Arrow 2006 News & Views: Discussion and Announcements for the Survivorphile

Current News and Announcements:

Hello, Survivorphiles, and welcome to the 2006 Survivor Literotica Contest. We hope this will be an enjoyable year-long challenge for all contestants, regardless of final classification.

You will notice there haven't been many changes to the rules introduced this time - 2005 Survivor went rather smoothly - but there are a few slight modifications to which we must call your attention:

Illustrated stories and poems - It's not exactly a change, but a clarification to the rules. It has now been added that "The use of the same illustration in more than one submission will render all said submissions after the first ineligible for points." The reason for this is obvious. All submissions must be original and unique, in their entirety.

And again, the following still applies this year: The use of images in the production of which the contestant was not directly involved, either by creating or by being portrayed in them, will make submissions in the "Illustrated" and "Illustrated Poetry" categories ineligible for points in Survivor. That means that you can use photographs that you yourself took or that were taken of you, or paintings or drawings that you yourself created. It also means that you cannot use royalty-free or public domain images, or images pulled from somewhere off the web.

Immunities - At the end of the year, all immunities claimed will be considered valid, as long as there are two categories filled with regular submissions for each immunity. e.g.: If a contestant has 7 immunities won, but has only regular submissions in 12 different categories, only the first 6 immunities will be considered valid.

The purpose of this change, of course, is to encourage contestants to write in as many different categories as possible, as is the stated goal of Survivor, and not to overly depend on immunities.

There were concerns expressed about multichapter stories and about the quality of some submissions. Once again we must remind all contestants that the only quality control in place is Laurel at the moment of approval of the submissions. If you read a story that cannot be understood without reading the others in the series, if it doesn't make sense on its own, or if it doesn't correspond, on its own, to the minimum that can be expected for the category it is placed in, please report the story. If you think that any story you read in Literotica is substandard, please report the story. Let Laurel know about it. That's the only way a quality control can be implemented.

The 2006 Survivor Literotica Contest: Rules and Registration thread and the January Immunities thread are already posted and you can sign up immediately. To avoid confusion, we'll put creation new ScoreCards on hold until 2005 winners are announced on the 5th and all the mess is cleared, but we'll put them up right after that.

Good luck to all!

Like I said on the post above, probably tomorrow, after 2005 winners are announced and the old ScoreCards are put away.

I could use a clarification of this:

There were concerns expressed about multichapter stories and about the quality of some submissions. Once again we must remind all contestants that the only quality control in place is Laurel at the moment of approval of the submissions. If you read a story that cannot be understood without reading the others in the series, if it doesn't make sense on its own, or if it doesn't correspond, on its own, to the minimum that can be expected for the category it is placed in, please report the story. If you think that any story you read in Literotica is substandard, please report the story. Let Laurel know about it. That's the only way a quality control can be implemented.

In regards to myself, I have a novel in progress. It is about half done and will be about 60,000 words, split into at least ten chapters, which will be numbered as such. The chapters are not intended to be stand-alone stories. Characters will be introduced and, hopefully, developed in early chapters and referenced later without further development or description. I hope I can count each chapter as an entry.

I think you summed up pretty well what's the difference between Novels&Novellas' entries and those of other regular categories. Obviously, the standalone part doesn't apply to Novel chapters.

Good luck to everyone participating in the contest this year.

I have offered my help (already talked to Laurel in PM) with MODing for the contest this year and per the rules that makes me ineligible to participate.

So good luck to all of the 'mad-writers'.

Hello, Survivorphiles! As of right now, both the Survivor FAQ and the Chain Stories Directory threads are updated for 2006. If you notice anything out of place, if you have any question to add to the FAQ or any data relevant to the Chain Stories Directory, please let me know and I'll correct it immediately.

Good luck!

Hello, Survivorphiles!

Some of you may have already noticed that there is a new name in the moderator's column of Survivor's forum. Starting today, Svenskaflicka will be co-moderating the 2006 edition with me, and will be available to answer any questions you may have about the contest.

