Is The Draft Coming Back?

The draft boards are looking for new members. They haven't done that since we actually had a draft during Viet Nam.

Beware Bush.

You can beware Bush all you want, but Congress must approve reviving the draft, and that's not going to happen. There are plenty of volunteers.
So tell me, why do you think Bush wants to bring back the draft?

Grinders need meat.

Ther are 140,000 active-duty, reserve and National Guard soldiers currently deployed in Iraq.

The total enlistment goal for active Army and Army reserves was 100,000. If half of the 140,000 troops currently in Iraq were to go home and stay, two-thirds of this year's recruits would be needed to replace them.

And that does not take into consideration military needs at home and around the globe.

God, I'm glad I'm almost 33. I wonder how old you have to be to not be drafted?

The draft is yet another reason why I hope I NEVER have a son. I'd hate for him to have to flee the country because the Government decided to send him off to war against his will.

The draft produced inferior soliders, a poor chain of command and an ambiguous command structure, and the State Dept. knows that. The draft will never come back.

Oh, I see. You need no facts to back up your paranoia.
No surprise there.

That implies reasoning and a detail to history that has not been sufficiently demonstrated by the current administration.

I'm not saying that the draft will be back this election cycle. But a Bush win and further involvement in Iraq might make the whole thing a no-brainer.

A double post just for your dumb ass:

And a painful look at reality for your dumb ass. U.S. forces are stretched thin, but there has been no action taken, or any request made, to increase the number of members of the armed forces.
Fact is, those who are volunteering now for the military can't just walk in, sign up, and be shipped off for training. Last I heard, it took about two months after someone enlisted up to actually go on active duty.
You can whine about Bush all you want, but the fact is there is no movement to bring back the draft.
Dumb ass.

That implies any administration has more power than it does.

Way to avoid the simple math and numbers I posted.

You're an idiot for not reading thoroughly.

Not enough troops, not enough recruits, too many Reservists and National Guardsmen.

Salon did an article on the issue this week.

Not since the early days of the Reagan administration in 1981 has the Defense Department made a push to fill all 10,350 draft board positions and 11,070 appeals board slots. Recognizing that even the mention of a draft in the months before an election might be politically explosive, the Pentagon last week was adamant that the drive to staff up the draft boards is not a portent of things to come. There is "no contingency plan" to ask Congress to reinstate the draft, John Winkler, the Pentagon's deputy assistant secretary for reserve affairs, told Salon last week.

Remember, just because there is "no contigency" doesn't mean it won't happen.

Pay attention to what the government does, not what it says.

Not yet. You're being very short sighted.

I hope you never have a chickenshit son either. I hope if you do, the gutless son of a bitch gets his god damned head blown off for being a draft dodger.

Tell me you'd gladly see your son forcibly sent to war via the draft and then I'll take that remark seriously.

You're the one worried about getting drafted at age 32 so you will be stripped of your freedom to post in a porn board every single day rather than fight for your country.

Then you had the audacity to admit that you never want a son because you don't want him to FLEE the country rather than be drafted and forcibly sent to war.

Like I said, you're a pussy.

It would be ironic as fuck if the men in your family got called away on the draft and all came back in body bags. Sad and horrible, but still ironic.

But I bet you're hella glad you can't be drafted, ain't ya? Don't you even start to lecture me about cowardice, ye who are safe and secure from ever being dragged off to war against your will.

Is there any consideration for the theory that current economic structures and potential of further tax class disparity will help ensure a steady supply of volunteers?

Might just be a coincidence, but the massive debt is mounting and combined with tax cuts that hurt state and local governments, the service will continue to be the only way out for many young people.

Oh really? Now two can play this game.

It would be ironic - and also funny as fuck - if you were to get drafted and dragged off to war, taken prisoner, tortured by some middle eastern maniac's troops, and your balls ripped out before they finally slit you a new smile from ear to ear.

You'd be getting exactly what you wish for... and everything that comes with it.

What a pathetic cunt you are, and a piss poor example to a kid if you ever did have one. If prior generations had shared your sentiments, this country wouldn't exist.

Why would your son's blood be any more valuable than the soldiers that have died on the battlefield over history? Do you think they wanted to be killed? Or maybe you think their parents wanted to willingly send them off to their death.

Fucking pathetic

[edited to take myself OFF this argument......read it wrong]
