Broaden My Horizons Please... Musically

Current era so-called 'new country' is turning out some cracking, even rockin' songs with some incredibly talented and self-assured singers - a couple of the absolute best have to be:

Rascal Flatts - 'Yours If You Want It.' And the pop hit - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIwKZLcQM0E

And,

Luke Combs - 'Hurricane.'

As for 'chill' or 'uplifting' music the world of 'progressive' music, and some I guess 'trance' is also producing very advanced and interesting music, Alex H and Gregory Esayan being among the leaders there although there are a LOT of notable singers and musicians, including some really REALLY outstanding male voices among the ex-operatic female singers.

Jonathan Mendelsohn is probably the stand-out male voice but there are more than just two or three around right now - his work with Dash Berlin and Alexander Popov has produced half a dozen stunning songs: 'Steal You Away,' 'Better Half of Me' 'World Falls Apart...' These are really stunning.

And then there is the exquisite 'Illenium Said The Sky' with Cristina Soto.

And Katrin Souza Incepto - the remixes are astonishing.

Tritonal -Satellite feat Jonathan Mendelsohn is one of the most staggering, stunning and capable vocal renderings anywhere at anytime:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=egw1IRUwyzs

and this mix, for a different (REALLY out there) emotional spin:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOD8rQdz0Mg

And probably the most avant garde mix of all, the incomparable Florence Welch squeezes fluid out of pussy right here:

Thank you for the suggestions. Much of that is too trance like. However the Tritonal Satellite one - 2nd to last link - isn't a bad option for a slow down break of the upbeatness. :D

Previously posted elsewhere but why reinvent the wheel ?

That's a serious amount and I know at a glance that several of those are not too upbeat or cheerful... If I may ask for you to suggest one or two options from that extensive list that are cheerful upbeat type pieces?

Check and check. Good call.

Some interesting stuff from an eclectic grouping:
St. Paul and the Broken Bones
Josh Ritter

We're adding both of these to my let's look at them more list. :)

I'm probably too extreme now but if you have Spotify or something similar you could try these. If you're not Swedish and at least my age (50+) I can almost guarantee that you have never heard them before.

- Kebnekajse :
Barkbrödslåten
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylS0H6zQDho

Horgalåten
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_e7r0ABEHA

I hope the Swedish letters doesn't cause any problems.

I liked these two. Thankfully you made it so I can just copy and paste.

Turin Brakes

Bastille

KT Tunstall

all good. Hope you find something fresh x

Good call on all of these! Grazie!

If you really want to expand your horizons try some instrumental prog rock.

They have their heavier moments but don't really focus in on one genre or anything.

Music for musicians from an 8 string Jazz guitarist prodigy who decided to push his limits.

Animals as Leader - Behaving Badly

Besides, he's black, so now you have to at least give it a try or you're a racist Nazi Alt-Right fascist.

Hahaha... now see, if only I could deal with you on this type of level all the time. Much more entertaining. :D

They're not quite my taste. And to be fair, I even listened to a good four, five of their songs. But hey, different strokes. Thank you for recommending them. I hadn't heard them before so it was something new.

Little by little... I'm making my way through. I am getting some very good suggestions. Very cool.

Foo Fighters

early Garbage

Duran Duran

Patsy Cline

new Harry Styles

Def Leopard

Yeah same thing, dont raid my CD's

Cept for Madcon, and that link isnt available in Australia. Damn licencing shit.

I've heard rumblings you and Disgustipated discuss music on occasion - so I can see where we might have some of the same taste.

I think my extremes are far more girly than his, so that rarely sees the light of day.

I think you might be surprised. I mean I've thrown some pretty girly shit at him and he's known it and appreciated it or at least been willing to listen to it. It's one reason we get on so well.

Here's my disparate summer selects for upbeat-ness:

Totally upbeat shit from the latter '90s when things were really fun without having to think too hard to have fun, before America got uglier. You might've bypassed this.

Yeah, you should have this shit already. In case you don't, I'm reminding you. 1981 had this shit on lockdown and it stands the test of time. Whole album is fire, but if you want upbeat, just play Numbers really cranked up and feel your head nod, ass bump and all your anxieties disappear for that space of time.

Prince's old bandmates dropped this breezy sapphire funk gemstone back in 1989. It's their second joint and it's uber upbeat. Might've overlooked it, give it a go. This is good for when you're playing pool and wanna twist your hips a bit between shots. ;)

That link to the one-mic, one-take of Take Me To The Alley should tell you to snatch this up if you haven't got Gregory Porter already. And get his earlier albums while you're at it. His voice is soothing and the vibe generally punches up, even if some of the tracks may not be the "upbeat" jazz vocals you're used to.

DYLTS-DJ-Cam-feat-Anggun-Summer-In-Paris-Reflex-Remix.jpg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hqhq37ifeo

This is a single, not an album, but you can cop the DJ Cam-produced assembly it's on, which has lots more gems on it, just that this is the standout track and it does the trick perfectly. It's so fucking breezy and upbeat. Anggun totally killed this. Drippin' with sex. Used to get super lit to this back in the early-aughts day.