Svenska has been a Survivor participant for the last four years, and in addition to the top-15 finish last year, she was runner-up twice in 2002 and 2003. This year she has decided not to enter the contest, but we're very pleased to have her on this side instead.

question

Hi, I was wondering how I update my score card. I've a few submissions that didn't make it onto my score card -- not that I expect to win with the all of the prolific writers.

If this info is elsewhere, please direct me to the right spot.

Thanks,
pagrl

Hi, Pagrl-

Like Boxlicker said, keeping scorecards updated is the responsibility of each contestant. You need to go to your scorecard (here) and press the "edit" button in order to add the titles to each category and corresponding points to the total. Let me know if you find any problem doing this.

Many people see Survivor as a challenge, to see if they can actually manage to write in all the different styles they normally don't dare to try.

It might be fun even if you have no chance to win the top prizes - and besides, we have many more smaller prizes now, which gives more people the chance to win a little glory!

But, ultimately, it's completely voluntarily (sp?) if anyone wants to join or not. If you're not in this year, we hope we'll have you with us next year!

This has been a blast for me. I'm having a lot of fun. Whether I turn out 1 pagers or 6 pagers... I don't care. I never thought I'd write Transexual. But by golly I did it. . . .I still have 3 more and I hope to get those soon... (That illustrated one is freakin' me though. ... ) I don't think I'll be in this next year, but who knows... I never thought I'd make money in the porn industry either, but I just might someday.

Hello, Survivorphiles!

We're reaching the half-way point of this year's contest, and what better time for some discussion? Are you pleased with the way Survivor has been going on for you until now? Do you have any complaints, ideas, or comments? Speak your mind.

Personally, I am very pleased with the contest this year. The overall number of submissions has been trailing last year's, but the number of participants keeps increasing, and the competitiveness is much greater now. All in all, i think that makes a much more fun experience for everyone.

I am also pleased with the clean approach that every contestant is having this year - at least we haven't had a single complaint of foul play. Well done!

I don't know how everything played out in the past, seeing as this was my first year entering. I can tell you I have had a lot of fun trying to write in categories I never would have wrote in or at least never thought I would write in. I've learned what I think are my strong points and I have learned what my weak points are. There are some genre's I'll never excel at, but I can say I have tried them all... (but one so-far. . .but I'll get it.)

I do have a question about illustrated stories or poems. I have a fan who likes to pose nude in front of her webcam. If I direct her to pose in a certain way, and she does, and I somehow freeze the pose and download it, would that be considered to be a pic that I had taken. This is for future reference more than for this year because I have already used an immunity for this year.

If I am able to do this, the pose would be provocative but not pornographic.

That's about as borderline as it gets! Good question. I'll have to check with Laurel to see what she thinks.

huh... good luck to you guys on that call!

I've enjoyed writing for survivor so far this year... totally thought I wouldn't do the whole "chapter writing" thing but now that I have, it's a blast! Even *I* am not sure where the story is going to go next... it's fun.

That said, aside from a few "flash fiction" kind of experiments on the boards, the whole 750 entry thing seems like a waste to me... a solid lit page at least, a good 2000-3000 words....feels about right...

I've written in every category but three now (gay male, crossdressing and illustrated) and it's been a challenge... I've pretty much already met and exceeded my original goal...

Finally, here is the answer. I apologise for the delay, it was much more my fault than Laurel's.

The situation you describe would be perfectly acceptable, but keep in mind that when you submit the illustration, you are implicitly certifying that the pictures were indeed created under your supervision, and not just something handed to you by someone else. If later it is discovered that this isn't true, it will be treated as a case of plagiarism, with all its usual consequences.

And about the pose, "provocative but not pornographic", as you say, would be the only way regardless of all else. Remember the guidelines for illustrations:
Legally, we can allow soft nudity in photographs, but under current United States law, photographs posted on this site may not contain "sexually explicit conduct", which the government defines as:

- Actual or simulated:
(A) sexual intercourse, including genital-genital, oral-genital, anal-genital, or oral-anal, whether between persons of the same or opposite sex;
(B) bestiality;
(C) masturbation;
(D) sadistic or masochistic abuse; or
(E) lascivious exhibition of the genitals or pubic area of any person.
