Wheel Challenge: What about Time?

Well folks, spring is right around the corner, and this weekend was the spring forward time change for at least some of us. Therefore it seems a bit timely for this challenge to be all about time.

Please challenge yourself to write about the concept of time - how time slips, how time changes things, how precious time is...

Rules of the challenge.....
  • 10- 60 lines
  • Any poetic form you choose.
  • Today is Tuesday, this challenge will last until this coming Sunday midnight, your local time, honor system as always.
  • Last one in has the privilege, should they accept it, to start the next challenge thread, choose the title and determine conditions.
  • If you are outside the deadline, post anyway (show us what ya got!)

****************************************

Additionally, if you are new to this challenge series, please visit the previous installments to read or post your own poetic interpretation.
Of course, anyone can jump right in at any point.

Not eligible:

I wrote this one for the Parody Thread but it is only 8 lines.

Even such is time, that takes in trust

Our desire, our longing for sex to have,

And leave us all with lack of lust;

Who, in the aged response to love,

When we have wasted all our days,

Seals up the springs of our ways

But from this lack, this decline and rust,

Viagra shall raise me up, I trust.

Apologies to Sir Walter Raleigh.

I have known you fifteen years,
friends, not even close at that.
I'm not quite sure why it was
we took the time to sit and chat.

Friends, not even close at that,
maybe the gods made stars align,
something, somewhere saw a need
and love stepped in and made you mine

I'm not quite sure why it was
that we should even strike a spark,
for I was low and lay in pain,
you brought a rainbow to my dark.

We took the time to sit and chat,
my heart took over, soared and flew
to a place I've never been before.
The spark aflame, burns strong for you.

Thank you, the last stanza doesn't seem right to me somehow, but at the moment I can't see what to do with it.

Another clock added to the wall
ticking
photos punch in the time cards
day one
no nuances
thinking is pared back to the essentials
food
Warmth
Shelter
touch

philosophy, gender, politics, all nothing more than
a cry of instinct

potential waits
somewhere in the tick of a clock
hours that will eventually
turn

Her frame was withered, shrunken
and hands spotted with age,
but she still watched me
as I surveyed the room.
It looked like an old fashioned junk shop,
with things piled on top of other
unidentifiable objects. Piles of papers
about to collapse and slide across the floor
to join the rest of the rubbish
loitering under the table.
Where to start? It was a house of memories.
You could feel them in the walls,
from when he carried her
across the threshold on their wedding day,
to the shrill laughter of children at play.
Now she waited.

With all gone that was dear to her,
lost to the ravages of time,
she was already letting life go.

Time Enough

Shines brighter than diamonds and gold
And I give it all away so freely
My time spent here with you all
Writing poetry few will see
Or know that I even do

My time so often spent with my family
Little do they know how little we all have
Always reaching for more
It is my pleasure to give
Can they not see that?

My friends, my coworkers, strangers
Church, charity, lovers, and sometimes me
I have time for you all, freely given
And yet so precious and rare
How worthy you all must be

And how worthy am I
That you should spend your time with me
I pray that it is so
That I have brought a smile
Some laughter, love, thoughtfulness
Enrichment, growth, fellowship,
Camaraderie, hope, and honor

I assure you dearest
Your time is not wasted on me
Thank you with all the grace that is mine
For sharing your time with me
In my heart, that is eternal

time counts

Make your time count
Each and every moment
As you wind through the seasons
And the years

Spend time with me
Holding hands
Your soul meeting mine
Words revealing truths

Toes tap in time
Roll back the rug
As the record spins
Turn me ‘round again

Time slips away
More precious than gold
My gift to you
Given without expectation

Once upon a time
There was a girl
Who knew the value
Of every moment

Question

So... by my count we have just completed 19 weeks of the challenge originally started by the great HarryHill. The last few challenge threads were a bit thin in participation and I am wondering why.

So... before I start another thread or award this challenge to someone else, perhaps it is time to take a few moments to evaluate where we are with this project.

Poets... please consider and respond to the following questions:

1) Do you want to continue with this challenge format or does it feel like it has run it's course?

2) If we want to continue with this challenge format, I would suggest that we each attempt to recruit at least one other person into our merry band so we grow this enterprise. Does that seem possible? Doable? Desirable?

