As Anne and Jack are escorted into the manager’s office, Jack immediately recognizes his good friend.
“Hello Ian!” Jack shouts across the room.
“Welcome back Jack!” replies Ian as he walks over to his friend and shakes his hand while slapping Jack’s shoulder with his other hand.
Anne stands there stunned. “You two know each other?” she says while looking back and forth at the two men.
Remembering his manners, Jack turns toward Anne. “Anne, let me introduce you to Ian O’Connor, manager of this fine establishment. He and I have known each other for several years.” Then turning toward Ian he continues, “Ian, may I introduce you to Anne Gray, Vice President of Sales for Five Star Reservation Systems.”
“Pleased to meet you Ms. Gray.” Ian says while extending his hand in greeting to her. “I am glad you two accepted my invitation to come early and enjoy what we have to offer.”
“Likewise, pleased to meet you Mr. O’Connor. Thank you for the extended stay invitation. Jack and I look forward to a successful completion of our business AND having some fun.” With this last phrase, Anne tosses her red hair towards Jack and gives him a wink, a signal that does not go unnoticed by Ian.
“My friends just call me 'Ian', and I hope we become good friends real soon.”
Ian steps back a bit and takes a moment to study the beautiful redhead. Anne likewise takes the opportunity to check out the well tanned, handsome male in front of her. Jack watches both of them and smiles. He thinks that they becoming close friends could work to everyone’s benefit.
“Okay Ian, but only as long as you call me ‘Anne’.” She says, playing to the casual turn of the conversation.
“So, Anne, why did you bring along this crackerjack technician on a sales call?” nodding his head at Jack.
“Ian, you appear to be jumping ahead to Monday’s business. I will tell you that a technical expert, such as Jack, usually makes a great impression upon our potential clients. He gives them confidence in the technical superiority of our product and the quality of our client support.” After a pause she adds, “I have found him invaluable in many ways on our sales trips.”
Again she turns and winks at Jack who is practically blushing. Ian makes note, again, of their unspoken exchange.
Jack is purposely letting Anne and Ian get to know each other. He is observing how they interact, knowing that their newfound relationship could determine the business success of the trip. Jack is pleased how things are progressing.
Ian waves over the bellman who is still standing at the doorway. “Please take our special guests Ms. Gray and Mr. Reynolds and their luggage up to their rooms. I assume they are a bit weary from their long trip this morning.”
Facing Anne, Ian continues, “I look forward to getting to know you better, Anne.” Then looking directly into her eyes, "I want to make sure that you enjoy your stay here.”
Addressing his friend, “Jack, we need to spend some time catching up on the past year. Can you join me later?”
“Only if you bring one of your best bottles.” Jack replies with a grin, remembering some of their previous drinking experiences.
