appears to me to be very professionally written.

The prose is carefully constructed and the descriptions are detailed and precise. Melissa has an uncanny gift of being able to 'draw' the reader into the scene, and you can almost feel her pain and suffering as she takes you with her on her journey to hell and back. It's fair to say that the subject matter is not one of my favourites, but I had only to read the first chapter and I was hooked.

11 out of 10 from me :D
Thanks Melissa :)

Thank you, Macey, for honoring my work with your kind words of appreciation.

And the genre you're interested in is...

We might be able to give you a lot of references that you wouldn't be at all interested in.

Seconded. I've got a list of a dozen authors that I think produce consistently great work here, but there's also some stuff on this site that is wildly popular with many many people that I find absolutely horrid.

How about this? Are there any genres that you do *not* like? For example, I personally really don't like non-consent stories. If we know what to avoid, that'll help us to make good suggestions for you.

Well, I admit I try to bring a little more than just "wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am" to the stories I choose not to flush down the recycle bin. But, while I'm not going to tell you not to click on my link and check me out, I also am the first to admit I'm still learning to weave a good tale. So, on your own head be it if you wander down my rabbit hole.

Also, as others have said, it's a bit difficult without knowing just what trips your switch to recommend since those recommended authors may or may not have it all with a side of fries as far as you're concerned.

However, here are some that I like to keep up with. And I, usually, haven't been too disappointed.

qhml1

Bobby Brandt

Joe Dreamer

DreamCloud

IronicLaconic

Tx Tall Tales

xelliebabex

IncomingPornDuck

BurntRedStone

Lien Geller

Lovecraft68

JimBob44

CarlusMagnus

Slyc Willie

And I've probably given too much considering I'm not even sure they will meet your flavors. And you're, of course, welcome to risk my own happy horseshit so long as you are willing to put up with a bunch of longwinded rambling to get the to fucking point. (Except for my N/E contest entry, which fucking was decidedly not the point. But, I still went into a longwinded ramble anyway. :p)

Some additions

I agree with much of PuckIt's list. I enjoy stories with character development and plot, with sex less of the focus than a part of lives coming together.

I'd add to the list oshaw, Rehnquist (who doesn't write anymore here?), and The Unoriginalist. There are some who are just fun: Harddaysknight, Ohio, qhml. FrancesMacomber, Joesephus have some good things, too.

Oshaw's Fortune is not without flaw but every time I read it, I like it.

Rehnquist's Knox County and other writings are very good. I wish he'd write more. I wonder if he writes in the Real World using his Real Name, and writing here was just honing his skills.

Unoriginalist only has one full story here if I remember correctly, but it's very good.

I like questions about whom to recommend to readers. I apologize for shamelessly plugging myself (using a different name); I've removed it.

We might be able to give you a lot of references that you wouldn't be at all interested in.

Mainly, Lesbian Sex and Lesbian Non Consent, but anything involving girls and young women kissing, petting, and being introduced to lesbian 'activities,' either by seduction or forcibly...

Am I weird or what? - lol :D

PS: I wasn't posting this simply to ask for references for me. I was hoping it could be a means to identify good quality writing in general - not just 'Hot' stories (the site already has that :))

Thanks.
M.

I think this is a great idea. The problem is that every reader probably has his or her own idea of what would qualify an author to be on the top list, and one reader's top-list author might not be another's. Therefore, I think it's important in compiling a list like this to ask that each nomination include a short justification of why the author should be included, as you did in your original post. This will help other readers decide whether a recommended author might really be up their own particular alley.

Also, I'd point out that the Favorites page of your Literotica home page is one place to highlight your own particular favorite authors and stories. When I come across a story that I really like, I take the author's favorite suggestions very seriously.

I agree that this was an exceptional series, and I'd like to point out that it has been nominated for the The 2017 Literotica Award Nominations: Most Literary--Genre Transcending. You can visit this thread to cast a vote.

That was the main motive Hector... Thanks, but I'll say again, I was thinking more about the quality of writing (construction of prose, use of vocabulary, etc.) more than the genre or subject matter - the Tags can help you decide on that :)

Wasn't aware of that.
This is precisely what I was looking for :)
Thanks for your contribution Hector :D

I have the confidence to feel like my work meets these requirements. My stories Orchid, Violet, The Incident At Last Home, and Terrible Company are accessible and well written, and cover a wide variety of themes, kinks, and storytelling styles.

You could try this one. Its a lesbian first time story between best friends. Written three years ago. Warning I'm not exactly a grammar master, but think the story itself overcomes a lot of that.

my two favorites in the 'lez coercion' genre:

krr1957

sadly, neither posts new stories. :(
krr1957's Her Cold War still rings my bell.

