Plagiarism on Amazon

I practice ignorance is bliss. I don't google pieces of my stories to see where they are because that is a sure fire way to drive yourself nuts.

Lit is the biggest erotic grocery store in the world for thieves. Its a risk we assume when we post here.

What you say is completely true, Lovecraft, and yet if everyone took that attitude, thieves like this would continue to profit off of our unpaid work.

So I'm glad some people are being vigilant about this. And I hope thieves like this have their profits curtailed enough to discourage them.

Count me as one of the vigilant. The following review has been posted on the "Ron Mexico" stories listed. I have also contacted a number of Lit members whose stories were used and they are taking action. The review:

Here's the rundown on Ron Mexico's "Creations":
They're all stolen from Literotica.com
Notice that they all became available in the past few months.

If you want to read any of these stories for free, Google any sentence from the free sample, word for word (though some character names may be changed) followed by site:literotica.com.

For instance, I peeked at "Submissive Slut 101" and then Googled the following:
You know I love it when you make me wear the butt plug site:literotica.com

There I found the story "Slut Training 101" posted by MichaelinChina in 2012

Here are some other results:

"Submission of a Defiant Female Lawyer" is cut-and-paste of "The Pet" posted by MasteratPlay in 2012.
"Mistress and Her Slaves" is a cut-and-paste of "Slut Sisters Say Hello" posted by Nellie_Kay in 2012.

"Naughty Natalie" is a cut-and-paste of Naughty Naomi posted by toocold in 2014 and Jan 2015

I've reviewed every title listed above in this way, and I've barely put a dent in his list of stories for sale.

BTW, Where do they get the cover photos for these ebooks?

Quite the Prolific Plagiarist

Thirty reviews done, but still not halfway through "Ron Mexico's" offerings on Amazon.com. All taken from here. Mostly BDSM with some Lesbian, NonCon, and Gay Male.

These are the Lit members affected so far:

MasteratPlay, Nellie_Kay, patientlee, slutnikkinyc, LustyLucifer (at least twice), MrsStealyoMan24, HungExecutive, OverlordEternal, mindingutter, excearulo, Dayze, seat542, slutty_jannelle, Norarc, Anyport, egirl1212, empty_coffee_cup, toocold, hotmetalman, Dmnoid, SweetPrettyAss, TheHiddenPen, audreyblack, dawn1958, blondesubmission, soccermomcheryl, and indianmotherfucker.

Pretty sure all of the above are also on Santa's naughty list.

Good work Combat323!

Each of your reviews are also showing up on the Amazon.co.uk pages as the "Most helpful customer reviews from Amazon.com". Which is nice.

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback. I feel a bit like I've put more work into reviewing Ron Mexico's stolen goods than he put into "creating" them.

Yup that's the way it goes sometimes, it was like that when I helped track down Turners stolen stories last year

I went to Amazon.com and did a search for Ron Mexico. Every title I've seen so far has a one-star rating and your review beneath it, Combat. I've also noticed a few "+1s" next to most of them.

Good job.

Thanks. I hope it's enough to dissuade buyers until Amazon boots him off.

So far it looks like no one has bought any of these Ron Mexico ripoffs. Hope it stays that way.

I went the route of contacting create space, sent an e-mail to the woman who has handled a couple of books for me.

I sent her the link to "Transformed" along with the lit link.

I doubt it will do any good, after all amazon owns create space, but can't hurt.

Better than nothing, I say.

Three of the Lit members I have contacted about their stories being sold by Ron Mexico have indicated that they were sending DMCA complaints to Amazon. I'm not sure how many it takes to get someone taken off their site. One thing's for sure: Thirty reviews about how the stories are stolen doesn't get Amazon's attention.

Oh, in the paid market it is worth pursuing, I'm talking about all the free sites that take our stories.

yet they will routinely erase 5 star reviews from indy authors because they think they were put there by the author or their family/friends:rolleyes:

Ron Mexico's unreviewed stories have moved up in the search results for his name on Amazon.com. Yesterday, all of the ebooks on the first two pages of search results had one of my 1-star reviews. Now, there are 18 unreviewed ebooks on the first two pages, so Amazon is actually doing him a favor, though I'm sure it's something built into their software.

The git's still publishing them. Look at the dates of publication - May 1st and May 2nd. It seems to be a never ending stream of cut and paste jobs.

Ah, you're right. He has to have seen the reviews, I would think. I wonder if he has the required permissions for his cover photos? You know he's not using his own images, because he doesn't use his own anything.

I'm thinking Amazon is purposely ignorant on these things. It's just too damned easy to check for stolen stories.

Damn straight.....this is a reply I got from SW last week from my other thread about a thief...

Thanks for reporting this book, I know this guy too well. I've closed his accounts around fifty times now. Twice this weekend alone. He posts his stolen stories for free with the same covers and content and bio text, in fact this weekend I found the author's bio he copied his from. The guy is an English as a second language person as you can see in the text he wrote himself at the end of the books. He then sends people to a website where he sells part 2 of the stories.

