Has anybody else had this problem? I am willing to help anyone but I really can't fix something that is at best broken English.

It's up to you, isn't it? Whatever you think you can commit to or not commit to. I agree it's a lot of work, but some people are willing to do it and some aren't. It's easy enough to politely back out of a job -- either with an excuse or with the truth told gently -- if it's too much.

We all have real lives to handle as well as lending a hand by editing.

All of us at one time or another.

Most of us expect our authors to take notice of our comments and learn as they go along. However, very few of us are prepared to start teaching people who claim to be 18+ and yet need basic grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc as if they never got beyond 7 years old.
