* Set in probably 1800's England
* Main male character (William) is renting out the floor above a bakery where he operates a low-service boarding house
* During the day, he's a carpenter in a furniture shop
* A young women Elizabeth shows up one day and begs for the opportunity to clean for a night's lodging. He agrees if she'll sleep with him. She says that she doesn't want to be in the family way, but she'll sleep with him if he honors that. He does
* He took pity on her because she looked horrible and reminded him of his sister, who died of a plague along with his parents
* They sleep together, don’t have any kind of sex but enjoy the companionship
* She asks if she can stay a month with him. He agrees
* As she lives with him, she blossoms. She fills out and grows taller.
* She finds work in the area. She is very good at needlework and does needlework in the window overlooking the street when he's on his way home
* Later, she says that she hasn't earned as much as she had hoped and would like to stay with him another month. He agrees
* He begins to think about marrying her
* One night, they hear a terrible howling sound outside their building
* The next day when he comes home for lunch, she's gone
* Two weeks later, he gets a message from her. She's in a remote manor and needs his help. She asks him to come there looking for carpenter work and to pretend to not know her
* He goes and gets a job working at the manor
* It's a terribly depressing place. The master of the manor is an old man that everyone is scared off. The girl is his betrothed and she sleeps with him every night
* There's a devil dog locked away in remote kennel. Everyone is terrified of it
* The Elizabeth tells him that the master is far, far older than he appears and he keeps living by sucking the life from her when he sleeps with her. Eventually, he'll marry her and then suck the last of her vitality from her
* Escape is pointless as the devil dog will track her down
* She's linked to the master by a terrible ritual. If she marries or has sex with anyone but the master, she dies instantly. If she refuses to marry him, she'll die instantly
* She keeps getting weaker and smaller. As she gets to be mere skin and bones, the master begins to talk of their marriage night
* The master begins to look older as she apparently doesn't have enough vitality to keep him tanked up
* William comes up with a plan
* He recruits the priest to hide with him in an armoire in the master's bedroom on the night before when the master intends to marry Elizabeth
* He lights a fuse which causes four bright flares to go off in the room
* When the flares light, he steps out of the armoire. The bright light has the master cowering
* The priest marries Elizabeth and the master
* William fucks Elizabeth
* The devil hound break loose and everyone in the master's bedroom can hear it running towards the house, then it making its way towards the room
* William has a sword that has been blessed by the priest. He hides Elizabeth behind him when the devil dog enters the room
* The devil dog looks at him but then attacks the master. It tears him to bits. William moves to try to make a killing stroke on the devil dog, but when the master dies that beast returns to whereever it came from
* The couple and the priest goes downstairs. The priest announces to the staff that the master is dead and that Elizabeth inherits everything as his widow. He then marries Elizabeth and William. They live happily ever after