Thanks to everyone for the contributions so far - I'll look them up :) xxx

It looks like you have quite a few for now. I'll start to look for stories that I think might fit your tastes and let you know when I find them.

I hope you find something that excites and inspires you sensually as well as for you to write more as well.

Take care,
Rich :)

I nominated MelissaBaby’s My Fall and Rise and it is going up against one of mine. It is that good.

Recommendations

When I find a good story on Literotica, one thing I will do is first, check out if there are more stories by that writer.

The second, and probably overlooked by many readers, is checking if that writer has favorites. I've found many gems over the years by reading stories and favorited writers listed by others whose work I have enjoyed.

If you haven't done that yet, you really should. And if there are particular themes, fetishes, et al, then you can check the Hall of Fame categories, too.

Well, on LIT, you get what you pay for. Since virtually anyone can submit a story, the only reason there aren't worse stories is that they are first filtered and approved by Laurel.

I'd suggest searching the Top Lists in the category you're most interested in. If you can't find any there, then perhaps you can write your own good quality stories for the rest of us. :cattail:

I'm relatively new here, so I'm still finding my way around, but I came across a mini-series by blackbel2003, called Sabel, about a training course for Pony-Girls. So far, I'm loving it :)

en_extase was an excellent contributor here until around 2012. Several of his pieces involve ur-lesbianism, and the most prominent of those is called “Wicked Stepsister.”

Do a search. Read it, and then use the story tags to discover more.

alwayswantedto set the standard for mother-son incest. You'd think they get repetitive but each one was different enough. Hot, hot stuff.

Oh, wait...

Most anyone from the Authors Hangout

It's been my experience that the writers who frequent the Author's Hangout take the craft of writing seriously and typically produce high-quality work. I've been reading AH authors almost exclusively recently. Here's a list of my favorites...
  • Bebop3
  • ChloeTzang
  • electricblue66
  • ellen_devlin
  • MelissaBaby
  • NotWise
  • SweetErika
  • SimonDoom
  • VanessaLee

In my opinion, the best way to find stories you like is to find one or more authors who write stories that satisfy your criteria and then to look at their favorite author and favorite story lists. It's a much more reliable way of finding stories than looking at scores or top lists. Another way is to look at the "similar story" list at the end of a story that you like.

It's hard for me to enjoy a story if the grammar, spelling, and punctuation are too sloppy. But, as an author, I've come to appreciate the difficulty of self-editing, and even though I think I have a pretty good handle on spelling and grammar, I constantly find proofreading mistakes in my submissions that make me wince. And my readers find them too! The difficulty of getting it perfect has made me somewhat more forgiving as a reader.

Thank you for the kind inclusion.

Your story "Romancing The Bequia Mermaid" is one I would recommend, assuming the OP/reader likes stories about exhibitionism. It's well written and constructed, it features adult characters who are well drawn, not cartoon characters, and it's kinky and erotic without being too contrived.

Another author I would recommend is Paco Fear, who I believe no longer writes here. If you are into incest stories but want something more thoughtful than the usual silly romp (of which I have unashamedly written a few), his Words on Skin is really good -- a well-crafted brother-sister story with some other kinks thrown in. It has good prose, good dialogue, plot twists, descriptive detail, foreshadowing, character development, misdirection, surprise (although I did figure it out beforehand), etc. It is the second most-favorited story on Literotica, and it attained its high rank without featuring a mom sitting on a son's lap in a car (not that there's anything wrong with that).

Al Steiner has some stories here, and I've always liked his stuff. Much of his work contains elements that this site doesn't allow, so you have to go elsewhere to find those stories, but he does have some stories here. His story Miss Darling is one of the best slow build/frustration romance/erotic stories I've read here. I love the ending of that story.

Holliday1960 also writes stories with good prose and well-developed characters. Her Love Letters in the Sand is a romantic and erotic "mature" story I recommend.

There are a lot of others, some of whom already have been named on this thread, that I would endorse, but these are a few that spring to mind.

Try combining that: Go look at who's posting in the AH and then look up their profile. Then you can either see what they write, or what they like to read (favorite authors).
AH inhabitants are generally a little ... spoiled. So their standards tend to be a little higher than others (and a lot more focused on character building than pure sex ;) ). So regardless of genre, whatever is being favorited here generally doesn't suck. Then it's only a matter of which genre you prefer.

Not taking the profile-way, going through the Hall of Fame is never a bad thing to do either. You'll also notice there are a couple of AH people showing up there, which is usually not a coincidence ;)

I started off with the Hall of Fame in a category and looked if there was anything interesting there. If there was, I'd see if that person has written more stuff in my genre. After a while, I came to the AH and I'm now slowly reading through whatever all these people here have written.
