In the current case, my demise = reports on Thursday the con artist had blinked and was going to lift or at least stop further tariffs on China. According to the con artist himself:

"Things are going very well with China and with trade," he said to reporters. "There were some false reports about sanctions being removed. We have taken in tremendous amounts of money into the United States because of the sanctions and we'll see how it goes. And if we make a deal, certainly we wouldn't have sanctions...,"

By tremendous amounts of money he means the $323.3 billion trade deficit with China, the largest in this country's history. By things are going well, he means the farmers he tried to curry favor with by handing over taxpayer money to bail them out because China isn't buying their goods.

In other words, the leaked comments by officials that Secretary Treasury Steve Mnuchin proposed lifting sanctions were fake. Or, to put it another way, they were market manipulation. A desperate attempt to prop up the stock market which plunged over 20% in the month of December and which has recently rallied on these fake reports.