3) We have been typically setting these challenges to run for 5-7 days. Is that long enough? Would it be easier to participate if the challenge period was 12-14 days? (I would note that oggs challenge that ran 2 weeks did not have more participation than the threads running concurrently for 5-7 days.)

Are there other questions worth considering now? If so, toss them out.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Yes, cascadiabound, after a while it's good to take a step back, to view the situation from distance.

One may have a look at:

WickedEve had offered an image, and 7 Voices had responded (with 8 poems). (Possibly(?), there were more poems, I don't remember).

Eve's idea was nice, you can see why. There are other ways too to get (hopefully) a meaningful united collection.

As you've seen, I avoided giving general advice. Now, too, let me propose something concrete. One may select one of the items of:

(and another item on another occasion, etc). The selected device (or Term) should be applied in your poem intensively but without turning your text into a circus -- no need to set up any records. Once again, the poems which answer the challenge would (hopefully) form together a harmonious total.

cascadia for me, i enjoy the challenges but only feel the inspiration to write for some. that's no reflection on the author of the challenge, just a statement about how i write - or don't.

whilst it's a wonderful idea to recruit more participants, i'm not sure how practical that is for some of us.

i also think that limited feedback on the entries, in the various forms of praise/critique/observation, makes this kind of challenge less appealing to some writers. i'm guilty of not offering responses as much as the next, where i did used to make a whole lot more time to read, think, and offer an opinion. i find life just eats into my time too much most the time. perhaps ... just an idea ... perhaps whoever authors a challenge should try and make the effort to comment in some way on each entry. this may encourage more to join in with their own opinions, and this would inspire more participants. maybe.

If we call it a day and don't do this anymore we'll just slump back into doing nothing again and Harry's attempt to get poets to actually write will all have been in vain. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I am not actually looking to quit. I was noticing some trends which made me think it might be time to re-evaluate and it appears that there are some excellent suggestions we might do well to consider above.

I did not want these challenges to just die a fizzled death without considering what we are doing here. Seemed like a conversation might be in order.

I am particularly interested in hearing from HarryHill as the progenitor of this particular challenge iteration

Do you have any thoughts about the questions I posed? Would a longer time period work better for you? Would you consider the idea of recruiting more folks into the pool doable or desirable?

I'm looking forward to continuing. I've already tried to recruit at least one other person and encourage at least one other to break out of his consistent one track mind.

It would be better if we don't have any more arbitrary hijackings of the Challenge Threads.

I think it's a good idea to get a feel for where we all are with it. It's been enjoyable overall.

Good job Cassie.

The following idea worked very well in the golden age (1990-1991) of the Internet poetry, at rec.arts.poems, when there was a reasonable upper limit on the numbers of lines of an entry. However, any participant could present more than one poem. And that's what was happening.

The point is that two or three participants would independently collect poems received by all participants so that we would have 2 or 3 collections of the same poems but the total collections would have three different order compositions. Thus we would have 2 or 3 editors.

A well-composed collection has a value clearly greater than the sum of the isolated poems. I had people composing some collections of my poems. Each collection has the added value contributed by the editor. You'd have even a hard time to recognize that the poems were by the same poet. True, these editors selected different poems. Nevertheless, there is a stamp of the editor on the collection.

Each of the 2 or 3 editors would continuously update their page. It'd be great fun to see the poems together rather than each on a separate page, ESPECIALLY when the challenge is well selected.

The limit on the length of a poem could be, say, 8 lines (or just 6?).

**************

BTW, Eve's collection had 7 Voices but 8 poems, i.e. she selected 2 poems by one of the participants.

If others prefer a longer time slot I'm ok with that although personally I prefer changing it weekly.
As for recruiting I can go into Uggs thread and try to tempt them in but I've asked before and had no takers. Perhaps those that make more use of the GB can try there.
I would beware of any complicated suggestions undoable with such a small pool of writers, which are more likely to drive poets away (myself included) than recruit any new ones.

I would like to continue to discuss how we might best go forward, especially as there are several regular poets we have not heard from yet.

In the meantime, I award THIS challenge to Mr T as it was never my intention to be the last poster on my own challenge. Perhaps he might see fit to incorporate some of the above ideas or feedback into the next challenge.
