Hiding
greenmountaineer

We hide death behind sanitized walls
of nursing homes and hospital wards
while supper grows cold on a plastic tray
after they wheel the body away.

We fill our days in the marketplace
where nameplates wear an anonymous face
before we go to there’s no place like home
but a house that feels like a catacomb.

But hooray, today is Valentine’s Day;
buy something special; say Dom Perignon
so you can sit down with ice and the wife
on ice, pop the cork, and drink alone.

I’d like to think that someday she may
playfully scratch whiskers on your face,
and love, once lost, is found once more
when time has erased the memory of flaws,

you happy at home with your used Chevrolet
and every day is Valentine’s Day
with girdles and frequent bathroom breaks,
all settled in for your settlement dates.

In loving memory of my mother, girdled, and my father wearing white whiskers

Anything but
HarryHill

Posies and yankee dimes,
I loves you Valentines,
dark chocolate and deep red wine,
supper for two, candle light.

Calcium
Tzara

She wants champagne and yellow roses.
But me? I'd really like some skin
In dim-lit rooms. This juxtaposes
Acquisitiveness with the sin

Of adult coupling, sex ·u ·ál · ly,
That I want intellect ·u ·ál · ly
To bind her to me, Crazy Glued—
Though she's not feeling in the mood.

And so I try to back off, soften
My fond approach, and make it staid.
But still, I want to get her laid,
And Valentine's a day that often

My girl ends up with candy. I,
Though eager, end just ossified.

Rhymes with Love
Piscator

It's hard to find rhyme words for love
though I look to the grey skies above
in vain searching for raven or dove
the hawk remains still at my glove.

Yet together for better or worse
we'll get by if we switch to free verse.

one more
HarryHill

(First line T.S. Eliot)

February is the cruelest month,
would be lovers have no other,
to share, to dream, to touch,
to say on a holiday,
you hold my heart, let's screw.

That fickle date,
one day in 28 or so,
turns the month,
hard, grey, cold.

And those of us,
lucky enough, graced with a squeeze,
pay the piper, and the florist,
and the Matre'D,
no Midas dare hold their gold,
or the Queen may have her say.

So fill a mouth with lovely thoughts,
search for the one you love,
open your purse you cheap bastard,
visit the local bar,
and remember,
it's only one day.

Your Love Ran Out
UnderYourSpell

The more I think about all of it,
your love ran out intertwined with my muse.
You'd think it'd be easy all of this shit,
the more I think about all of it.
This line goes here, followed by this bit,
now get this right and I can't lose.
(but) the more I think about all of it,
your love ran out intertwined with my muse.

1a - (edited after taking UYS’s comments to ❤️ (pardon the Valentine pun)

each of you have done to the other,
and Valentine’s Day is just another
girdle and frequent bathroom break
for no longer pity but heaven’s sake.

Late addition

Coffeebreak Musings
Mrtenant

I love the way you move me
With no effort, by your heart alone
How, oh how, can I be worthy?
And yet, daily, our love has grown

My heart pours forth like a river
Overflowing its banks from a storm
Your warm touch makes me shiver
No rhyme, no reason, without form

I'll treasure all these heady times
Blessing us and filling our hearts
Graced here with prose and rhymes
Immortalized with bright Cupid darts
