This idea came a little while ago, but only really came to fruition after a little think in Abstrusions.

Welcome to Lit Radio, the place where you choose the tunes. I'm TheEarl, your resident DJ. Pick a song to shout out what you're thinking, how you're feeling, where you are, who you'd like to thank. Say it with a song.

Our first song is Pure Morning by Placebo and it's dedicated to a good friend of mine, who has just been added to my very brief list of 'People who know about TheEarl.' A long and very entertaining conversation and one which I feel very enriched by.

What song shall we have on next and why?

A friend in need's a friend indeed,
A friend who'll tease is better,
Our thoughts compressed,
Which makes us blessed,
And makes for stormy weather

I forgot to mention - any Brits (Is Lou listening?) should feel free to tedious-link from one song to the next.

How about Wild Mountain Honey, by the Steve Miller Band? I love that song.

I'm in the mood for some 80's rock or pop. I'm thinking 'Just What I needed' by The Cars.

Great thread idea, by the way, Earl.

No-one else want to play?

Okay then, I choose Colourblind by Counting Crows just because it is the most relaxed song in the world. It is the early hours of the morning song.

Right now, I could use some Bob Marley. Redemption Song

Old pirates, yes, they rob i;
Sold I to the merchant ships,
Minutes after they took i
From the bottomless pit.
But my hand was made strong
By the ’and of the almighty.
We forward in this generation
Triumphantly.
Won’t you help to sing
These songs of freedom? -
’cause all I ever have:
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs.

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our minds.
Have no fear for atomic energy,
’cause none of them can stop the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look? ooh!
Some say it’s just a part of it:
We’ve got to fulfil de book.

Won’t you help to sing
These songs of freedom? -
’cause all I ever have:
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs;
Redemption songs.

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery;
None but ourselves can free our mind.
Wo! have no fear for atomic energy,
’cause none of them-a can-a stop-a the time.
How long shall they kill our prophets,
While we stand aside and look?
Yes, some say it’s just a part of it:

LUCKY.
you make me throb...so, because you cant be here to do a strip tease for me, im going to pop on some Feelin Love by paula cole and imagine that you are.
this ones for you...

I'm in a reflective type of mood.
They should have named this song, "To EK's Dad".

"Colors", by Crossfade.

Can you feel it crush you, does it seem to bring the worst in you out..
There's no running away from these things that hold you down..
Do they complicate you because they make you feel like this..
Of all the colors that you shine, this is surely not your best..

But you should know these colors that you're shining are...
Surely not the best, colors that you shine..
Surely not the best, colors that you shine..

I know you feel alone yeah, and no one else can figure you out..
But don't you ever turn away from the ones that help you down..
Well they'd love to save you, don't you know they love to see you smile..
But these colors that you've shined, are surely not your style..

But you should know these colors that you're shining are..
Surely not the best, colors that you shine..
Surely not the best, colors that you shine..

I know you're feeling like you're lost..
But you should know these colors that you're shining....
I know you're feeling like you're lost, you feel you've drifted way to far..

Did you know these colors that you’re shining are..
Surely not the best, colors that you shine.

You Make Lovin' Fun - Fleetwood Mac

Sweet wonderful you,
You make me happy with the things you do,
Oh, can it be so,
This feeling follows me wherever I go.

I never did believe in miracles,
But I've a feeling it's time to try.
I never did believe in the ways of magic,
But I'm beginning to wonder why.

Don't, don't break the spell,
It would be different and you know it will,
You, you make loving fun,
And I don't have to tell you you're the only one.

You make loving fun.
You make loving fun.

For all the demi electioneers feelin' low all today, I got somethin' that may feel a bit close to home.

Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd

Hello?
Is there anybody in there?
Just nod if you can hear me.
Is there anyone at home?
Come on, now,
I hear you're feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain
Get you on your feet again.
Relax.
I'll need some information first.
Just the basic facts.
Can you show me where it hurts?
There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying.
When I was a child I had a fever
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I've got that feeling once again
I can't explain you would not understand
This is not how I am.
I have become comfortably numb.
O.K.
Just a little pinprick.
There'll be no more aaaaaaaaah!
But you may feel a little sick.
Can you stand up?
I do believe it's working, good.
That'll keep you going through the show
Come on it's time to go.
There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying.
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown,
The dream is gone.
I have become comfortably numb.

