Beta reading requested (Story text included in thread)

Edit: never mind, apparently I'm not allowed to attach the text

I always edit my stories with a global mindset, so if I find problems when editing later chapters, I might have to go back to this chapter and tweak things. But standing on its own, this chapter is probably close to final form.

So I'm posting it here for now, as it's waiting for the rest of the chapters to be finalized before I submit them together to Lit.

It's some sort of urban fantasy. I haven't made a tag list for the first chapter yet.

Any feedback you want to give is fine. I'm mostly working on final editing/tweaking at the moment, trying to nail down the exact tone to make it read the way I want it to.