I tend to like the gloomier stuff. Things that are lyrical, but not about love and breakups and shit.

I'd just recommend jazz. I've been exploring Stanley Clarke lately . . . his sound is pretty diverse.

Any of you European types familiar with a guitar duo that uses either 'Old' or "Old Feeling' as a name? One of their names is 'Hasseman', but I don't know the other name.

I got three or four pieces from Amazon; "Medley', "Dream", "Sphinx" and another I can't find right now. All very simple, but interesting and relaxing.

Music.......

One of my favorites

Mr. Bojangles - Nitty Gritty Dirt Band

And the mellow voice of Nora

Norah Jones - Don't Know Why

I love this one especially the verse: I carry it with me and I sing it loud, If it gets me nowhere I'll go there proud,"

Jim Croce - I Got a Name

Comshaw

I smiled all the way through Bo Jangles this morning. That's a check. :)

I really like "She" by Norah Jones.

As suggested I have added YouTube links now. I have two more to recommend.

- Jan Johansson:
Visa från Utanmyra
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pZOcVvbEhw

Swedish folk tune in an instrumental Jazz version.

- Monica Zetterlund:
Sakta vi gå genom stan.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GF_NDRM3498

'Walking my baby back home' in Swedish.

I liked the first one a lot. The second one is cool but the problem is with any foreign language, it makes it really difficult because I keep trying to discern words. :D

Social Distortion. Not hard punk but lots of angst. Good hard rock sound. Sometimes bluesy, country, punk and rock.

https://www.bing.com/videos/search?...-17&sk=&cvid=E782A1AFB93040CB9FB1EE4E9A331E2B

I had forgotten about them. I'll add them onto my check into list.

And on a side note... Bing? :p

Phantogram
Tobacco
Silversun Pickups
Autolux

Well... You have much better taste in girlfriends than you do music. ;) However I appreciate you trying - twice.

I do have to give you points for giving me a good solid few minutes of entertainment this morning with this little gem. It was a link or two down from one of the first two on your list. While the lyricist gets pretty much zero points - the video was seriously entertaining. :D

I just discovered this a few weeks ago, and have been listening to it over and over again.

Alejandro Escovedo- "Sway"

That's a bit... not upbeat and happy. It's a good song, but not quite cheerful enough. ;)

Meh, the original is better.

I'm sorry to admit Melissa, but I must agree with him.

you're thinking of stray cat blues. i'd post a link, but laurel would get mad.

As she should. That's not a very good song.

Glad you liked some of them.

Yes I did thank you. And this thread is turning out to be an excellent idea as well as cataloging resource for me.

This is working out better than I expected.

shut up. can't you hear me knocking is playing now.

Meh.

Yes it is a better version but it's still not a happy or upbeat song.

You might try Dream Theater.

I like the way they sound when their songs start, but then about 30 seconds in they shift gears and it's not as pleasant sounding to me.

Try the Jezebels

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvCr1UAcPc4

It was not wierd, it was awesome!

Sally Seltmann was New Buffalo, and was in Seeker Lover Keeper

She said happy. Hell, I'm amazed I found anything

Jezebels - check.

Yes it was weird. It was kinda awesome, but still very weird.

Silversun Pickups are not happy. However, they were the least... erratic and abrasive sounding of the selections. :D

And for energetic instrumentals ... Liquid Tension Experiment.

That was also a bit... harsher than I generally prefer. However, they were interesting and I had never heard of them before.

Caro Emerald -
A Night Like This
I love pretty much anything by her.

Caro Emerald -
Tangled Up

Hooverphonic - Mad About You

Koop - Koop Island Blues - so the lyrics are sad, but it's got a jazzy beat to it that you can't help but kind of sway to.

Very nice. 4 for 4.

What's Caro Emerald's best CD in your opinion?

oh, and alvvays was a good choice. supposedly they have anew album coming out soon. hopefully it won't suck.

and this is apparently a song from that new album. good job, thread.

in undertow

I don't think it sucks. I might have to get it. Grazie for the preview. :)

I smiled all the way through Bo Jangles this morning.

There's also:

'City of New Orleans' -Arlo Guthrie
'Ode To Billie Jo' - Bobbie Gentry
'The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia' - Vickie Lawrence
'Me and Bobby McGee' - Janis Joplin

... and a whole host of others in that vein.

And if you want to go into Jazz, well ... that opens up an entire new galaxy.

From Big Band style Glenn Miller (mentioned above), you go to Artie Shaw, Charlie Barnett, The Dorsey Brothers, Benny Goodman and dozens of others.

Moving to later years, you get to Stan Kenton, Oscar Peterson, Cedar Walton, Bob James, Earl Klugh, Doc Severinson, Noel Pointer, Jean Luc Ponty, Maynard Ferguson, Count Basie, Dave Brubeck, Chuck Mangione .... The list there is almost endless.

Then into fusion Jazz, with Pat Metheny, Oregon, etc.
