The Johnny's Seeds catalog came in today's mail.

It's always a bit frustrating to get this and realize we still have about 3 months before most things can go into the ground.

(I realize some of you have less, and some of you have more, and some of you have a lot more than 3 months to wait.)

It's a gorgeous catalog, though.

You can drill holes for the seed with your cordless drill.

There's no reason you can't plant now, and fill up your sunny window ledges with potted veggies. Then come Mother's Day you just toss the pot contents out the windows.

I went through a phase where I was getting all the seed catalogs, sketching up beds, memorizing plant names. Then I discovered that I killed everything I tried to plant. I don't have a single houseplant.

It's my fingers in the soil that I'm looking for. But, you're right... we probably have enough daylight now to get some lettuce, or even basil, to do its thing in a south-facing window.

You've inspired me to try and start some this week.

I've killed lots of plants, too. But gradually, eventually, finally you figure it out.

I'd encourage you to keep practicing.

My dad would be starting his sweet potatoes by now. There would be vines growing all over the place. He could make a pencil grow just by sticking it in the dirt. Neighbor kids would come over and pick pencils for school.

For a sec I thought this thread will be about Johnny's seeds, but then I looked at who started it.

I'll be starting tomatoes, bell peppers and some herbs indoors this week. :)

See, you've probably inherited super-growing skills, but just haven't uncovered them yet.

It's genetic.

Niiiiiice. Ah, to live in TX!

Do you have a favorite tomato? If I lived in TX I'd have herbs growing about year-round. We pretty much live on fresh basil and tomatoes around here during the summer.

The basil never survives the winter outside for me. :(

I really like the San Marzanos. Both for taste and for growing. It has a quite long season.

I enjoy my horticultural porn. Where I live we are planting the cool season stuff now and the summer stuff is planted in mid to late March.

We grow basil in the window.

I have very limited window space that's not accessible to the cats. They're extremely destructive. All our plants had to be moved to one room that's a no cat zone...

I've never grown veggies at all and only fliers and herbs from seeds. I think I should start with heirloom tomatoes, as none of my friends that share their home grown veggies with me grow heirlooms.

I know they're a fruit....shhhhhh

No, basil likes it hot, hot, hot!

You'd have to pull the pot inside when it got below freezing. I try that here, but our heating season is so long the dry air from the central heat kills them after a bit.

I've grown San Marzanos -- they make great sauces! And we also just like eating them off the vine. It's wonderful they are so prolific!

For better or worse (probably the former), most of what I've learned about Alaska I've learned from your thread.

I am soooo full of BS, mostly. But those are stairs off the climate change lab at Barrow.

You should visit before you get old.

Can you do this during the winter? I'd not think there was enough sunlight up there during the winter.

F-ing cats!!!

Those guys are the devil.