After the reverential moment of silence, let me cheer you back up for life with:

Don't Worry About the Government by Talking Heads

I see the clouds that move across the sky
I see the wind that moves the clouds away
It moves the clouds over by the building
I pick the building that I want to live in
I smell the pine trees and the peaches in the woods
I see the pinecones that fall by the highway
That's the highway that goes to the building
I pick the building that I want to live in
It's over there, it's over there
My building has every convenience
It's gonna make life easy for me
It's gonna be easy to get things done
I will relax alone with my loved ones
Loved ones, loved ones visit the building,
take the highway, park and come up and see me
I'll be working, working but if you come visit
I'll put down what I'm doing, my friends are important
Don't you worry 'bout me
I wouldn't worry about me
Don't you worry 'bout me
Don't you worry 'bout me
I see the states, across this big nation
I see the laws made in Washington, D.C.
I think of the ones I consider my favorites
I think of the people that are working for me
Some civil servants are just like my loved ones
They work so hard and they try to be strong
I'm a lucky guy to live in my building
They own the buildings to help them along
It's over there, it's over there
My building has every convenience
It's gonna make life easy for me
It's gonna be easy to get things done
I will relax along with my loved ones
Loved ones, loved ones visit the building
Take the highway, park and come up and see me
I'll be working, working but if you come visit
I'll put down what I'm doing, my friends are important
I wouldn't worry 'bout
I wouldn't worry about me
Don't you worry 'bout me
Don't you worry 'bout ME..........

I am very into the latest turn of the singer/songwriter wheel right now, so how about one from one of the heirs of Jim Croce, Cat Stevens and Michael Penn...

John Mayer
Your Body Is A Wonderland

We got the afternoon
You got this room for two
One thing I've left to do
Discover me
Discovering you

One mile to every inch of
Your skin like porcelain
One pair of candy lips and
Your bubblegum tongue

And if you want love
We'll make it
Swimming a deep sea
Of blankets
Take all your big plans
And break 'em
This is bound to be a while

Your body Is a wonderland
Your body is a wonder
(I'll use my hands)
Your body Is a wonderland

Something 'bout the way your hair
falls in your face
I love the shape you take when crawling
towards the pillowcase
You tell me where to go and
Though I might leave to find it
I'll never let your head hit the bed
Without my hand behind it

You want love?
We'll make it
Swimming a deep sea
Of blankets
Take all your big plans
And break 'em
This is bound to be a while
Your body Is a wonderland
Your body is a wonder
(I'll use my hands)
Your body Is a wonderland

Damn baby
You frustrate me
I know you're mine all mine all mine
But you look so good it hurts sometimes

Your body Is a wonderland
Your body is a wonder
(I'll use my hands)
Your body is a wonderland
Your body Is a wonderland

TheEarl's tedious link

Mayer sounds like Mayor, which is the name of an English rugby player - Chris Mayor. Chris Mayor plays for Sale, as does Jason Robinson, who's a born again Christian. Christian Slater is currently starring in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, which is a play about mental problems. Tourettes is a mental problem and it often involves a lot of cursing, like the word fuck. Fuck is often written as F*ck, utilising the star symbol, which is used in computer science to represent multiplication. Multiplication is an important part of maths, as is the greek constant pi, after which the Bloodhound Gang named their song 3.14, although god only knows why.

Which brings us onto 3.14, by the Bloodhound Gang, in celebration of Lou's thread about getting back to sex.

Early bird gets the worm spread your legs or spread the word
So what if I'm not he smartest peanut in the turd
I'm white which goes with everything but I can come in any colour
And I'm looking for the kind of girl that reminds me of my mother
But it's hard to find a girl with a viper tattooed on her tushy
And how many girls do you know that can play the harmonica with their pussies?
Like em easy and hot and sweet like a Rice Krispy Treat, gee
You know what I really want in a girl?

Me.

Speaking on another thread I reminded myself of a classic recording by Billy Bragg, maybe you know it by the slightly altered version of Lars Frederickson from Rancid, the tune is To Have And Have Not, very political and quite apt in many States today

I often remind myself that "Just because you're better than me, doesn't mean I'm lazy."

To Have And Have Not

Up in the morning and out to school
Mother says there'll be no work next year
Qualifications once the Golden Rule
Are now just pieces of paper

Just because you're better than me
Doesn't mean I'm lazy
Just because you're going forwards
Doesn't mean I'm going backwards

If you look the part you'll get the job
In last year's trousers and your old school shoes
The truth is son, it's a buyer's market
They can afford to pick and choose

Just because you're better than me
Doesn't mean I'm lazy
Just because I dress like this
Doesn't mean I'm a communist

The factories are closing and the army's full -
I don't know what I'm going to do
But I've come to see in the Land of the Free
There's only a future for the Chosen Few

Just because you're better than me
Doesn't mean I'm lazy
Just because you're going forwards
Doesn't mean I'm going backwards

At twenty one you're on to of the scrapheap
At sixteen you were top of the class
All they taught you at school
Was how to be a good worker
The system has failed you, don't fail yourself

Just because you're better than me
Doesn't mean I'm lazy
Just because you're going forwards
Doesn't mean I'm going backwards

As segue to that (segway) parody of Billy Bragg by the comedian Bill Bailey (go here for great mp3 downloads.

