You know when you have one of those deja vu moments?

The title of a story posted today rang one of those faint bells you sometimes find in your head. So I’ve just read what seems to be an exact copy of a story I read a long time ago. It’s not just a similar plot but, from memory, it’s a 100% copy and I’m wondering what is the correct thing to do in these circumstances. Do you send a pm to Laurel?

Whether or not the other stories they’ve posted recently are copies or not I’ve no idea. It could be that they have actually written the stories and that they’ve previously submitted them using a different pseudonym.

This person was posting stories under the name “yosiq” and in the course of 10 - 14 days posted about 8 including the one I read. The plot was quite simple which is probably why I remembered it. Shy girl gets revenge on narcissistic school bitch, who keeps belittling her, by fucking her boyfriend. There’s only so many ways you can tell a story.

He/she was getting very good ⭐️‘s probably because they were cherry picking the best stories. What satisfaction does anyone get from it? I can understand the person who steals chunks from an existing story to insert into their own tale but simply copy and paste? Probably someone who also deliberately gives one ⭐️‘s and writes insulting comments as Mr or Mrs Anonymous.

Anyway it’s nice to see that admin acted so very quickly after I reported it. 👍

It never surprises me people steal stories, but it does surprise me when they re-post them to the same site the original was on. Stealing is wrong period of course, but at least lifting them from lit and posting them somewhere else there's a chance you get away with it.

Lifting and putting it right back here proves stupidity to go along with being a sleazy thief.

In the last two years I've had two taken and posted word for word including the same title. Both times it was readers who were nice enough to contact me to let me know and also reported the story. Laurel took them both down quickly.
 
In the day of search engines plagiarism is soooooo dumb and easy to catch. Like 15 years ago I did some "pro bono" music writing for a website. I was reading a review of an album I also had reviewed on another site and found some of my own language had been lifted!

I emailed the site editor and was told it was surely a coincidence, so I went postal on the reviewer and basically started Googling any prose of his that seemed "good" and found he'd been lifting from all over. Once confronted with this, the other site's editor acknowledged that her writer was a thief and took all of his content down and got him to apologize to me. (Ironically, my own editor had advised against me pursuing this at all, which was pretty fucking milquetoast.)

Anyway, if you think something has been lifted, just copy 10 or so words from it and throw it in the Google machine. Unless it's behind a paywall, anything stolen should show up.

10 words or so? um - that's gonna give you about 50 billion results unless you gots a habit of talking like me - and even I doesn't do it in a story. Unique writing styles is not gonna showed up in 10 words. Can probly read through results to find the ones what is real plagiarism, but would probly be easier to just pick key phrases or sections of text what isn't bog standard 'get to the next point' poop. Let the searh engine do the search - give it stuff it can work with and sift out the fluff that everyone puts in their stories sos it only says the stuff that is story-relevant

Fine -- put 'em in quotes in the search engine, in which case your results should show only direct lifts.

It will if you put those 10 words in quotes, telling Google to search for exactly those words, in exactly that order. That reduces the number of hits down to more or less your work, and any jackass who has copied it.

Naturally, you'll want to hunt for a reasonably unique turn of phrase. With ten words, even a tired saying can have enough additional context to work, though.

You want to use something near the beginning of your work, and preferably something that doesn't contain character or location names. "Crafty" thieves will often change the names.

Nope, not trying to argue needlessly. Was thinking peoples would like more practical ideas than the 10 words thing. If it works for you, go for it. Is just more effort that way than taking a bigger piece and let the search engine do the work for you.

Searching on bigger chunks is more likely to be defeated by minor tweaks to the work (like changing character names). A well-chosen ten-word phrase is usually more than enough to be unique.

What I find mind blowing is how few of these thieves even bother to change names. Even the ones caught lifting stories here for the paid market are copy pasting as is.

Always surprises me too that they take popular and fairly new stories rather than going back to ones that have been here since the early 2000's with no activity from the author in years. Those would be a lot easier to not get caught with.

True - although is hard to find a good unique phrase that short in most stories here. Some authors here is really really good at turns of phrase what is unusual and interesting, but most (including myself) don't tend to has too much unique phrases - we rely on the story itself, and that involves lots of stuff what has been said before by nother peoples in nother stories sos takes a few lines to not get thousands of matches.

I could be wrong, but is a thing I has worked on professionally (as a software engineer, not a writer) and search phrases in stories is HARD to not get thousands of matches for even the weirdest set of words, and ten is just not enough most of the time.
 
I just have to search for 'copyright oggbashan'.

Most of those who steal my stories leave my copyright notice. :rolleyes:
 
I've never had the slightest trouble finding a single sentence or part of a sentence within the first two paragraphs of any of mine that didn't turn up only my story or copies of it.

Rarely do I even have to try a second one when I discover my phrasing wasn't as unique as I thought. Never had to go beyond a second.

Tried it with several random stories from the hubs of various ages, scores, and categories, using 10 word, no-names phrases, and got the same results on all of them. Stories with scores below 3. In lightly-read categories. One hit wonders. None of it mattered. It turned up the story on Lit, sometimes on other erotica sites, and sometimes as filler text on some hack pr0n site that's probably full of malware.

Tried a few less than a week old, and most of those delivered no hits at all for the exact phrase. Those that did delivered the same results.

If you're delivering anything resembling originality, a 10 word exact phrase search is perfectly sufficient.

Thank you for testing. My experience is not with Lit type stuff sos might not be applicable and testing like yours is good :).

I can't even get my own stories, posted here on Lit, to show up using a text search. Even older ones.

When you say 'factoid', do you mean a 'commonly held belief that is not actually true', as coined by Norman Mailer in 1973, or its evolved meaning, 'a trivial piece of information that is actually true'?

It's possible, because I've been doing searches of this nature for years, for various reasons, that my personal Google profile is influencing the results. I suppose I should try it from an incognito session and see what the results are.

EDIT: Nope, tried all the searches in incognito mode with the same results. Just for giggles, checked in a browser I'm pretty sure I've never Google searched with before, and got the same results as well. It's a browser I rarely use except to check browser compatibility.

You have to enclose the quote in quotation marks. That's what signals to Google to search for only those words in exactly that order.

Without the quote marks, it's searching for all of those words with no context.

Some day I will learn to use the tools I develop :D
