I kind of hate the rating system anyway, because it makes an excellent excuse for lazy parents to be lazy, but the idea that people will turn a perfectly good sex scene into a rape because rape is rated lower is just plain fucked up. It doesn't matter that it's not an automatic "R" it's the fact that enjoying sex is automatically rated at least a step higher than being taken advantage of. That's the fucked up part. The fact that there's a noticeable gender bias in sex scenes by the mpaa. That's the fucked up part.

Of course this has all gotten away from the whole lack of gblt representation in media. The media is just all kinds of fucked up.

Yeah, I call bullshit that the girls can't look like their into it or rape rates lower. They can makes those claims all they want it's still bullshit.

I think parents have a right to be lazy, that's what makes the rating system being so fucked up totally unforgivable, and worse in video games I might add. If my kids (or realistically for me my nieces and nephews) are being baby sat I should be able to glance at the rating for a game/show/movie read the synopsis and have a pretty good idea of what's going to be in it. That's the true issue here because nobody watches everything, they're aren't enough hours in the day for that.

i am seconding for the general and troubling lack of anyone other than hetero white cisgendered and standardly abled people in the media. representation is so much more important than people think because it's taken for granted by the over represented groups. also representation doesn't have to over sell the fact that the person gay, asian, black, or whatever.

when there is a show with a queer person of color or a disabled person and they are displayed as a normal human doing day to day stuff, holla at me.

But there's no reason to go out of your way to erase gay characters. There's no reason that Sailor Uranus & Neptune needed to be motherfucking cousins, for example.

There's no reason that everybody needs to be white either. I'm so fucking sick of white people. Like you read a book that doesn't specifiy race for the main character; they'll still cast somebody white. Like I read all the Harry Potter books and totally thought that Hermione was black; with natural hair and shit, before they made the movies. And I'm cool with Hermione, just using that as an example. It really does seem like producers go out of their way to cast white folk.

What happened to Sailor Uranus and Neptune was and is bullshit, but lets not pretend that's the only thing in anime that gets consistently editted in an attempt to make it a kid friendly. I'm not defending it, I'm saying in Dragon Ball nobody says "die" they talk about sending you to another dimension. Which considering in DBZ the other dimension is a place you can actually travel too. . .all of kid Goku and Gohan's nudity is editted out and for the most part there's is completely non sexual, it's just that kids of four and five sometimes take off their cloths and run around. No, it is automatic. You claim to work in, or know people who work in the industry. You get a rating, "automatically", you are then given the opportunity to edit your work and get a different rating. The only example, I know of, of someone talking the rating folk down without doing some sever editing was Kevin Smith over his shit monster. But as far as the orgasm thing, the MPAA and the FCC will tell you, themselves, that they rate male and female orgasms and sexuality differently. The female orgasm is /automatically/ rated R, the male is /automatically/ rated PG13. To get the female rated down, you have to edit, to get the male rated up you have to edit.

You'd be amazed at the backlash Bob's Burgers got over Tina when they decided to change the character to a female and keep the same script. There are HOURS of unused Tina footage because of the censors- but you can hear a lot of it on tumblr, and it's pretty funny. I used this example because in the pilot episode and much of the first season scripts, Tina was a male character named Dan. The exact same dialog that was admissible by Dan under the FCC, was forced to be edited for Tina. The ONLY difference was the gender of the character.

And equating someone's sexuality with sending a character to Hell or child nudity is... just kinda rude. That's not the same thing. At all.

omg avatar the last airbender is a very frustrating example of this, in particular because the show displays them as not white at all. i'm pretty sure no one in the avatar universe is white, yet the live action movie had all white people, and then people of color as the bad guys (it's also a shitty movie so there's that too)

I never watched that but yeah, I heard the whitewashing was the least of it's problems.

Edit: It sucks too, because I loved that show. Not liking Korra as much and I'm not sure why.

Bobs Burgers is atrocious, how that show manages to keep from getting everybody involved with it horribly axe murders is beyond me but probably has to do with Archer being a damn fine show.

It is pretty much exactly the same thing. They are things that have been deemed to be inappropriate for certain audiences. The fact that you don't like the comparison when it's perfectly apt isn't the point. That's your own emotions getting in the way of being objective.

The problem here isn't just the white washing, it's the complete flip of race. The Fire Nation have a fair amount of people who look "white." Ty Lee definitely looks white, Zuko and Azula don't look white only because you know they aren't not because you'd ever question it under normal circumstances. So how they came out looking Indian. . .nobody is at all sure.

White washing is a huge issue and that movie was a great example especially of why would you do this? What possible reason could you have for flipping the races around?

Bob's Burgers is awesome; but I think that it might be a 'you have to be around kids a lot' thing. Because 99% of why I love it is those kids put me in mind of kids I teach. I don't really like any of the adult characters. Linda annoys the shit out of me. But I love the chick who does Louis's voice; her standup and everything is great.

I know that you're just missing an essential component of why child nudity and consenting homosexual relationships aren't the same thing, but it's the exact same thing you were missing when I tried to explain to you what was wrong with the censors not allowing Marciline and Bubblegum to be together, so I can totally just chaulk that up to you having some kind of mental block instead of trying to explain the same thing over and over and annoying both of us.

That whitewashing this is really annoying; but like I said, I never watched the Avatar movie because I heard that it just sucked altogether. But what's also super weird about it is when you have a POC character, like FUCKING TIGERLILLY (since the tribal council is trying to get us to hate the new Peter Pan, that's a good example) and they cast a white chick, you see all these comments where people are all, "Well, whatcha gonna do. Use your imagination! Natives look white anyway!" But then we can contrast that with the new Annie and people are all, "Black Annie! Heresy! WTF?" When Tigerlilly HAS a cannon race and Annie DOESN'T. Shit like that annoys the hell out of me.

Speaking of the tribal council and movies and Avatar. The other avatar- the one with the blue cats. That's something else that Hollywood is bad for with their "White Savior Complex". I mean, that movie was a thinly veiled comparison of my people (who have a clan called "The Blue Cat") being forced out of their land for unobtanium (coal). There are tons of other native steriotypes, but that's the basic story. Now, if this movie were being made by natives, the princess would have been the one to save her people. But no, it's the random white guy who wasn't even there. And half the tribe is like, "BUT HE DOESN'T EVEN GO HERE!" And shit like that is... annoying.

But I watched the hell out of that movie. I like it anyway, so I'm a giant hypocrite. And I will say that half the reason I watched it is because everyone hated it so much without seeing it. And when I watched it, I could totally see what they were talking about, and yeah it was horrible, and an atrocity to my people, but FUCKING DRAGONS, and GIANT SPACE CATS and I just love SciFi. So. Yeah. Annoying, but still a good movie.
