If you had a grey clothing item and wanted it a bit more tan than grey, how would you do it? Could you use coffee or tea? Maybe a bit strong? We all know they stain when you don't want them to, but will they stain by choice? And be durable so the color will stay?

Or is there some other method (short of commercial fabric dyes)?

Depending on the exact colors and dyes involved, washing the greys with something red to turn a bluish grey into a pinkish tan might do what you want.

You can probably use coffee or tea -- I'd try a strong black tea -- but you'll need a mordant, like alum, to set the color.

All you can do is experiment. (and read up on vegetable dyes and mordants)