He has been helping us try out filtering schemes, though. But he is a rash that keeps coming back. Part of my daily routine is to check for him 2-3 times a day. I sometimes wait for him to upload the 5 or 6 books and then close the account. I hope that the more work I make for him, he'll consider going away. I haven't notified Amazon yet, he sells different stories there, If they have samples, I would download one and do a text string search on it and unsurprisingly, it will be lifted from Literotica. Amazon doesn't seem to do anything until someone complains to them. The stories at Amazon are different (I think?) from the ones he posts to Smashwords, so I'd have to be able to read the text in order to do a web search.

I'm going to be closing another account today, another person with around a hundred books. I thought it might be that crazy woman who edited stories for people, but this guy doesn't even change the names in the stories, just their titles.

All the posters at Literotica should be aware that their work is frequently stolen and they should set up searches on text strings from the beginnings of their stories. The book samples that Smashwords makes available get crawled by the search engines and that makes it easy to track them down.

So, whe
n "Colin Hobbs" shows up again, and he will, know that we are watching him.

They know the guy...they are always watching and note the part about the new filtering schemes, you are not telling me they have better technology than amazon. Fact is amazon gets their 30% no matter what and if they do have to cancel an account they pocket all the money.

Reasons why I like doing business with Smashwords ^^^.

It's a great job, but a shame he has to do it, one e-mail to amazon with links to Mexico's stories with matching lit links under it should ban this guy, but they play "well are you the author?"

Laurel could shut him down because as she owns lit she is technically the publisher, but I think Manu's thread means we are on our own as to how to deal with it.

Maybe its time for another change.org petition titled "stop amazon from enabling and profiting from stolen stories"

As many of mine are being stolen from Lush as from here of late.

Doing a few full-line searches ( since I'm not getting any writing done right now ) the only oddity I came across was a Christian radio station using large amounts of my text from numerous stories as hidden text on their lame-assed site.

There's some Christian values for you -- theft in the name of the lord.

Anyone have something published to Smashwords I can search from Google, to see how well it's showing up in full-line search results? It would be nice to have at least one paid venue that could be searched for stolen stuff. You can't even find erotica on Amazon that you know is there :p

That's because amazon has all the erotica buried and what they do 'allow' to pop us is the books by authors who enrolled in kindle unlimited(meaning they have agreed to publish exclusively on amazon) so they get put ahead of others in the searches, but even with KU if its erotica...

Since kindle unlimited came out my sales there are about a third of what they used to be.

However in the last few months I have noticed a large increase on my sales from B/N smashwords main site and google. I had someone contact me through lit that they bought a couple of my books and as we back and forthed they mentioned they used to get all their erotica on amazon, but they got sick of trying to find their favorite authors and type of material.

I hope this keeps happening.

Just did a little more digging on that Christian radio site, and it looks like what happened is that they were hacked in the recent past to have a huge block of text from Lush's front page ( the first few lines of many stories all mashed together alone with a bunch of porn keywords ) and a slew of porn links attached to the top of their page. The hacked versions are still in the Google cache.

Used a couple of your Smashwords books as search samples, LC, and they all come up in Google, so at least anyone horking stories and publishing them on Smashwords can be located this way.

Amazon is finally getting on the ball!!!

Just not in the way we'd want.... Here's what arrived in my email after my last ten reviews (and there were no url's in my reviews):
Thanks for submitting a customer review on Amazon. Your review could not be posted to the website in its current form. While we appreciate your time and comments, reviews must adhere to the following guidelines:
http://www.amazon.com/review-guidelines

We encourage you to revise your review and submit it again. A few common issues to keep in mind:

Your review should focus on specific features of the product and your experience with it. Feedback on the seller or your shipment experience should be provided at www.amazon.com/feedback.

We do not allow profane or obscene content. This applies to adult products too.
Advertisements, promotional material or repeated posts that make the same point excessively are considered spam.

Please do not include URLs external to Amazon or personally identifiable content in your review.

We welcome your honest opinion about products - positive or negative. We do not remove reviews because they are critical. We believe all helpful information can inform our customers’ buying decisions. If you have questions about the product or opinions that do not fit the review format, please feel free to use the Customer Discussions feature on the product page.

At first I thought it was just a matter of their software seeing a repeated review as possible spam. Then I went to the customer discussion section on the product page and discovered that if I used the words "stolen" "plagiarist" or "literotica," my comments wouldn't post. I guess those are now keywords associated with my user account and filtered from my reviews; so Ron Mexico can cut, paste, and sell all the stories he can steal, but I'm not allowed to cut and paste in my efforts to thwart this criminal.

I tried the feedback option, but to use that, I'd actually have to buy the product. It makes me so angry, I've actually started using emogees.