"Unisex Chip Shop"

I used to buy my chips from an oppressive chip shop regime.
The girl who worked there, she seemed happy,
But I knew it was not what it seemed.

"Do you want salt and vinegar", was what they made her say,
But in the language of the ghetto,
That means, "Help, I'm a woman in chains"

I wanted to free her.
In my dreams I would see her.
Running naked through the woods round Rainham,
If I had some tigers I'd train them.
To protect her

From the sexual fascism that was lurking, round the gherkins
(yeah)

I'd lean across the counter and we would talk,
I carved the name "Debbie" on a little wooden fork.

But into the shop came a skinhead gang,
They snatched the fork from my hand.

Debbie, she looked at me, to assert my masculinity.
I said "Oi!", they said "What?", I said "Nothing..."

This morning I would like to hear History Repeating by The Propellorheads with Shirley Bassey on vocals.

Thenk yew.

Okay, I've decided I'm in a rut. And a funk.
But this song brings me sunshine. :)

"Hard Candy Christmas", Dolly Parton. :)

Hey, maybe I'll dye my hair
Maybe I'll move somewhere
Maybe I'll get a car
Maybe I'll drive so far
They'll all lose track
Me, I'll bounce right back
Maybe I'll sleep real late
Maybe I'll lose some weight
Maybe I'll clear my junk
Maybe I'll just get drunk on apple wine
Me, I'll be just...

Fine and dandy
Lord it's like a hard candy Christmas
I'm barely getting through tomorrow
But still I won't let
Sorrow bring me way down

Hey, maybe I'll learn to sew
Maybe I'll just lie low
Maybe I'll hit the bars
Maybe I'll count the stars until dawn
Me, I will go on

Maybe I'll settle down
Maybe I'll just leave town
Maybe I'll have some fun
Maybe I'll meet someone
And make him mine
Me, I'll be just...

Fine and dandy
Lord it's like a hard candy Christmas
I'm barely getting throung tomorrow
But still I won't let
Sorrow bring me way down

'Cause I'll be fine

Feeling happy-go-lucky today and I love to sing this song out loud in the car.

Sunrise by Nora Jones

Sunrise
Sunrise
Looks like morning in your eyes
But the clock's held 9:15 for hours

Sunrise
Sunrise
Couldn't tempt us if it tried
Cuz the afternoon's already come and gone

And I said
Hooo, hooo, hooo
To you

Surprise
Surprise
Couldn't find it in your eyes
But I'm sure it's written all over my face

Surprise
Surprise
Never something I could hide
When I see we made it through another day

Then I say
Hooo, hooo, hooo
To you

And now the night
Will throw its cover down, ooo, on me again
Ooh, and if I'm right
It's the only way to bring me back

Hooo, hooo, hooo
To you
Hooo, yeah, hooo, hooo
To you

How about some old Goo Goo Dolls? From back before they were ever on a movie soundtrack.

Two Days In February

I hung your picture on the wall…and that's all it is
I break my fingers to make a call…and that's all it is
I know you're living way out west and I don't think that I confessed
Everything I feel

You say you got no faith in things that you can't see
Well I'm sorry I ain't there with you, but you ain't here with me
And I'm down in all my fears
But I ain't cryin' no tears over you

'Cause everything's wrong
Well it's all right
Everything's wrong
Well it's all right

You said that this is crazy, you're a half a world away
Well I'm sitting and I'm thinking but I didn't know what to say
So I said something I can't touch, I always want way too much
Anyway…

'Cause everything's wrong
Well it's all right
Everything's wrong
Well it's all right

I hung your picture on the wall, but that's all it is
I break my fingers to make a call and that's all it is
I know you're living way out west
Don't get me wrong I'm not impressed
With you no more

Annie's Song by John Denver. Dedicated to the touching speech of congratulations that Teflon Tony made to GWB.

Come, let me love you.
Let me give my life to you,
Let me drown in your laughter,
Let me die in your arms,
Let me lay down beside you,
Let me always be with you,
Come, let me love you.
Come love me again.

<sniff> They make such a beautiful couple.
